Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking summer interns with a background in accounting, finance, or general business. The internship will consist of one or more rotational assignments within PNNL’s Business Systems Directorate (BSD), including BSD’s Financial Operations department, Business Development & Analysis department, Contracts department and/or Business Offices.  Successful candidates will assist staff in a variety of areas, including:

Finance/Accounting Rotation – under supervision of a Finance Manager or designee:- Cash and/or general ledger reconciliations and problem analysis/resolution - Varied functions including troubleshooting one-of-a-kind problems, administration, research, and financial or data analysis - Assistance in tracking costs, budgets, and program funds by reviewing key data sources and interacting with staff on a regular basis - Development, coordination and presentation of financial forecasts and budgets- Supporting day-to-day operations in accounting and budgeting - Proposal pricing- Preparation of financial reports for internal and external customers- Identifying process improvements that enable more effective and efficient business operations

Contracts Rotation – under supervision of a Contracts Manager or designee:- Responsible for planning, preparation, submission and execution of non-complex contracts for commercial off-the-shelf commodities and services- Developing a working knowledge of Battelle/PNNL and DOE policies and procedures with respect to government procurement regulations

- Conducting market research for potential sources of supply or services, conducting contract negotiations normally valued at less than $25K.  Drafting simple contractual instruments in accordance with prescribed templates and guidelines- Determining reasonableness of price for goods and services procured through the use of techniques such as price competition and published list prices- Monitoring expenditures, deliverables, and completion dates of contracts- Supporting day-to-day operations in contracts- Preparing documents for file close-out- Identifying process improvements that enable more effective and efficient business operations .Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be degree-seeking students enrolled at an accredited college or university.  Candidates must be taking at least 6 credit hours and have an overall GPA of 2.5..Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with Junior or above standing who have achieved an intermediate level of coursework, experience, or combination of the two.

Proficiency computer skills with competency in spreadsheet and database programs, preferably Excel and Access, as well as Word and PowerPoint. 

Good oral and written communication skills

Proactive and outgoing attitude 

Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred
