What  do  you  want  to  do?  •  Not  always  an  easy  quesDon  to  answer  •  IdenDfy  passions  à  What  gets  you  excited?  What  are  the  acDviDes  that  you  do  where  Dme  seems  to  fly  by?  

•  Discover  derivaDves  of  that  passion    Ac/on  #1  –  Spend  30  minutes  wri/ng  down  your  passions.  Then  spend  10-­‐15  min  each  day  researching  careers  that  align  with  your  passion.  Con/nue  this  un/l  you  gone  through  your  en/re  list.  Rank  them.  

Who  is  doing  it  now?  

•  Find  individuals  that  are  where  you  want  to  be  – Friends,  Family,  Blogs,  TwiMer,  Instagram,  etc.  

•  Individuals  that  are  at  the  top  of  their  game  •  Why  have  they  been  successful?    Ac/on  #2  –  For  the  top  five  careers  you  found,  iden/fy  two  individuals  that  you  can  connect  with.  Then  do  it,  reach  out  to  them.  

What  are  the  key  skills?  

•  What  are  the  most  important  skills  you  need  to  have  to  be  best  in-­‐class  at  a  parDcular  job?  

•  How  can  you  build  those  skills?  Ac/on  #3  –  For  the  top  two  careers  write  down  the  three  most  important  skills.  Then  devise  a  plan  to  build  those  skills.

•  Now,  you  are  in  posiDon  to  have  substanDve  conversaDons  with  others  about  internship  and  employment  opportuniDes  à  what,  why  &  how  

Ac/on  #4  –  If  you’re  in  school,  use  the  career  center,  aOend  guest  lectures,  join  clubs,  ask  for  business  cards  when  you  meet  people  of  interest  and  then  follow-­‐up  by  email  within  by  24-­‐48  hrs;  If  you’re  out  of  school  join  professional  organiza/ons,  aOend  speaker  series  at  local  universi/es  

Exceed  ExpectaDons  

•  The  goal  is  to  get  a  full-­‐Dme  offer.  •  Perform  at  the  highest  level,  even  if  you  discover  that  you  don’t  like  the  job.  

Ac/on  #5  –  Ask  your  manager  what  his/her  expecta/ons  are  of  you  during  the  summer.  Set  your  own  goals  and  share  them  with  your  manager.  Be  inquisi/ve.  Get  to  know  others  in  the  office      

Key  Take-­‐Aways  •  You  have  to  know  what  you  want  and  be  able  to  skillfully  arDculate  that  to  others.    

•  You  need  to  know  where  you  are  and  where  you  need  to  be  to  excel.

•  You  must  strive  to  perform  above  and  beyond  expecta/ons.
