Dear Friends of the International Wolf Center:

We write with appreciation for your support of wolf education and the Center during a year that brought change to the organization and to

the economic world at large.

Visitation held steady as more than 43,000 guests came to meet wolf pups, Denali and Aidan. Ely education staff gave 296 summer presentations involv-ing the pups. Participants learned wolf biologists’ skills as they logged their observations of the pups’ behaviors on laptop computers provided by a grant from Hewlett-Packard. With the death of 15-year-old wolves, Lakota and MacKenzie, the Center’s retirement pen was empty, and the last members of the 1993 pack were fondly memorialized.

We celebrated an important environmental landmark in 2008 with a special issue of International Wolf magazine focused on the 50-year anniversary of the wolf-moose study on Isle Royale. This work and other research conducted on wolf populations worldwide informs the Center’s educational efforts. It provides the science government regulators and wildlife managers need to introduce new populations, and determine the health and viability of recovering wolf populations.

In Ely, planning began for a major remodeling project in the lobby and exhibit areas as the U.S. Forest Service prepared to move its office from the Center to new facilities. The staff began work on a new database and improved Web site to provide better contact with a public interested in wolves. The organization’s leadership was also in transition, as long-time staffer Mary Ortiz took the position of executive director, interim, in the fall. The

Center’s Twin Cities office moved from French Regional Park to a new location on Winnetka Avenue in Minneapolis.

The Center prepared for a challeng-ing economic year, and a somewhat reduced staff was determined to maintain quality standards for education about the wolf and steady operations through the forecasted tough times.

2008 HighlightsRenovation in ElyThe Center finalized renovation plans with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to revamp the front entrance and exhibit areas of its inter-pretive center. The Center created a new, temporary entrance by the office area, and staff doubled up on office space to accommodate the retail store and admissions. The Science Museum of Minnesota oversaw the disman-tling and securing of the Wolves and Humans exhibit for renovation. Two new exhibits, the behavioral observa-tion kiosk, in which visitors are asked to record their own observations of wolf behavior, and the WolfQuest video game, will provide visitors with fun, interactive experiences until the Wolves and Humans exhibit returns in late 2009.

Award-Winning Program Reaches 19 States and Two ProvincesStudents in classrooms around the country saw and talked to a Center educator in real-time via videocon-ferencing technology. The Center taught classes in 19 states and two Canadian provinces. Students learned about wolf ecology and literature in virtual field trips that meet state and national education standards while stimulating discussions about science, social studies, language arts, math and geography. A new core program, Pup 101, was introduced this year. In Pup 101, students participate in interactive discussions regarding the stages of wolf development and construct blueprints of their ideal wolf den. Students watch live footage of pups practicing their instinctive behaviors within the hierarchy of the Center ambassador wolves. The Center received an Honorable Mention Pinnacle Award from the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC) in recognition of its outstanding videoconferencing programs.

Filming of Pup 101More than 43,000 people visited the International Wolf Center’s flagship interpretive center in Ely, Minnesota, this year. Visitors had a unique opportunity to see the Center’s newest ambassador wolves practice their instinctive behaviors within the hierarchy of the International Wolf Center Exhibit Pack during the filming of Pup 101.

Saving a Piece of Wolf ParadiseThe interpretive center also added a new movie, “Wolves in Paradise,” to its theater. The movie features ranchers and environmentalists, who team up to protect open space from developers. Together they learn how to share this last corner of the untamed West with wolves.

The Center makes every attempt to ensure accuracy in its member

and donor lists.

For corrections, please email the

development office at [email protected]

or call 763-560-7374 Ext. 228.

Membership: One of the easiest ways to help wolves is to become a member of the Center. This tax-deductible donation helps deliver educational messages about the wolf to thousands of people around the world. Members also receive a variety of benefits, including a subscription to the premier quarterly magazine, International Wolf, free admission to the interpretive center in Ely and discounts on merchandise and adventure programs.

Matching Gifts Program: Contributors can double the impact of their support by participating in an employer’s matching gifts program. To find out whether your employer offers matching gifts opportunities, please contact your personnel office.

Workplace Giving: Many businesses offer the opportunity to support the Center through workplace charitable giving campaigns. The Center participates in both the Wild Animals Worldwide and Independent Charities of America campaigns. For more information on your company’s workplace giving program, please contact the personnel office.

Memorial and Honorary Gifts: Making a contribution in memory or in honor of a person is a powerful way to remember a friend or loved one. This gift provides the opportunity to express sympathy or to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday, graduation, anniversary or holiday.

Bequests and Planned Gifts: The Alpha Legacy Program recog-nizes the generosity and foresight of individuals who have included the Center in their wills or other estate plans. Planned gifts allow individuals to leave a legacy and provide an important source of revenue for the International Wolf Center. Planned gifts take many forms, including outright bequests of cash, securities or property, life-time income gifts, or designation of the Center as a beneficiary of a life insurance or retirement plan.

Outright Gifts of Cash: Many of our contributors pledge their support through annual unrestricted gifts of cash, which provide vital support for our environmental education programming.

WAY S T O G I V EThe International Wolf Center’s success in teaching the world about wolves and advancing

the survival of wolf populations depends on the continued support of our generous donors.

Gifts come in many forms, and each contribution is greatly appreciated.

Please consider these options for charitable giving.
