How to Answer the Tell Me About Yourself Interview Question

Although it might be tempting to share a list of your most compelling qualifications for the job at hand, a more low-key approach will probably help you to develop a personal rapport with your interviewer.

Try starting out by sharing some personal interests which don't relate directly to your work. Examples might include a hobby which you are passionate about like quilting, astronomy, chess, choral singing, golf, skiing, tennis, or antiquing.

Interests like long distance running or yoga which help to represent your healthy, energetic side are worth mentioning.

Be ready to share three or four of the personal qualities, skills and/or areas of expertise which would help you to excel in the job for which you are interviewing.

Ultimately, you will want to share several other strengths before the interview is over.

Make a list of your strengths before you go into the interview, so you know what you will share. Look at the job description and match it with your skills. Then share the top few skills which make you an ideal candidate for the job.

However, be careful not to overwhelm the interviewer with too much information. After mentioning three or four strengths, you might mention that you have several other assets which you would like to discuss as the interview unfolds.

At first, you should only mention the asset and allude only briefly to some proof of how you have tapped it to your advantage. For example, you might say that you love to give presentations and that has helped you to generate lots of leads at sales dinners for prospective clients.

Later in the interview, you will want to be more specific and detailed in discussing situations, interventions and results flowing from your strengths.

Avoid Politics and Controversy

Typically, you would steer clear of controversial topics like politics or religion. It's important to avoid any references to topics that would cause concern about your ethics, character, productivity, or work ethic. You also don't need to share personal information about your family. There is no need to discuss spouses, partners, children, or any other strictly personal information.

With the question "Who was your best boss and who was the worst?" the interviewer is trying to discover if you assess blame or carry a grudge. The interviewer also wants to determine if you are match for the leadership style of the company.

Even if you had a boss who was awful, don't say so. Interviewers don't want to hear too much negativity and they will wonder what you will say about their organization if you were hired and it didn't work out.

As my resume reflects, I received two promotions and then a recruiter contacted for the position at the XYZ Company. I've been there for the past 4 years and have learned a great deal, while making significant contributions to my department.

Also, explain the thinking process that went into make each of those decisions. For my first job, I was happy to know I would be working in a job that utilized my

education. It was exciting to know that within just a few weeks of graduation, I had my first paycheck.

My thinking behind the XYZ position centered on the fact that they have a global presence, it was a definite promotion and positioned me to be a viable candidate for the marketing position with your company.

How many hours a day/week do you need to work to get the job done? I use my time efficiently at work and, for the most part, it's not the number of hours I work; but how effective my time has been to accomplish the job.

I'm sure my references will tell you I was more than willing to put in the time to be sure the job was completed as quickly and as professionally as possible.

If you stayed with your current company, what would be your next move? The upward mobility at my current company would most likely be in the global marketing department.

How do you measure success? I measure professional success by the standards of the company for which I work, the feedback I receive from my peers, supervisors and subordinates. Personally, it is to know I'm regarded as a good husband, father and member of society.

Describe your dream job. As a child, I dreamed of being the starting pitcher for the Chicago Cubs.

When I realized I did not have a fast ball, or a change -up; I concentrated on my skills in marketing because I realized it is an area where I not only can make significant contributions, but I enjoy using my talent in a corporate environment.

During an interview, an employer may ask about your work style to decide whether you will fit in well with the company culture and the particular job. This question also reveals to the employer whether or not you are self-aware enough to recognize and clearly communicate your work style. While this question might seem vague, it is a useful open-ended question that allows you to put yourself in the most positive light.

How to Answer When answering this question, it is important to keep the particular job in mind.

Think carefully about the job before answering this question. Most jobs require at least some collaboration, so even if you prefer working alone, emphasize that you value others’ input.

Taking direction – Another important element of your work style is how you like to communicate with your boss. Do you prefer to take constant direction, or do you like to be given a task and left alone to complete it? Thinking about your ideal relationship with your employer will help both you and the interviewer decide if you are a good fit for the job.

Your communication style – If this job requires constant communication, you might want to emphasize how you communicate with employers, staff, and clients throughout the workday.

Be Brief

You obviously cannot mention all of these elements of work style in your answer. Focus on a couple elements that you think demonstrate your best qualities and that fit with the job at hand.

If you have a little extra time, consider including a brief example or two that emphasize your work style. For example, mention a time when your efficiency and ability to multitask helped you complete an assignment a week in advance.

Sample Answers

My work style is extremely flexible – working on so many different projects requires me to be adaptive. In general, I try to work on one project at a time, working as quickly but efficiently as possible to achieve the highest results. All of my projects require collaboration, so I use the team environment to check for errors. I am a perfectionist and a driven worker, and I think my clear communication skills allow me to bring out the best in any team, in any project.

I am extremely dependable. I have rarely missed a day of work, and am known for coming in early and staying late to finish important tasks and achieve results. This dependability extends to my collaborative work as well. I always meet deadlines, and help my teammates to meet theirs as well. For example, on my last project, a teammate was struggling to complete his assignment for the team, and I stayed late every day that week to help him not only complete his assignment, but exceed our initial estimations for the project.

I'm always on top of my projects. Due to my organizational skills and efficiency, I am able to juggle multiple projects at once with success. While I complete most of my

When the interviewer asks "Do you prefer to work independently or on a team?" he or she wants to know if you're a team player or would rather work on your own.

Best Answers I am equally comfortable working as a member of a team and independently. In

researching the LMN company, your mission statement and the job description, I could see similarities to my previous position where there were some assignments that required a great deal of independent work and research and others where the team effort was most effective.

As I said, I'm comfortable with both. In high school, I enjoyed playing soccer and performing with the marching band.

Each required a different kind of team play, but the overall goal of learning to be a member of a group was invaluable. I continued to grow as team member while on my sorority's debate team and through my advanced marketing class where we had numerous team assignments. I'm very comfortably working on a team, but I can also work independently, as well.

A typical interview question to discover how well you would work with other people is "Give some examples of teamwork." Employers want to hire people who are team players, so respond in a way that will show the hiring manager that you're able to work well with others.

Sample Answers In my last position, I was part of a software implementation team. We all worked

together to plan and manage the implementation schedule, to provide customer training, and ensure a smooth transition for our customers.

Our team always completed our projects ahead of schedule with very positive reviews from our clients.

I was part of team responsible for evaluating and selecting a new vendor for our office equipment and supplies. The inter-departmental team reviewed options, compared pricing and service, chose a vendor, and implemented the transition to the new vendor.

Hear are ample answers to the interview question "Have you ever had difficulty working with a manager?" Tailor your response to fit your personal circumstances.

I have been very lucky to have had terrific managers during my career so far. I have respected each of them, and got along well with all of them.

No, I am a hard worker, and my managers always seem to appreciate the job I'm doing. I've got along well with every manager I've had.

I had a rocky start with a manager earlier in my career, because we had different expectations for the flow of the workday. Once we talked about it, we realized that our goals were very compatible, and we were able to work very successfully together for several years.

I have found that if I take the time to talk with my manager at the beginning of a project, we can all get off to a great start on the same page.

How to Answer

This question is similar to the interview question, “What makes you angry?” For both questions, your answer should contain two components.

First, describe the particular situation that frustrated you, and then explain how you handled that situation.

When describing the situation, avoid heated words like “hate” or even “angry.” Instead, use less intense words to describe your anger, like “frustrated” or “disappointed.” This will emphasize that you are not one to lose control in a difficult scenario.

Also try to select a situation that does not involve a previous boss or manager, as this will make you appear to be an easily disgruntled employee. Similarly, while it is fine to mention being frustrated by someone’s unprofessional behavior or a difficult situation, do not spend too much time blaming or attacking someone else in your answer.

Briefly mention the behavior or event that bothered you, and then move on to the solution.

Conclude your answer by explaining how you handled the situation. Make sure you emphasize how you solved the issue in a calm, professional manner. For example, if you were frustrated by an employee’s behavior, explain how you met with him or her and provided constructive feedback that led to a positive change in their actions.

Another option for answering this question is to say that you typically do not get angry at work – this will demonstrate that you do not lose control at work, and that you realize that kind of behavior is inappropriate. However, after explaining this, you should still describe a time when you were frustrated or disappointed by something at work, and how you handled it. To deny that you ever become frustrated would make you appear insincere to the interviewer.

I try to look at every situation from an analytical perspective, and not let my emotions dictate my actions. I have had employees in the past whose professionalism has been

questionable, and who have not met the requirements of the job. In those situations, I have found that the best policy is to be honest about the issues in question, and offer clear strategies for improvement.

I don’t think anger is an appropriate workplace emotion. I have dealt with situations that I found frustrating; for example, I had a coworker who was very confrontational in her written and oral communication. I felt like I was constantly being criticized for things beyond my control. I sat down with her and talked about ways that we could improve our communication. After having that calm, productive conversation, our relationship as coworkers improved greatly, and we actually became collaborators on a number of successful projects.

Anger to me means loss of control. I do not lose control. When I get stressed, I step back, take a deep breath, thoughtfully think through the situation and then begin to formulate a plan of action. For instance, when I am given multiple projects to complete in a short amount of time, rather than feeling frustrated, I come up with a strategy for how to complete the work in a steady, methodical manner that will not overwhelm me.

How to Answer Interview Questions About Stress

The best way to answer this question is to give an example of how you have handled stress in a previous job.

That way, the interviewer can get a clear picture of how well you work in stressful situations.

Avoid mentioning a situation when you put yourself in a needlessly stressful situation. For example, do not share a story about a time when you were stressed because you procrastinated and had to finish a project quickly. Focus on a time that you were given a difficult task or a multiple assignments, and you rose to the occasion.

You also should not focus too much on how stressed out you felt. While you should certainly admit that stress happens, emphasize on how you deal with the stress, rather than how it bothered you.

Examples of the Best Answers

Pressure is very important to me. Good pressure, such as having a lot of assignments to work on, or an upcoming deadline, helps me to stay motivated and productive. Of course, there are times when too much pressure can lead to stress; however, I am very skilled at balancing multiple projects and meeting deadlines, which prevents me from feeling stressed often. For example, I once had three large projects due in the same week, which was a lot of pressure. However, because I created a schedule that detailed how I would break down each project into small assignments, I completed all three projects ahead of time, and avoided unnecessary stress.

I react to situations, rather than to stress. That way, the situation is handled and doesn't become stressful. For example, when I deal with an unsatisfied customer, rather than feeling stressed, I focus on the task at hand. I believe my ability to communicate effectively with customers during these moments helps reduce my own

When you're asked to describe the pace at which you work, be careful how you respond. This is a question where faster isn't necessarily better. Most employers would rather hire employees who work at a steady pace and produce quality results. Someone who is too slow to get the job done in a reasonable time frame isn't going to be a good hire. Neither is a

candidate who works frenetically all day because they might make more errors, or more easily burn out.

Emphasize Steadiness and Quality

One way to answer this question is to say that you work at a steady pace but usually complete work in advance of the deadline. You also want to emphasize that you achieve quality results at your pace. Provide a specific example of a time when working at this pace helped you achieve results.

Discuss your ability to manage projects and get them done on, or ahead, of schedule. If you work at a job where you have set criteria (i.e. number of calls made or responded to) that measures accomplishments, discuss how you have achieved or exceeded those goals.

Sample Answers

I usually work at a steady, consistent pace. Because of my ability to organize and plan out my work schedule, I always complete my work ahead of time. For example, when I was assigned a large project due in six months, I broke the project into large goals and small, day-to-day goals. I created a schedule, and steadily checked off each of these goals while still successfully completing my other duties. I ultimately finished the project a week ahead of schedule.

I consider myself a diligent worker who avoids procrastination. At my previous sales job, we had to make at least 30 calls every shift, on top of our other administrative responsibilities. While some people saved all their calls for the end of their shift, which sometimes led to people missing their quota, I divided my time between making calls and doing my other duties. I am not easily distracted, but can balance working steadily on multiple tasks. This allows me to complete all of my work on time and produce quality results. I won best salesperson three times at my previous company.

The question "If you know your boss is 100% wrong about something, how would you handle this?" is asked to find out how you deal with a difficult situation.

Best Answers An answer that works well is: "It depends on the situation and the personality of the

supervisor." To elaborate, give examples: My present supervisor does not like to have his authority questioned. He's fairly new

on the job and almost all of the people he supervises have been on the job longer than he has.

He's never bothered to learn the procedures, how things are done or how the computer system works. But if any of us tell him that how he wants something done won't work, he gets extremely angry. So, I never tell him he's wrong. Never. Whatever he tells me to do, I smile and say "okay." Then if I know a way to get it done that will work, I do it that way, give him the results he wants and never tell him I didn't do it the way he told me to. He got the results and is happy. I saved myself the stress of being yelled at and gave him what he wanted, so I'm happy.

My prior supervisor was more easy-going and if I told her "You know, I think it might work better if I do what you asked in such and such a way," she would say "Okay, try it."

If I were a new hire on a job, I would probably not question a supervisor because I might think I didn't know enough. Except on the new job I'm going to. Answers to Avoid

This is not the time to be humble. While you do not want to exaggerate your strengths, you should be comfortable articulating what makes you an ideal candidate. Creating a list of your strengths (as they relate to the job) will help you answer this question with confidence.

On the other hand, you do not want to answer this question with a laundry list of vague strengths. Stay focused on a couple key strengths that relate directly to the position and the
