What is a Budget?
An itemized summary of planned expenses for a given period along with the estimated income for the same period.
An estimate of income and expenditure for a set period of time.
![Page 57: Internship & Beyond presentation](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052209/568c4dd91a28ab4916a5943d/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
Function of a Budget To allow you to manage your money. You can
see where your money is coming from and where it is being spent.
![Page 58: Internship & Beyond presentation](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052209/568c4dd91a28ab4916a5943d/html5/thumbnails/58.jpg)
Family Budget A family budget is the main tool used to
manage personal finances and save money. It can be simple or detailed depending on your needs.
Track your income and expenditure for an entire month to make a family budget.
![Page 59: Internship & Beyond presentation](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052209/568c4dd91a28ab4916a5943d/html5/thumbnails/59.jpg)

Time Frame Budgets are made on a monthly basis.
Figure out how much money you make each month and what your monthly expenses are.

Outline Income should include:
net pay any other income you have (e.g.. rental income, child
support, alimony, investment income or a second job).
Expenditure should include: any money you spend i.e.
mortgage/rent, food, transportation, clothing, childcare or any other expenses.

![Page 62: Internship & Beyond presentation](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052209/568c4dd91a28ab4916a5943d/html5/thumbnails/62.jpg)
Considerations It can be difficult to assign one monthly dollar
amount to be an expense, if you don’t spend the same amount every month. It is recommended that an average dollar amount be used.
Creating a budget cont’d
![Page 63: Internship & Beyond presentation](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052209/568c4dd91a28ab4916a5943d/html5/thumbnails/63.jpg)
Get 3 months pay stub and average them to determine the average monthly income.
Get 3 months of bills, add them and divide by 3 to calculate your monthly fixed expenses such as mortgage/rent, utilities, car payments and insurance (fixed expenses).
Average 3 months of other expenses such as groceries, clothing, credit card expenses, medical bills etc.
Creating a budget cont’d
![Page 64: Internship & Beyond presentation](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052209/568c4dd91a28ab4916a5943d/html5/thumbnails/64.jpg)
Add this amount to the fixed expenses to determine total expenses for the month.
Evaluate your expenses; look for opportunities to economize and develop a plan for action to cut back spending in specific areas.
Develop a monthly budget and stick to it.
Set up a savings plan such as passbook a/c, certificate of deposit or individual retirement account and begin making regular deposits.

Potentials/Possibilities Track your income and expenses monthly;
You can easily see if you are spending too much money in an area. Evaluate how the plan is working, then fine tune to produce the desired results.
It is not how much you earn but how much you save.
