Taxes
SISS will begin offering OPT workshops every month throughout the academic year. We will have separate monthly
OPT workshops for our undergraduate and graduate students. All of our OPT workshops will take place in the SISS
Annex. No registra on is required. If you are planning on comple ng your academic program soon, please a end
one of our OPT workshops for an overview of the OPT applica on process. SISS recommends applying for OPT 90
days prior to comple ng your academic program.

A en on students and scholars: Are you gradua ng this year and planning to apply for a job in the US? Would you
like to apply for a green card while con nuing to work with the University? A local immigra on a orney will speak
on several issues which are of the utmost importance for anyone considering H‐1B status in the future, including:
• What are the requirements for H‐1B status?
• How far in advance of the expira on of my current status should I consider H‐1B sponsorship?
• What is the current situa on with H‐1B numbers for undergraduate and graduate students?
• What ques ons should I ask poten al employers about their immigra on policies with regard to H‐1B status and
employing foreign na onals?
• What happens to my status if I am laid off from my job while in H‐1B status?
• How can I obtain permanent residency? What op ons for green cards exist for scholars?

12 UNITS PER QUARTER
As a F‐1 or J‐1 interna onal student you are required to register in at least 12 units every fall, winter and spring
quarters. You may be eligible for excep on to full‐ me enrollment under special circumstances, but you need to
check with your SISS Interna onal Student Advisor prior to dropping below 12 units. The last day to add courses is
on the 12th day of instruc on which is April 16, 2013.
UPDATING YOUR ADDRESS
U.S. immigra on regula ons require that students in F‐1 or J‐1 status no fy SISS of any change of address within 10
days. This should be done through SISWEB. You can update the SEVIS‐USA address field in SISWEB by following the
instruc ons at h p://siss.ucdavis.edu/address_students.cfm. Please remember to report a change of address as
soon as they occur.
Is your I‐20 or DS‐2019 going to expire within the next 60 days? If it is going to expire within the next 60 days, now
is the me to extend it. You should request an extension of your I‐20 or DS‐2019 in order to complete your program
of study, provided that the delay in comple on is caused by compelling academic or medical reasons.
Please check the program end date of your current I‐20 (see #5 on page 1) or DS‐2019 (see #3) to see when your
I‐20/DS‐2019 will expire. SISS can only process the extension before your I‐20 or DS‐2019 expires. Please complete
the Con nuing Student I‐20/DS‐2019 Request Form, which you can download from this link: h p://
siss.ucdavis.edu/forms.cfm. Your major professor or academic advisor will need to complete Sec on C on your
Con nuing Student I‐20/DS‐2019 Request Form to verify your new program end date. Please a ach proof of
financial support for the dura on of your extension that has been calculated by your Interna onal Student Advisor
at SISS.

Spring 2013 EDU 98: Connec ng to Community & Career.
EDU 98 will help you to understand how to make connec ons with American communi es and careers and to find UC Davis resources for community involvement, career explora on, and networking ; this course may be repeated for credit and is appropriate for any undergraduate interna onal student.

Who Must Who Must File a Tax Return?
All non‐immigrant interna onal students and scholars who were present in the
U.S. during any part of the calendar year 2012 are responsible for filing a
tax report to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by Tuesday, April 15, 2013.
SISS staff does NOT have the required exper se to assist with filing taxes. Many
Americans pay for an accountant or use computer‐based tax programs.
