January 10, 2012 Dear Prospective Intern, The Woodlands Township is proud to offer a Parks and Recreation Management Internship program. Our vision for the program is that it be the most intensive internship in the country. While this program is heavily geared towards students who are in NRPA Accredited programs, this does not mean students from other fields (forestry, planning, public administration) will not be considered. Individuals will receive training in recreation programming, parks planning, administration and other facets of parks and recreation management. We view our role as an extension of the University and are prepared to spend valuable time teaching and mentoring students.

Our program attempts to serve the intern by allowing the student to: network with professionals, develop professionalism, demonstrate, refine, and acquire competencies, work toward securing an entry level position, and bridge the gap between theory and practice. Secondly, we have reviewed the Learning Outcomes, Standards and Assessment from the 2013 Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism and Related Professions Standards and have tied those outcomes to projects, tasks and assignments that you will be assigned during your time with The Woodlands Township. Finally, if selected, the intern will be asked to fill out the Recreation Management Competency Assessment. This instrument will allow us to understand your level of competency in the areas of communication, community relations, interpersonal skills, leadership and management, and professional practice thus allowing us to mold the internship based on your needs. We are currently looking for a highly motivated student, senior or graduate student, who is majoring in parks and recreation or another closely related field. Applicants with previous experience in parks and recreation are preferred. We are seeking an individual who has a strong commitment to the concept of community. The Woodlands Township

The Woodlands is located on 27,000 acres of forestland, 30 miles north of Houston, Texas. The planned community, developed by The Woodlands Operating Company, L.P., opened in October, 1974, and has grown steadily to become one of the region's most desired places to live and work. The projected population of 120,000 will enjoy a framework combining residency, industry, religious institutes, schools, public facilities, shopping, recreation and the natural environment in a convenient and aesthetically-pleasing community whole. The Woodlands is considered Houston’s “new leisure destination” with over 5 million square feet of shopping, dining and entertainment.

The Woodlands Township, now the official governing body of The Woodlands, was created with the merger of the Community Associations of The Woodlands and Town Center Improvement District (TCID). The Woodlands Township collects an ad valorem property tax as well as sales and use tax and hotel occupancy tax. In 2007, voters overwhelmingly approved a change in governmental structure that allowed residents to ultimately determine their future and release The Woodlands from annexation possibilities by the cities of Houston and Conroe. The Woodlands Township entered into Regional Participation Agreements (RPAs) with both cities that allow residents of The Woodlands to decide their future governance. The former area of the TCID, which is the Town Center area, expanded from 1.8 square miles to an area of approximately 44 square miles representing the entire area of The Woodlands.

The name of the Town Center Improvement District was also changed to The Woodlands Township at that time. The intent of the 2007 legislation was to consolidate quasi-governmental operations for The Woodlands. In order to accomplish this goal, TCID and the Community Associations of The Woodlands agreed upon a plan to consolidate operations and responsibilities into the new Township government. In 2008, The Woodlands Township and the Community Associations of The Woodlands entered into a Transition Agreement, which provided for a consolidation of service delivery systems by 2012. This was changed through an amendment to the agreement accelerating the proposed consolidation date to January, 2010. The Woodlands Township assumed all responsibilities and services previously provided by the Community Associations on January 1, 2010, and the Community Associations were dissolved.

The Woodlands Township provides, or contracts for others to provide, services including police and fire protection, garbage and recycling collection, parks and pathway maintenance, streetscape maintenance, covenant enforcement and recreation programming for existing and future community associations in The Woodlands.

The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation

The Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains more than 190 miles of hike and bike paths, 120 parks, 12 neighborhood pools, the Rob Fleming Aquatic Center, 81 Playgrounds, 63 Gazebos, 39 Ponds with fishing, 67 Tennis Courts, 30 Multi Purpose Fields, 9 Sand Volleyball Courts, 8 Wheel Friendly Areas, 1 Skate Park, 2 BMX areas, 2,630 acres of Open Space Reserves, 27 Basketball Courts, 2 Disc Golf Courses, 3 Off Leash Dog Areas and The Riva Row Boathouse. The Woodlands parks have won numerous accolades by leading organizations such as the National Recreation and Parks Association, Texas Recreation and Parks Society, Texas Public Pool Council and Aquatics International.

Hike and bike pathways are located throughout the villages of The Woodlands, so residents can enjoy a variety of activities, such as walking, jogging, bicycling and rollerblading. Pathways are also conveniently linked throughout neighborhoods to parks and area shopping centers.

Quality recreational opportunities, while contributing to the overall aesthetics of The Woodlands, also increase residents’ overall quality of life and satisfaction with the community. Residents go to parks to be alone or with other people, to exercise or to sit quietly and read, families gather to play, picnic or enjoy each other’s company, and residents can stroll or meet friends.

A goal of the Parks and Recreation Department is to be timely and responsive in addressing the needs and concerns of residents of The Woodlands. Internship Guidelines

1. The intern will be assigned to a supervisor who will develop a work schedule and job responsibilities for the intern, prior to the start date.

2. The supervisor will orient the intern on the policies, procedures and philosophies of The

Woodlands Township. 3. The supervisor will be responsible for evaluating the job performance of the intern on

weekly basis and conduct weekly meetings to assess the progress of the intern. 4. The supervisor will assign the following specific projects and duties to the intern:

a. Schedule of required meetings b. A special event, program, or project to organize and conduct c. Schedule meetings/interviews with Department Superintendent/Managers and

other nearby agencies (if possible).

5. The Woodlands Township will follow guidelines set forth by the intern’s university and supervisor.

University Supervisor Responsibilities

The Woodlands Township encourages the University supervisor to be actively involved. We would like frequent communication between the University supervisor and The Woodlands Township during the period of the internship. This may be accomplished by personal visits, telephone conversations or a combination of both. We would appreciate a list of your intern requirements, as well as deadline dates for the student’s work.

Intern Benefits

The Woodlands has one internship in the summer, lasting May – August. The intern will receive a stipend of $5,000 for the duration of their employment (12-16 weeks). The stipend will be distributed in 6 payments of $833.33 after every 2 weeks completed in the internship.

The Woodlands Township’s liability insurance and workers compensation program will cover the interns when on the job. The intern’s personal insurance or the University is responsible for any other insurance coverage of the intern during the internship.

The intern will have mileage reimbursed if required to use personal car for work purposes, once reporting to work. The intern will be responsible for providing proof of insurance for his or her own personal vehicle.

The intern will be rewarded with the experiences that will carry them over the bridge from student to professional. Our internship experience is geared to meet the needs of each intern individually. Interns will be responsible for listing what they feel are important professional skills to bridge this gap. Intern Responsibilities

Interns are required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, including holidays, evenings and weekends. The intern will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing/lodging during the internship. Interns will be subject to both a drug screen and a background investigation. The first two weeks of the internship are probationary. An intern may be dismissed if the Department determines he/she is not adequately prepared to perform the functions required of an intern. This determination is made after careful consideration by the intern coordinator and the intern’s immediate supervisor. The Woodlands Township requires the intern to provide transportation to and from work. A company vehicle may/will be used when needed to do work related items. The interns will be compensated for mileage when asked to use their own vehicle. Interns will be required to fill out Recreation Management Competency Assessment prior to beginning their internship and at the end of their internship. At the end of the internship, the intern’s supervisor will also fill out the Recreation Management Competency Assessment on the intern. In addition, the intern must provide The Woodlands Township with written goals and objectives within the first two weeks of the internship. Those goals should include: career goals, internship goals, and contributions the intern feels they can add to the department. Interns will have a minimum of two evaluations during the internship. Written copies of this evaluation will be kept on file, as well as sent to the intern’s University supervisor. Interns will be asked to evaluate their internship program at the end of the term.

Interns will create news releases & fliers for their programs and other assigned. Interns will plan, organize, coordinate and conduct a new special event or program. Interns are to set up appointments with the Superintendents, Managers and the Director of Parks and Recreation. The intern should gain an understanding of the duties/responsibilities of each position and how it relates to the overall department/community. Interns will attend all meetings assigned by supervisor.

Interns are required to represent the company in a professional manner, including dress, punctuality and enthusiastic participation in the working situation. Interns must be willing to spend the time to get the job done right, which includes nights and weekends. Interns are required to familiarize themselves with the policies, goals and general operations of the Company including:

A. A review of policy manuals B. Discussion of policies with supervisor/program staff C. Attendance at staff meetings at the supervisory and administrative levels. D. Attendance at a Board of Director Meetings

Interns will be required to present a final portfolio to the Director of Parks and Recreation upon completion of their internship experience. The portfolio will include updated resume and work samples (projects, flyers, budget forecasts, planning documents, etc)

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is everything? The roads of The Woodlands can be confusing if you are not familiar with its layout. Maps are provided in some of the guides and brochures. When you arrive someone will show you where most of our facilities are located, but learning street names and having a map are great aids.

What hours do I work? A field student will work the 40+ hours a week necessary to get his/her job successfully completed.

What will my responsibilities be? To see that your assignments are carried out to the very best of your ability.

How do I find out about The Woodlands programs? The Township’s website and the Action Guides are excellent resources to use to find out what The Woodlands has to offer.

How do I find out about policies and procedures? Take time to ask questions before you act. You will attend a new employee orientation at the beginning of the internship. Reference you employee handbook for company policies and procedures.

Do I get an office? A work area will be established when you arrive, based on who your direct supervisor will be.

Where do I go for supplies? There is a central storage area where you may obtain basic supplies, such as pens, paper, etc. If you need any addition supplies that cannot be found in storage, please let us know.

What if I am sick? Call the office first thing in the morning and leave a message for your supervisor. Inform them of any commitments you have for the day so that arrangements can be made.

What about lunch? How long depends on your schedule and workload. Normal lunch is approximately one hour for an eight hours work day.

What about transportation? It is up to you to provide transportation to and from work. Department vehicles are used for assigned task only and will be provided if needed.

What about housing? You will have to arrange your own housing during your internship.

Will I be reimbursed for travel? If you need to travel for your job, your mileage will be reimbursed if you use your own vehicle.

What do I wear? Dress will depend upon specific assignments; however, normal dress is business casual. When working maintenance, dress accordingly. The same thing would hold true for program assignments, office work, meetings, etc.

When will I be evaluated? You will be evaluated on your performance and attitude utilizing the goals and objectives you have developed at the beginning of your internship. The two evaluations will be in written form and reviewed with you, which will provide you with an opportunity to comment. You will receive a copy of the written evaluation.
