rs? What is Honors?

At American Honors, we believe that the integration of a range of key elements creates a world-class honors experience:

AmericanHonors.org

An emphasis on depth versus breadth: We contend that an honors learning experience is about quality, not quantity. Rather than covering more material or assigning more coursework, we encourage faculty to challenge students to go deeper into the course content and to do so in ways that engage their higher-level thinking skills.

Academic rigor: While an honors course will address the same course learning outcomes as its non-honors analog, it will utilize high-impact learning approaches and supplement the experience by including higher-level learning outcomes.

Highly motivated honors students: Selected for their academic potential and strength of character, these students seek a supportive learning community that is a force for positive change in the college and community. Honors students expect to be challenged, and their involvement in a similarly engaged cohort creates the positive peer pressure and shared high academic expectations to keep them motivated.

Excellent faculty: Selected for the mastery of their subject and commitment to creating an engaging learning experience, faculty have the opportunity to collaborate in communities of practice with others across the AH network, sharing new pedagogical approaches, exchanging best practices, and continuously improving through innovative course design.

Interdisciplinary integration: The most pressing issues facing our society and the innovations required to solve them do not fall into traditional academic disciplines. AH will work with faculty to integrate cross-cutting themes and foster strong student connections across disciplines.

Digital literacy: Digital literacy is the ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate information through multiple forms of digital media. Students must learn to navigate online social tools and research databases and to discriminate between legitimate sources of information and those that represent opinion or commentary. Students must also learn how to present information to peers and faculty in dynamic ways.

Global awareness: We want students to deepen their understanding of the opportunities and challenges created by an increasingly connected, interdependent world.

Service learning: We seek to develop leaders with strong integrity. AH students understand that they have both the responsibility and opportunity to give back to their fellow students and the community.

Page 9: International Viewbook (English)

Enhance capability for leadership and self-advocacy leading to the creation of positive change.

Synthesize information from multiple disciplines to create a more fully contextualized response to a problem or issue.

Work effectively in groups, demonstrating an ability to consult with others, reach consensus, and collaborate to create solutions to a given problem.

Utilize critical thinking to solve problems, including supporting claims with relevant and credible evidence, recognizing and responding to bias, and applying accurate and logical analysis to achieve desired outcomes.

Demonstrate effective written and oral communication to a wide range of audiences.

Apply knowledge to academic research, digital literacy, and the creation of new ideas, processes, and/or approaches to relevant issues.

Demonstrate knowledge and sensitivity to a diversity of opinions resulting from ethnic, cultural, and national differences, and synthesize these viewpoints to respond to global questions.

U.S. Higher Education System Transfer Process Students often choose to earn their undergraduate degrees in the United States in order to take advantage of the flexibility of the U.S. higher education system. In the United States, students have the ability to transfer between institutions of higher learning. One of the most common transfer pathways is from 2-year community colleges to 4-year universities.

Transferring is very common, but there are no national guidelines that ensure course credits will transfer to 4-year schools. That’s why American Honors students work closely with their advisors to successfully apply, gain admission, and transfer credits to their top 4-year university.

The American Honors transfer processAmerican Honors students get complete support and one-on-one advising sessions to ensure a smooth transfer process. From enrollment through transfer, students get personal guidance on every part of the process: making a degree plan, selecting courses, selecting a school, and applying for financial aid and scholarships. American Honors students are coached through a five-step process to help them transfer.

1. Select classes likely to transfer. Work with your advisor to select classes, a major, and degree pathway that are both interesting and likely to transfer.

2. Perform well academically. Demonstrate strong performance and growth both academically and outside the classroom. Get involved in a club, sport, or activity that is meaningful to you. Seek out leadership positions. Continue to earn high grades and work closely with your professors. Consider whom you might ask for a letter or recommendation in the fall of your second year.

3. Research schools and apply. Research, visit, and apply to 4-year schools with the help of your advisor. Plan some visits during spring or summer break. If you can’t make a visit, speak to a student ambassador or alumnus to learn more. Prepare your personal statement. Review the requirements for the major you want at the schools on your list. Don’t be afraid to contact schools with specific questions.

4. Receive admissions decisions and credit evaluation results. Receive an admissions decision from schools where you applied. Carefully review credit evaluations of the 4-year schools’ admissions offices and academic departments.

5. Evaluate offer packages, select a university, and enroll. Evaluate options, taking into account financial aid packages and degree audit reports. Search for outside scholarships through Phi Theta Kappa, FastWeb, CollegeFish and local sites. Accept an offer of admission and arrange housing at your transfer school if necessary. Send final grades/transcripts to your four-year of choice.

After years of working and taking care of his family, Robert decided to return to school and enrolled in the American Honors program. Very diligent in his transfer application process, Robert was accepted to eight top universities and plans to attend Stanford in Fall 2014, where he received a full-ride scholarship.

CARLOS, American Honors at Ivy Tech, Class of 2013Transferred to Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis

“As I began college, I had no clue what I wanted to study. But after 2 years, that has changed. I was very well prepared for a four- year institution after all of the American Honors advising and seminars. All of my hard work is focused towards my dream of becoming the CEO of a leading company. Though it seems so far in the distance, I am determined to do all I can to reach this goal.”

WIN, American Honors at Community Colleges of Spokane, Class of 2013Transferred to Rutgers University

“My advisor helped me sign up for classes and create a plan for transferring to a four-year university. Without American Honors, I think I would have had just enough credits to graduate from community college and hope that a local university would accept me. But now I can do more.”

SARAH, American Honors at Ivy Tech, Class of 2014Transferred to Indiana University — Purdue University Indianapolis

“I was attracted to the idea of getting an honors education at the community college price point and location. In addition, the connections AH has in the 4-year college world is a wonderful asset. The advising has turned out to be one of the key benefits of my AH experience, in addition to learning from an awesome, hand-picked, faculty. My end goal has changed since my first introduction to AH in that I am no longer satisfied with an associate's degree. I want to complete my bachelor’s degree as soon as possible, and then work towards the goal of a post-graduate degree.”

JESSICA, American Honors at Community Colleges of Spokane, Class of 2014 Transferred to American University

“When I was in middle school, I was put in a group of students who were labeled as unlikely to go on to college. My parents hadn't gone to college and their parents didn't finish high school ... Now I am attending one of the top schools in my intended major, in Washington D.C., and will be graduating with little to no debt.”

MEGHIN, American Honors at Ivy Tech, Class of 2014 Transferred to University of Walla Walla

“Initially I didn’t come into school planning to be a doctor. My plan was to be a counselor for children, and so to switch from the social sciences to the medical is a pretty huge leap… It is going to be a challenge, but I know that it’s very doable because I have the support that I need.”

ALEXIS, American Honors at Community Colleges of Spokane, current student

“Before American Honors, I was terrified to dream big. I had just taken a huge leap into an art school, only to find that something I had always wanted was no longer for me. With the help of the AH support team, I've grown and allowed myself to reach for greater things again.”
