International Student ServicesInternational Student Services (ISS) is your starting point and offers ongoing support throughout your studies at The University of Winnipeg.

GET READYAcademic Advising – ISS is available to help you understand the regulations and requirements of Arts, Science, and Business and Economics degrees, explain policies and procedures, and to assist you with the registration process. Airport Reception – ISS provides an Airport Reception service to NEW international students arriving during the move-in dates to residences at the start of an academic term. Please complete and submit the Airport Reception online form, at least seven days prior to your arrival.

The International Student Guidebook – offers information on International Student Services, housing, health insurance, tips for living in Winnipeg, and much more!

GET CONNECTED

Facebook – Join our Facebook group called ‘The University of Winnipeg International Student Services’ to receive important updates, learn about academic and social opportunities, view photographs, and make contact with other UWinnipeg students.

GET WHAT YOU NEED Immigration Advising – ISS offers personalized immigration advising to assist students with understanding Canadian permit, visa and work regulations. Most international students require a valid study permit to study in Canada and must present their original study permit to ISS upon arrival. Depending on their country of citizenship, some students may also require a temporary resident visa to enter Canada. Students may be eligible to work while studying, depending on their student status.

Health Insurance – The ISS can assist students in determining if they are eligible for Manitoba Provincial Health Care coverage and, if eligible, how to register for it. The ISS can also assist students in understanding which additional health insurance plan(s) will be required during the time of study.

Orientation – ISS offers an orientation day to prepare you for your studies at UWinnipeg and to help you make a smooth transition to life in Canada.

GET INVOLVED Cultural and Social Activities – Many activities are organized for international students, including ice-skating, skiing, trips to the beach, hockey games, festivals, and more! Activities will be posted on the Web, advertised in our newsletter, and on our Facebook group page.

Mentor Program – Are you new to UWinnipeg? Do you need some help making the transition to a new school or new city? Sign up for our Student Mentor Program! We’ll match you with an experienced student who can help you learn about university life. A Tutor Program is also available to all international students.

Study, Work and Live in Winnipeg, Manitoba

Off Campus – International students who are registered full time, hold a valid study permit, and are pursuing an undergraduate degree program at UWinnipeg may be eligible to work off campus. There are many job opportunities downtown, right next to the University.

Co-op and Internship ProgramsSome academic programs at The University of Winnipeg include work experience as part of the curriculum. Students who wish to participate in a co-op or internship program must apply for a co-op work permit as well as a study permit.

Work In Canada After GraduationStudents who have completed an undergraduate degree at UWinnipeg may be eligible to apply for a post-graduation work permit, which offers the opportunity to work in Canada after graduation.

LIVEFree Manitoba Basic Health Care Coverage: If you are an international student who has a valid study permit issued for a minimum of six months and also plan to live in Manitoba for a minimum of six months in a calendar year, you are eligible to receive Manitoba Health coverage for free. In addition to Manitoba Health, all international students are required to purchase additional health coverage through the University. The Manitoba Tuition Fee Income Tax Rebate: By providing post-secondary graduates an income tax rebate of up to 60% on their eligible tuition fees, the Tuition Fee Income Tax Rebate helps recent graduates like you pay for your education while living and working in Manitoba.

Immigrate to Canada: The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) The Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program offers the opportunity for international student graduates to apply for Permanent Residence status in Canada. For more information, please visit the MPNP site: www.immigratemanitoba.com

McFeetors Hall: Great-West Life Student ResidenceMcFeetors Hall offers modern, air-conditioned dorm-style units with private washroom and access to common entertainment/lounge areas, study areas, and laundry facilities. Available room options include single and double furnished dorms. Prices start at $3,725 per term (including the basic meal plan).

Living on Campus

Lions ManorClose to campus, Lions Manor offers a cafeteria, student lounges, and on-floor laundry facilities. Choose from our furnished dorm rooms, furnished bachelor (studio) and one-bedroom apartments, or our unfurnished bachelor (studio) and one-bedroom apartments. Prices start at $500 per month, or $2,000 per four-month term.

Balmoral HousesBalmoral Houses appeal to people who enjoy a family-friendly environment. Each house has between four and eleven single, furnished rooms with tasteful amenities. Shared kitchen, bathroom, and laundry facilities are available on site. Pricing for Balmoral House rooms starts at $500 per month or $2,000 per term.

Homestay Fee $700 Includes airport pickup, private bedroom, shared bathroom, and food (monthly rate quoted).

Total $900 Total for first month fees. Months following will be $700. After 105 days, fee will be reduced to $675 per month.

* $200 placement fee is charged only once, at point of application.

Homestay Live with an English-speaking host family in Winnipeg. Homestay is a great way to share in lively and friendly discussions in English, learn about Canadian home life and culture, and improve your level of conversational English.

Explore the study of human movement through any one of our program areas designed to help you develop an understanding of research and practice in physical activity, fitness, exercise, and sport. Students studying in Kinesiology specialize in areas of Exercise Science, Sport Coaching, or Athletic Therapy.

THE UNITED HEALTH & RECPLEXUWinnipeg’s new multi-sport facility opened in September 2014, and includes an indoor green space for sports such as soccer, flag football and track and field, as well as cultural and community events.

Special Entrance Scholarships These scholarships are given to international high school students studying at a Canadian high school or students studying abroad in a school with a Canadian curriculum. To be considered, students must have a minimum 80% final grade 12 admission average. No application required. Students must apply for admission to the University by March 1 in order to be considered.

Value: $800-$2,250 Number: Unlimited Level: Undergraduate

In-Course AwardsAfter completing one year (two terms) at The University of Winnipeg, international students can apply for a wide range of undergraduate awards and scholarships for continuing students.

Value: $100-$10,000 Number: over 600 Level: Undergraduate, Graduate, and PACE.
