GENERAL RULES GENERAL INFORMATION The Rescue Dog tests qualify each dog for their area of use. Successful completion of a test is proof of proper Rescue Dog training at that particular level. This is one of the basic requirements in order to be considered mission-ready by the participating organisations. The mission-readiness of a team is determined and recognised exclusively by its home organisations, which can stipulate further requirements such as additional dog handler skills, electronic communication skills, alpine rescue, age limits for both dog and handler, physical fitness, personal equipment preparedness, First Aid courses, periodic re-testing, etc. Tests can be held throughout the year. If the safety of the handler or dog is in question, testing must be postponed to a later date. Dogs of all sizes, breeds and gender may enter the test. A handler is only allowed to enter one Testing Event Competition on any given day. After successfully completing a test on level A, the dog must wait at least 26 days before participating in a test in the same category at the next level, and is to meet all the age requirements. Handlers are allowed to lead more than one dog - each dog, however, must be lead by only one handler. Short voice signals are to be used. The use of the dog's name in conjunction with the voice signal is permitted. This combination counts as a single command. Bitches in heat may participate in all tests but must be kept separated from all of the other candidates and will be evaluated last. After failing a test the dog must wait at least six days before re-taking the test at the same level and category. Sick or possibly contagious animals are to be excluded from all tests and are not allowed to enter the testing area judge may at his discretion discontinue any exercise, if the dog is clearly not on the control of his handler or has obviously not been properly prepared, or if becomes afferent that the dog is unwilling to execute any given exercise.

TESTING AUTHORISATION Test authorisation is conferred to national kennel organisation. Test scores must be accepted and recognised internationally. A testing-event must have at least four dog handlers in order to be recognised.

LOGISTICS The organisational portion of the testing-event is the responsibility of the Test Organising Officer (TO), who is charged with overseeing the preparatory phases, as well as the actual administrative details of the testing-event itself.

LIABILITY The dog handler is liable for any injuries caused by his dog during the testing-event. The owner of the dog is liable for any injuries or damages caused by the dog and must be properly insured. All instructions given by the judge or TO are to be accepted and voluntarily executed at the handlers own risk.

Proof of required vaccinations must be furnished to the Testing Authorities upon request. AGE LIMITATIONS The dog must have reached the following age on the day of testing: RH-E Test 14 months Level A-Test 18 months Level B-Test 19 months Level C-Test 20 months TEMPERAMENT TEST The judge (TJ) is to observe the temperament of the dog at the start of and throughout the whole test. The TJ is obliged to disqualify any animal showing obvious temperament inadequacies and to note this down in the score book. The Temperament Test evaluates : a) The self confidence and composure of the dog around strangers b) Confidence and composure during unexpected disturbances c) Resilience during difficult situations such as extended work periods, many dogs working

simultaneously, extremes in temperature and weather, presence of dust and smoke or strong, unpleasant odours etc.

d) Additional temperament inadequacies such as gun shyness, nervousness and its associated aggressiveness, aggressive disposition, fearfulness etc.

DUTIES OF THE TEST APPLICANT Every dog handler (DH) is to meet registration deadlines and appear at the test venue punctually. Any delay is to be reported to the Test Organiser (TO) immediately. Dog handlers are to present themselves to the judge fully equipped with the clothing and supplies appropriate for their phase. The handler (DH) is to comply with the instructions of the TJ and TO, and may not drop out of a test phase, even if the minimum score of the given discipline has not been reached. At the end of the test a verbal critique is to be given and the scores entered into the score/log book. Any premature termination of the test phase is to be recorded in the score/log book along with an explanation. SCORE / LOG BOOK A score/log book issued by the national kennel organisation is mandatory for every participant and must be registered in the pedigree of the dog. Score/log books of non-pedigree dogs are to be registered by the national kennel organisation. It must be presented to the TO prior to every test. The final scores are to be entered by the TO and confirmed and signed by the judge upon completion. SCORING Each test phase is scored numerically and assigned a grade. The grade and points must accurately represent the performance of each exercise. In the event of equal scores the final ranking shall be determined in the following order of priority: 1. Scentwork; 2. Obedience; 3. Dexterity. SCORING TABLES

When the sum total of an exercise adds up to a decimal, this number is to be rounded up or down according to the overall performance during the test phases. SCORE ANALYSIS In order to "Pass" the test, the dog must have obtained at least 70% of the possible points in each discipline. SCORE SHEETS The documentation of test results is to be conducted according to national regulations.

RESCUE DOG SUITABILITY Test RH - E Consists of: Scent work 100 Pts Obedience and Dexterity 100 Pts Total score 200 Pts Part A - SCENT WORK Total-Score / Scentwork : 100 Pts Adherence to the track 70 Pts Objects 3 x 10 Pts 30 Pts Time limit: 15 minutes, handler's track about 600 paces, 30 min. old. Two corners conforming to the terrain, 3 scent objects on the track, about the size of a shoe, a 10 metre leash may be used, or the exercise may be performed "off leash". The Start will be indicated. General Rules The article selected by the dog handler (DH) should be no larger than the approved size and of a colour that does not stand out markedly from the terrain. The first article is to be placed on the first leg of the track, the second article on the second leg of the track and the third article at the end of the track. The scent of the track is not allowed to be altered during the placement of the object. The dog handler (track layer) is not allowed to scuff or stand still. The scent articles are to be placed on the track, not next to it. The TJ has to discontinue the exercise if the DH has reached a distance from the track more than 10 m. The TJ may allow a larger distance due to very difficult terrain. The exercise is to discontinue in any case when the TJ has the impression that the dog is unable to resume tracking. Voice Signal: “Such” (German for „track“). Voice signals are allowed at the start and after each indicated (discovered) object. Occasional voice signals and praise are allowed - except at the corners and the objects. Performance Rules: Upon being summoned, the handler and dog are to present themselves to the judge (TJ). The use of force is not allowed before, at the start or during the tracking exercise. The DH is to remain 10 meters behind the dog whether or not a leash is used. As soon as the dog locates an object he is to indicate it immediately and convincingly without any pressure from the handler. He can remain standing, sit down or come back to the handler. Going further with the object or pick up in the lay down position will be penalised. Indicating may be shown laying, sitting or standing (variation of the three positions is allowed). The DH is then to drop the leash and go to the dog. After picking up the article the DH is to raise his arm to show that the dog has made a find. The DH is then to start the dog on the track again. At the end of the track the DH is to show all the articles to the TJ. This exercise is concluded when the TJ announces the score. Part B - OBEDIENCE AND DEXTERITY Total-Score / Obedience and dexterity: 100 Pts Exercise 1. Heeling 10 Pts Exercise 2. Off leash heeling 15 Pts Exercise 3. General Rules: Starting and implementation of the exercises are to be conducted at the command of the judge (TJ) or a person he appoints. In the start-position, the dog must sit close to the handler (DH) on his left side oriented directly forward, and the dogs shoulder may not be further forward than the handlers knee. Performance Rules: 1. Heeling 10 Pts Voice signal: „Fuss“ („Heel“) The voice signal may only be given at the start of each phase. The DH should approach the TJ with his dog, on leash, have his dog sit, and then present themselves. The leash must be held loosely in the left hand. From the start-position the dog must be attentive, heel willingly on the left side of the DH and remain oriented directly forward, with its shoulder no further forward than the handlers knee. When the DH stops, the dog must sit quickly without assistance and remain oriented forward. Forging ahead, lagging, and straying to the side by the dog, as well as stalling by the DH at the turns, will be penalised. One left-hand turn and one right-hand turn as well as one about turn must be demonstrated. Halting must be demonstrated two times after which the leash is to be removed. 2. Off leash heeling 15 Pts Voice signal: „Fuss“ („Heel“) The voice signal may only be given at the start of each phase. The DH is to approach the TJ with his dog, on leash, have his dog sit, and then present themselves. The leash is to be held loosely in the left hand. From the start-position the dog is to be attentive, heel willingly on the left side of the DH and remain oriented directly forward, with its shoulder no further forward than the handlers knee. When the DH stops the dog is to sit quickly without assistance and remain oriented forward. Forging ahead, lagging ,and straying to the side by the dog, as well as stalling by the DH at the turns, will be penalised. One left-hand turn and one right-hand turn as well as one about turn are to be demonstrated. Halting must be demonstrated one times. Two shots (calibre 6 - 9 mm) and motor sounds are to be issued as a distraction during the off leash heeling. The dog must be indifferent to the gun shots. Should the dog show any noise shyness or gun shyness, it will be disqualified from the test. Should the dog become simply anxious during the shooting this will be considered acceptable as long as the dog remains under the control of its DH. Only a dog who reacts indifferently to all forms of noise can be awarded full points. Aggressive and overly shy dogs are not be assessed. 3. Traversing of unpleasant surfaces 10 Pts Obstacle: an area of approx. 3 x 3 metres of tin, plastic, construction materials, rubble, e.g.. Voice signal: „Fuss“ („Heel“) The start-position is to be assumed in front of the obstacle. The DH heels the dog off leash over the surfaces and back showing at least one stop while going back. After leaving the area the start-position is to be assumed. 4. Off leash recall 10 Pts Voice Signal: optional From the start-position and after a command of the TJ the DH is to set his dog free. The dog is to return immediately and enthusiastically to the DH. 5. Walking through a group of people 10 Pts Voice signal: „Fuss“ („Heel“) On a command from the TJ the DH and his dog off leash are to move through a slow moving group of four people. The DH must stop at least once in the slow moving group. 6. Traversing three different obstacles 15 Pts Voice signal: „Fuss, Hopp“ („Heel, Jump“) The dog will be lead to three natural obstacles, one after another at the voice signal „Fuss“. Suitable obstacles are, for example, a bush, a barrel, or a post, with a minimum height 0,4 m and maximum height 0,8 m. With the voice signal „Hopp“ the dog must cross the obstacles by jumping or climbing with the DH remaining at his side.

7. Traversing an elevated rigid wooden board 10 Pts Voice signal: „Fuss“ (Heel) The dog will be lead to the rigid wooden board with a ramp. The length of the board should be approximately 4.5 m, the height approximately 0.4 m, with a maximum width of 0.4 m. With the voice signal „Fuss“ the dog must proceed to the ramp and transverse the wooden board confidently and calmly with the DH remaining at his side. 8. Carrying the dog 10 Pts Voice signal: optional The DH or a stranger has to pick up the dog from the ground or a higher level (e.g. a table) and carries the dog 10 m and then hand the dog over to the DH or the stranger, who carries the dog another 10 m before putting the dog down. On the command of the TJ the dog handler is to call his dog, takes the start-position and puts his dog on leash. The dog is not allowed to show any aggression towards the DH or the assisting persons. 9. Neither the leash nor any objects may be left near the dog. The DH must take at least 30 paces, stop, turn and face the dog. The dog must maintain the down stay position without any pressure from the DH, while another dog DH team goes through phases 1-8. During phase 5 the DH of the dog in the down stay position must join the slow moving group and upon completion of phase 5, the DH must return to his previous position. At the judges command, the DH has to return to the right side of his dog. After another command of the TJ the DH and the dog must quickly resume the start-position. The DH is allowed however to request the commands from the TJ. When going from the front-sit-position into the start-position, the dog may either go directly or in a tight circle around the DH. Performance Rules: 1. Off leash heeling 15 Pts Voice signal: „Fuss“ („Heel“) Voice signals may be given at the beginning, after each halt and when changing pace. From the start-position the dog must be attentive, heel willingly on the left side of the DH and remain oriented directly forward, with its shoulder no further forward than the handlers knee. When the DH stops, the dog must sit quickly without assistance and remain oriented forward. Forging ahead, lagging and straying to the side by the dog as well as stalling by the DH at the turns will be penalised. At least one left-hand turn and one right-hand turn as well as one about turn must be demonstrated at a normal pace. Change of pace from running to a slow pace must be achieved abruptly with no steps being taken at the normal pace. Halting must be demonstrated two times at the normal pace. At the end of the exercise the DH and his dog must to move through a slow moving group of people. He must show at least one stop in the group. Two shots (calibre 6 - 9 mm) and motor sounds must be issued as a distraction during the off leash heeling. The dog must be indifferent to the gun shots. Should the dog show any noise shyness or gun shyness, the dog will be disqualified from the test. Should the dog become excited during the shooting this will be considered acceptable as long as the dog remains under the control of its DH. Only a dog who reacts indifferently to all forms of noise can be awarded full points. Aggressive and overly shy dogs may not be assessed. 2. Sit exercise 5 Pts Voice signal: „Fuss, Sitz“ („Heel, Sit“) From the start-position the DH walks in a straight line with his dog heeling off leash. After at least 10 - 15 paces the dog must sit quickly on a vocal or hand signal, while the DH continues walking without slowing down or looking back. After proceeding in a straight line for 30 more paces the DH turns and faces the dog. Upon a command from the TJ the DH returns to the dog and resumes the start-position. 3. Down stay with recall 5 Pts Voice signal: „Fuss, Platz, Hier, Fuss“ („Heel, Down, Here, Heel“) From the start-position the DH walks in a straight line with his dog heeling off leash. After at least 10 - 15 paces the dog must lay down quickly on a vocal or hand command, while the DH continues walking without slowing down or looking back. After proceeding in a straight line for 30 more paces the DH turns and faces his dog, who must be lying calmly. Upon a command from the TJ the DH recalls the dog with a vocal or hand signal. The dog must approach the DH swiftly and enthusiastically and sit immediately in front of his DH. On a vocal or hand signal the dog must resume the start-position.

The voice signal „Bring“ is not allowed to be given until the article has landed and comes to a complete stop. The dog is in the start-position. Upon a vocal or hand signal the dog must run to the object, swiftly retrieve it and return, at the same pace, to sit immediately in front of the DH. The dog must retain the object until the DH gives a vocal signal and accepts it. Upon a vocal or hand signal the dog must return to the start-position. The DH is not allowed to move until the exercise has reached completion. 6. After approximately 10 - 15 paces the DH must remain standing and give the voice signal and may simultaneously give a single hand signal. The dog must run approx. 40 paces in a straight line in the indicated direction. On the voice signal the dog must assume the down position without delay. Upon a command from the TJ, the DH must return to the dog and stand on its right side and bring the dog into the start-position by using voice or hand signal. 7. Lying down while distracted 10 Pts Voice signal: „Platz, Sitz“ („Down, Sit“) Prior to the start of another dog’s or more other dogs work, the DH places his dog in a „down stay position“ (voice signal) indicated by the TJ. Neither the leash nor any objects are allowed to be left near the dog. The DH than takes at least 40 paces, stops, turns and faces the dog. The dog must maintain the down stay position without any pressure from the DH, while another dog DH team goes through phases 1-5. During phase 1 the DH of the dog in the down stay position joins the slow moving group and upon completion of phase 1, the DH returns to his previous position. On the TJ’s command the DH returns to the right side of his dog. After another command of the TJ the DH and the dog must resume quickly the start-position. This exercise is concluded when the TJ announces the score.

Wind direction must be taken into consideration. Following the handlers directions, the dog must zigzag the area searching for the scent. The Intensity of Working and Directability of the dog will be assessed. The DH is not allowed to leave the starting point until the TJ gives permission to do so. The victims have to remain motionless in a sitting or prone position. Victims do not have to be visible or physically accessible. After each search the location of the victim must be changed. The dog must clearly indicate the victims location and the DH must signal, that his dog has made a find and is only allowed to proceed to the dog after a command from the TJ. If the find is indicated by barking, the dog must remain close to the victim, not straying more than proximity 2 m. The properties and type of terrain have to be taken into account. In the case of a dog using a Bringsel for indication or in case of recall, the find will be recognised only when the dog has led its DH by the most direct route to the victim. The first false alert will lower the total score of scent work with 30%. The second false alert is followed by discontinuation of scent work This exercise is concluded when the TJ announces the score. Part B - OBEDIENCE page 10 Part C - DEXTERITY page 14
