#1: TELL YOUR STORY

• Stick to the basics

• Don’t inflate your story to “superhero” status.

• Keep it real.

• Don’t make anything up (skills, talents, certifications).

• It could come back to bite you later!

• Don’t exaggerate anything beyond the scope of what you can back up.

#2: USE YOUR MOST CRUCIAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES

• Only list on your resume those experiences that impacted you in some way or another.

• Learned a new skill on-site?

• Overcame an obstacle?

• Reached a near-impossible challenge or milestone?

• Hit your numbers?

• Developed new team-building skills?

• Earned new certifications?

• Use experiences you can back-up with meaningful stories or examples.

• Imagine a “play-by-play” in football. This is how you want to break down the most memorable ocassions from each of the programs/activations listed on your resume.

#3: BE HUMBLE

• Remember, lots of people are competing for the gig you applied to.

• Be humble in knowing that everyone has bills to pay, goals to reach, circumstances that they need to attain or cover just like you do.

• Be happy for others when they get the gig; even go out of your way and congratulate them.

• Assure companies, when you are interviewing, that you would love to work for them, but want to make sure that you would be contributing if they bring you own board (essentially telling them what they already know, and re-assuring them that hiring you only if you’re the right fit for the company/brand).

• You win some, you lose some. This is the case for everyone. No one wins 100% of the gigs they apply for.

#4: MAKE IT A WIN-WIN

• Remember, it doesn’t make sense for a company to hire you if it’s not going to be a win-win.

• It’s not always about “you”.

• When a company is interviewing you, you should be thinking about how you will be much more valuable that what they would be paying you.

• Find ways to give back more to the company than they would have ever expected:• Provide vehicle parking to save company money• Provide offsite storage (garage, lot, venue, your home/apt, etc)• Staffing for company to save them time.• Reduce venue/sponsorship costs for company via relationships you have or are building currently.

• Win-win scenarios• Saving the company money• Saving the company time• Saving them hassles/obstacles• Making connections that are valuable between brand client/agency and persons of interest.

#5: BE PATIENT

• When it comes to payment terms, stay away from immediately negotiating or even asking when the first paycheck will be deposited (especially this!)

• Don’t send multiple emails or leave multiple voicemails, hoping that you got the gig!

• So much productivity is lost by sitting near your phone or computer, constantly refreshing the screen, hoping you get an offer! Don’t be this person.

• Instead, focus your down-time, or “wait time” on other tasks, like meditating, reading, writing/journaling, exercising, sports, family, etc.

• Being patient also has benefits for the client’s perspective of how you function and work. It will pay off huge dividends in the long run.

• If you message the client too much, or leave many voicemails, it’s a good way to not be considered for the gig you applied for OR ever again!
