Framed: Step Into Art On view through February 1, 2015

Durham Children’s Museum

Made possible by RBC Wealth Management

DON’T MISS THIS EXHIBITION! | Indulge in art like never before in Framed: Step Into Art™, a traveling exhibition created by the Minnesota Children’s Museum. This bilingual exhibition transports visitors through a giant picture frame into a world where paintings by well-known artists leap off the canvas and invite children inside the art experience. As visitors play and move through the exhibition, they are challenged to set up camp in the Canadian Rockies at John Singer Sargent’s Camp at Lake O’Hara, travel south of the border through Diego Rivera’s Corn Festival, set a table and cook a meal in Grant Wood’s Dinner for Threshers and ride a giant chicken in Clementine Hunter’s Big Chicken. Designed for children ages 5–12 and their families, guests will spend time with paintings from iconic to contemporary—and learn to appreciate their own, as well as others’ opinions of individual art.

Framed: Step Into Art™ was created by the Minnesota Children’s Museum.

Meet the new Director of the Blakemore PlanetariumI was born and raised in Columbus, Georgia as the middle child of a newspaper art

director/fine artist, my father and a church secretary/ country music writer, my mother.

I’ve been around art my whole life, and I’ve always had a strong passion for it. When I

was a toddler, my parents were putting crayons in my hands and giving me huge pieces of paper to draw on. When I was 15,

I discovered my love of science, and was hired by the Coca-Cola Space Science Center in Columbus, Georgia where for the

next 11 years I operated the planetarium, taught astronomy to the general public as well as to students in a formal classroom

setting, and ran mobile astronomy and other educational outreach programs. Over the years, I decided to try to combine my

two passions, art and science, and it ultimately led me to attend The Savannah College of Art and Design(SCAD) to pursue

3D animation and visual effects. It was the perfect combination of art and science. I continued working at the CCSSC through

and after college, and ultimately that’s where I met my wife, Cheryl. She is a geologist who studies Martian super volcanoes,

but is currently using her talents and knowledge to work in the oil industry here in Midland. In September of 2014, we moved

from Columbus to Midland for Cheryl’s career. I was fortunate enough

to be brought on as the Director of the Blakemore Planetarium about

a month after that. Getting to know the staff and our patrons here

at the MSW has been one of the most fun things since I started.

Cheryl and I are both extremely grateful for the kindness and support

that has been shown by everyone. Our members can expect a lot

of changes over the coming months and years, and I’m very excited

about it. We are working on new outreach programs, educational

programs, exhibitions, shows, and schedules. I’m extremely excited

to be here, and I can’t wait to see what’s just around the bend for the

Blakemore Planetarium. It’s a blank canvas, we have our ideas, and

now it’s time to start painting!
