Internships for the IDRC Safe and Inclusive cities project This project uses spatial justice as a pivotal concept for analyzing the emerging situations and forms of violence, poverty and inequality in the cities in developing countries (India, Brazil and South Africa) It perceives the current alliance !et"een State and mar#et as a #ey driver for socio$spatial transformations in these cities, changing the value orientations of spatial practices and producing several injustices, inequalities, insecurities and violence %o" ever, gr oups of ur !an poor or ot her soci al ly e&cl ude d and marginal ized ur !an popu lations are active ly enga ged in nego tiating, th"art ing and often su!verti ng thes e sit uati ons thr ough multi ple net" or#s and str ateg ies that range from the for mal to the informal These struggles and e&periences are seen as critical to the clai ms of poor groups to the city, "ith peace and violence employed as vehicles !y !oth the State ' mar#et alliance and the local groups This proposal therefore "ill focus strongly on people, places and infrastructure as a "ay of analyzing the comple&ity of factors leading to violence in cities as  "ell as d"elling on the "ays in "hich strategies are developed to cou nter such episodic and endemi c forms of viole nce The projec t locates itself at the cusp of these contestat ions and see#s to identify lessons that these contestati ons offer for promoti on of peace, securi ty and enrichment of livelihoods As a part of this project internships are !eing offered !y the School of %a!itat olicy and ractise at TISS These internships "ill !e open to *A students from various social science disciplines and final year architectural students The candidates "ill need to possess familiarity "ith *um!ai and its region +ach intern "ill !e allotted a specific case study that "ould !e situated in the *um!ai region in "hich they "ill !e e&pected to carry out some preliminary field "or# They  "ill also need to have the a!ility to carry out independent research and produce a "ritten document at the end of the internship The candidate "ill also have to have su!stantial analytical s#ills and "ould need to produce some visual documentation of the cases "ith some form of mapping element in them The internship "ill !e for duration lasting from  "ee#s to - "ee#s in the month of April and *ay All interns "ill !e offered a !asic remuneration for the duration . Research and Documentation Intern $ /ocumentation for the S0A case studies 1l oo#i ng at the changi ng scal es of re develo pment in the ci ty2 The pr imar y respons i!ili ties of this intern "ould !e resear ch and documen tation on the sites that have "itnessed redevelopment in the last fe" decades This internship "ould require some famili ari ty "i th *um!ai and fluency in *ar athi 1"r iti ng and read ing2 Thi s per son "ould als o requir e car ryi ng out some field "or# on related issues Thi s internship is e&pected to last for duration of a!out - "ee#s 3 Mapping Intern $ This person "ill !e "or#ing "ith the mapping element and the visualisation of date in the city profile This person can also find innovative "ays for us to represent the other data sets that "e have seen as part of the city profile 4luenc y "ith design soft"are and mapping soft"are is a must This person can also help us "ith producing the !anners and other visuals for the event and the city profile dissemination "or#shop This persons5 engagement "ith us can !e for a period of a!out 6 "ee#s
