8 MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY

With its world-class education system, Australia is the third most popular destination for international students in the world, with more than 2.5 million of our international alumni making an impact on the world.

Although it has a relatively small population of 23.4 million, Australia is known for innovation. The country has produced 15 Nobel laureates and millions of people around the world rely on Australian discoveries like ultrasound and the cervical cancer vaccine. The bionic ear, a revolutionary Australian invention, is produced by Cochlear Ltd, which has its headquarters right on the Macquarie University campus.

Quality of lifeFrom the coral gardens of the Great Barrier Reef to the red desert heart of the continent, Australia’s natural wonders attract thousands of tourists each year. While you may associate Australia with its koalas and kangaroos, most people live in thriving, modern cities along the east coast and enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world.

Australia is a dynamic country with a stable democratic government. For students it offers outstanding education in a secure environment with a relatively low crime rate and high standards of health care.

First inhabited by Indigenous people around 40,000 years ago, Australia has attracted immigrants from more than 200 countries. Wherever you come from, you are likely to find people from your country who have made their home ‘Down Under’.

Benefit from a streamlined visaMacquarie University participates in the Australian Government’s streamlined student visa processing system, available to only the highest quality education providers. This means students studying at Macquarie will generally have to produce fewer documents when applying for a visa, and can generally expect their visa processing times to be greatly reduced.

Legal protection for international studentsThe Education Services for Overseas Students’ (ESOS) legal framework protects the interests of international students coming to Australia on a student visa. It sets out standards, provides clear guidance on roles and responsibilities for all education institutions and offers tuition protection for international students. aei.gov.au/regulatory-information/pages/regulatoryinformation.aspx

People and Planet unitsPeople and Planet units are included in most undergraduate programs. You will learn about contemporary world issues and develop the capacity to become an engaged and ethical citizen.

People units offer a range of cultural and socially focused subjects that help you explore everything from dance and linguistics to philosophy. Planet units relate to the natural world and include units on sustainability, law, bioethics and astronomy.

This multidisciplinary approach to learning makes you more employable. Over 90 per cent of our graduates start their careers within six months of graduation.

Global Leadership ProgramOur Global Leadership Program (GLP) can be undertaken alongside any degree. This extracurricular program enhances your study experience, develops your leadership and professional skills, and cross-cultural understanding.

On successful completion of the program you will receive a notation on your official Macquarie University transcript as well as reference letters, a certificate and a GLP-specific transcript. This adds practical skills and experience to your curriculum vitae.

Undergraduates can gain experiential credit for the program by:

• going on a student exchange

• doing an internship

• participating in an international event

• going on a PACE international volunteer experience.

Postgraduates attend think tanks on thought-provoking topics and choose a cross-cultural practicum, which might involve attending a GLP international symposium, volunteering or attending a conference.

To meet the GLP requirements, all students are also required to attend the annual distinguished speaker series.

The program is generously funded by the University, so most events are free. However, you may incur costs depending on which activity you choose to undertake for your undergraduate experiential credit or postgraduate cross-cultural practicum.Around 2500 students were involved in this program in 2013.

Further your international experience

PACE InternationalAn integral part of PACE and run in partnership with Australian Volunteers International (AVI), PACE International offers you a unique opportunity to do project work with community partners around the world. PACE grants are available to help you finance your experience.

Generally, you are placed with a non-government organisation (NGO) in a developing country to work with local partners doing things such as education, constructing classrooms, promoting health, advocacy, media or communications.

For example, around 50 students have travelled to Manila to work with children’s rights organisation Bahay Tuluyan. Last year a dozen law students were selected to travel to Cambodia to work with partner organisations dealing with issues such as land rights.

Jointly supervised PhD programs Macquarie participates in two modes of international co-enrolment – cotutelles and joint degrees – with leading research universities in Asia, Europe, the United Kingdom, United States and South America.

Cotutelle A cotutelle arrangement allows you to enrol simultaneously for a PhD at Macquarie and one of our partner universities. You submit one thesis to both institutions for joint recognition, for which you may be awarded two testamurs: one from Macquarie University and the other from the partner institution.

Joint degree A joint degree allows you to undertake research at Macquarie and one of our partner universities. Under this arrangement you will undertake a single joint thesis examination and be awarded a single testamur bearing the crests of both universities.

Partner universitiesThe University has had joint doctoral supervision agreements with 108 universities in 29 countries. We are proud to have high priority current research training partnerships with universities in China, Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and the UK. hdr.mq.edu.au/information_for/cotutelle_and_joint_phd_programs

54 MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY

How much will your investment cost?

Tuition feesTuition fees for international students at Macquarie University are set on a per credit-point basis, with your credit point fee depending on the degree or program in which you are enrolled. So students can calculate their likely tuition fees, Macquarie publishes an estimated annual fee for each program based on a full-time study load – usually 16 credit points per academic session or 32 points per year. See the course tables starting on page 36 or view our online course guide for tuition fees.

In most cases, you need to pay the commencement fee, which covers your first academic session, at the time you accept your offer of study. Tuition fees for subsequent academic sessions should be paid by the due date in each session.

We review and may increase our per-credit point fees each year. It is important to realise that you need to pay the fee for your academic year. You may also be subject to other fees and charges.

Cost of living Your cost of living and studying in Australia will depend on the lifestyle you choose to lead. The information below will help you get an idea of how much you need to budget for expenses.

FAQsHow can I find out what I’ll study in my Macquarie degree?Head online to courses.mq.edu.au The “What you will study” tab on each degree page will show you all the required units (subjects) you will need to complete, as well as any elective units you can choose from.

Can I speak to a current student or academic staff member?Head to our international students Facebook page – facebook.com/mqintl – to connect with current students or ask questions about Macquarie or life in Sydney. You can also submit a question to our dedicated team of student recruitment assistants. These are current Macquarie international students trained to give you first-hand advice and assistance.

What if I do not meet the entry requirements?Find out more about our Foundation Program pathways at foundationstudies.mq.edu.au. If you need additional English study before entering a Macquarie program, you can request a packaged Offer of Study. Packaged offers include an English language program at Macquarie University English Language Centre. Once you successfully complete this English program, you can start your Macquarie degree study without the need to sit a further IELTS test.

Can I get credit for my previous studies? If you have studied at another tertiary institution, you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning. This will be awarded in the form of credit points towards your Macquarie program. To request recognition of prior learning or a credit transfer from another institution, you will need to provide documentary evidence of previous study when you apply.

How do I apply if I am completing high school in Australia or New Zealand? If you are currently completing Australian Year 12, the International Baccalaureate in Australia or the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3, you should apply to Macquarie University through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC)

Are there special rules for students under 18?If you will be under 18 when you start your study at Macquarie, you will need to have appropriate accommodation, support and general welfare arrangements in place before the Australian Government can grant you a student visa. Care and accommodation can be provided by a parent, a suitable nominated relative or the University (represented by Macquarie International).

When should I apply?Remember that places are limited in all programs, especially popular degrees. It is a good idea to apply at least two to three months before your first session begins, in order to avoid disappointment and to give you enough time to organise your student visa.
