Profile:Executive Director, earned his Ph.D. in Food Security from the Natural Resources
Institute (NRI), University of Greenwich, United Kingdom. Prior to joining SDPI he served as
Head of Programs, OXFAM GB Pakistan. He has conducted intensive research on Food
Insecurity, Regional Trade, and Globalization and Rural Livelihoods. His other research
interests include regional integration, institutional reforms, disaster management, poverty-
environment nexus and sustainable natural resources governance. He is currently working on
assessing the magnitude of Pakistans illegal economy. He led the team that compiled state offood insecurity in Pakistan: a report launched in 2010 and prepared in collaboration with the
UN World Food Program and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. He also led the
team that formulated National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) in collaboration with
Ministry of Environment and United National Environment Program.
Dr. Suleri is called on to give policy advice and is serving on various policy forums/advisory
boards at national, regional, and international levels. He is also serving on Board of Studies of
various universities and co-supervises PhD and MSc students under NCCR program.
He represents the civil society of Pakistan in various working groups, steering committee, and
technical committees formed by the Government of Pakistan at the Planning Commission;
Ministry of Commerce; Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Livestock; Ministry of Environment
(MOE); and Pakistan Agriculture Research Council. He also represented the Pakistani civil
society at the Doha and Cancun Ministerial Conferences of WTO as well as World Food Summit
(FYL). He was a part of the official delegation of Government of Pakistan to WTO Hong Kong
Ministerial Conference. Dr. Suleri also imparts trainings and gives lectures on various aspects of
sustainable development to parliamentarians, academia, government officials, journalists, and
development practitioners.
He has been published in many national and international journals. He also contributes his policy
analysis on sustainable development issues in major national and regional papers. He is invited

as guest analyst in electronic media on political economy of sustainable development. His book,
Social Dimensions of Globalization? A case of Pakistan was declared as Publication of Most

Profile:Dr. Vaqar Ahmed has worked as an Economist with the UNDP, Asian Development
Bank, World Intellectual Property Organization, Oxford Policy Management, Irish Rural
Economy Research Center and Ministries of Finance, Planning and Commerce in Pakistan. He is
a visiting faculty member at the National University of Ireland, IMT Institute of Advanced
Studies in Italy and Pakistan Institute of Trade and Development. His PhD students are workingon an analysis of European Union agricultural reforms, socio-economic impact of AIDS in
Nigeria, evaluation of free trade agreements, simulating growth impact of infrastructure policies
and labour market inequalities in Pakistan. He has served as an Advisor to the Planning
Commission of Pakistan, and was also the head of macroeconomics section which is responsible
for the formulation of annual, medium and perspective development plans. He was a technical
associate in the economic task forces constituted by the Prime Minister of Pakistan including
Panel of Economists (2008), Task force on Private Sector Development (2009) and Working
Group on Macroeconomic Framework for Tenth Five Year Plan 2010-15.
He is currently a Research Fellow at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and
has published in areas such as quantitative analysis of growth, trade and taxation policies,
remittances, free trade agreements, trade in services and infrastructure development. His team is
regularly updating the quantitative models used towards forecasting medium term
macroeconomic framework for Pakistan. These models include: Financial Programming Model,
Computable General Equilibrium Model and Microsimulation Models. At SDPI he is also
coordinating the National Network for Socio-economic Modelers in Pakistan. He has recently
established a project titled: Building Capacities for Economic Analysis at Local Level, which
aims to integrate the economics departments in public sector universities of Pakistan.

Profile:Qasim Ali Shah has over eleven years of extensive experience of working with the
government, multilateral organizations and international NGOs including the Ministry of
Commerce, Planning and Development Department, Government of the Punjab, United Nations
Development Programme and ActionAid International. His areas of expertise include proposal
writing for fund raising, project design, management, implementation and social assessments. He
has worked at the policy level in the area of poverty reduction strategy, gender budgeting, rural
development, agriculture, and international trade. Qasim is a strong team player and leader,
managing a team of over 20 multidisciplinary professionals at SDPI. He has a natural sciences
background and holds a year-long diploma in World Trade and Intellectual Property Rights. He
is widely travelled and comfortable in multi-cultural settings. Qasim has a few publications in his
name; some of his work has been published internationally.

Profile:Mr. Kanwar Iqbal is associated with SDPI as Senior Research Associate - Environment.
His major responsibilities are to coordinate and manage the research projects on environmentand climate change including Adaptation and Mitigation responses, Bioenergy & its
Sustainability in South Asia, Alternate Energy, Sustainable Industrial Development in South
Asia, and International Trade & Environment including Carbon Trading. He is a representative
of SDPI as an Expert Member of Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) in
two working groups (working on Green House Gases related matters) of ISOs Project
Committee ISO/PC-248 for Bioenergy Sustainability Criteria. He has also been the member of
resolution committee of ISO/PC-248. Besides, he is serving as adviser to SAARC Chamber of
Commerce and Industry (SCCI) for its initiative on "Energy Cooperation, Climate Change and
Sustainability in South Asia". At present, he is also the Board Member of UN-REDDProgramme Policy Board, Geneva, and South Asia Focal Point for Shipbreaking Platform,
Belgium.
SDPI has recently published his Policy Paper for REDD+ readiness in Pakistan while SAARC

"Energy Policy in South Asia: The Way Forward to Prompt Regional Trade" and "Climate
Change issues in SOUTH ASIA: Prospects for Carbon Trade".
With a degree of M.Phil in Environmental Science, he possesses diverse range of more than
eleven (11) years professional experience in thedomain of environment and climate change.
Before joining SDPI, he had been working with ACTED Pakistan as Provincial ProgrammeManager, International Islamic University as Lecturer (Environmental Science), laboratories of
HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, Karachi, Pakistan, National Environmental Consulting
(Pvt.) Ltd. Lahore, Pakistan, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and UNICEF funded Water,
Environment & Sanitation (WES) Project Bahawalpur. In addition, he also taught the courses of
environmental sciences at various universities. He has also worked as a consultant for conducting
several Environmental Assessments studies (including Initial Environmental Examinations,
Environmental Assessment, Environmental Management Plans and Environmental Impact
Assessments), Environmental Management System for ISO-14001 (development and
implementation for 56 Leather Industries in Pakistan under Information and CommunicationTechnologies Project of Dutch Embassy), and EMS auditing of several industries.
