committed to producing and marketing the best products and support services available. We believeit is essential not only to provide products of the highest quality, but to treat every customerwith attention, consideration and respect. By listening closely to our customers, we constantly

improve our products and services ("Nintendo corporate information," 2010).

Research Question:When listening closely to our customers, did Nintendo effectively make the Nintendo

entertainment gaming system of the highest quality or did their mass production of the systemcause a flaw in the design? Did Nintendo ever seek to improve our (their) product?

Method:To begin my research I consulted Nintendos mission statement. I then raised my research question,When listening closely to our customers, did Nintendo effectively make the Nintendoentertainment gaming system of the highest quality or did their mass production of the systemcause a flaw in the design? understand a consumers impression of Nintendo I searched out a person who grew up along with theNintendo Corporation. On September 26, 2010 at 2:00am, I conducted an interview with JessicaDitty, an alumni of Ball State University. Born in June of 1984, Ditty was one of the firstgenerations to interact with the first of Nintendos product lines. The NES (Nintendo

Entertainment System) was introduced into consumer populations by 1985 and began circulatingthrough the United States by 1987.

To prepare the interview, I concocted three questions (located in the appendix.) The questionswere designed to be open ended and to question Nintendos mission statement without quotingstraight from it. The document following examines the results and conclusions of my interview.

    Introduction:

What is the NES?The NES is the first gaming systemmassproduced by the Nintendocorporation. The system is noted for isrevitalizing of the American gamingmarket in 1985 with its 8 bit graphics.Since its release the system hasundergone few changes. Questioning of Nintendo Quality

    Products of the Highest

    Quality?

Nintendos mission statement stated thatit is essential that they provideproducts of the highest quality. However, only months after the release ofthe first NES, the product proved faulty.

During our interview, Ditty noted thatAs far as user being user friendly Assoon as you got the games to work, I feellike its pretty much plug and play. This seems to be a common problem thatNintendo never suitably solved, beyondproducing different gaming systems suchas the Game Boy. I masculine named devicethat didnt solve the problem of the NES.

    Nintendos Customer Relations

Does Nintendo listen to the consumer?

At the end of their mission statement, Nintendo, says, but to treat every customer with attention, considerationand respect. By listening closely to our customers, weconstantly improve our products and services. Accordingto Ditty, You take the cartridge and you enter it in theslot and sometimes the game doesnt work quite right soyou gotta do that a couple times kind of you know.. get it

to work right and added, I find it fairly wasy to use assoon as you get the game to actually work.

In the interview this idea was expressed a multitude oftimes. I also relate to this idea. In order to adhere totheir mission statement, Nintendo, releases the Game Boy.One is left to wonder did Nintendo really listen to theircustomers?

    Research Conclusion

My Answer:Sorry, Nintendo. Your consumer is onanother consul.

My studies find that although there is afeeling of nostalgia while playing theNES, it is too much work getting thegames to play. There is no doubt thatsome NES players own Wii, but there isstill the unheard population thatremember the cartridge issues of the NES.Nintendo is lucky Compact discs wereinvented because their primary level ofgame cartridge making it so the gamedoesnt work quite right.

    Appendix

Question Number OneMe: What kind of interaction have you had with the NES? Was it easy to use?

Jessica Ditty: Well, I have used the NES for gaming purposes for many years now. I find it fairlyeasy to use. You take the cartridge out and you enter it in the slot and sometimes the gamedoesnt quite work right so you gotta do that a couple times king you know get it to work rightand I find it fairly east to use as soon as you get the game to actually work. Umm Thecontrollers are fairly simple. You got your A button and your B button and your direction pad;up, down, left, right. Your start and select menu. So yeah, I would say that the NES is Fairly

Simple, At least by todays standards.Me: Good answer.

    Question Number Two

Me: Is the NES really a timeless gaming system or do you think that it is a way That it is waytoo out of date?

Jessica Ditty: Well, I do think the NES is rather timeless. Some of the games you really cantfind them anywhere else, especially like original Mario Brothers. Everybody knows original Mario

Brothers you cant replace that, even though the new Mario Brothers for Wii is ratherentertaining. I just feel like the nostalgic views and the nostalgia of playing the NES issomething that will be around a long time. So I dont thin it is too out of date. For childrenthese days it might be because its not as interactive, but I think especially for our generationit is going to be something that sticks at least in our memories, if not for you know futuregames you know flashback games and stuff.

    Me; Alirght.

    Question Number 3

Me; what do you think about the NES? Is it user friendly? Is the user interface of the gamesgenerally the same or are they technically difficult?

Jessica Ditty: Well, in general, when I think about the NES, I, think it is a good gaming system.Uh.. As far as being user friendly. As soon as you get the games to finally work I fell like, itspretty much plug and play its not really anything you have to really worry about. The thing thatreally I dislike about it, you cant really save games on it so once you get to certain level youhave to start all over. So that is one thing that I dont like about it. Um As far as theinterface of the games theyre all emm kinda similar. Your basic 2D games that you go left, yougo right, you jump up, you go down. * Giggle * You defeat the enemy, you go to the next level, eventually youve beaten the game and it says, Congratulations. But as far as difficulty of thevideo games, for their time, I would say some of them are rather difficult umm but in todaysstandards Id say that their all generally pretty easy I meant, there are still ones I cant beat.So I cant really say that theyre all super easy.

Me: Alright, well Im a have to stop you there, time is up and I would just like to thank you forthe interview.
