1 An Established Private Healthcare UniversityIMU is Malaysia’s first and most established private medical and health sciences university with over 22 years of dedicated focus in

healthcare education. In 2013, the University’s Village Adoption Project at Kampung Tekir, Malaysia won First Place in the MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship, beating 65 other universities from all over the world. In the same year, its School of Medicine was conferred the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) ASPIRE for Excellence Award in the area of “Student Engagement” at the AMEE conference in Prague, Czech Republic.

2 A Specialist University with 100% Focus on Medicine and Health SciencesIMU is a university wholly specialising in medicine, health sciences and complementary medicine programmes which means that all

resources are devoted to excellence in this area of education. Comprising of five schools in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, the IMU has something to offer everyone interested in pre-university, undergraduate, postgraduate and continuous learning programmes in the field of healthcare. International students can choose from this range of programmes and study options, to study the entire degree in Malaysia or to study part of the degree in IMU and then transfer to one of IMU’s Partner Universities.

3 Integrating Education with Research and Healthcare Practice IMU is also pioneering the close integration of Research and Healthcare practice together with Education. International students

get early exposure to research projects by interacting with the established IMU Institute for Research, Development and Innovation (IRDI) throughout their degree. Over the years IMU has also established partnerships with leading hospitals in the country to allow its staff and students to get continuous and extensive real-life clinical experience. It also operates its own private clinics, IMU Healthcare, in areas such as Dentistry, Chiropractic and Chinese Medicine to ensure close integration of real practice with education.

4 Partner to the World’s Prestigious UniversitiesIMU pioneered the partner university model. It has established a strong global network of more than 30 partner institutions of

higher learning. These collaborations cover most of the undergraduate programmes offered in IMU. IMU’s diverse partner universities include universities from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States of America, Ireland, China and United Kingdom. With these partners, international students can be assured that they will receive an education that are of international standards and recognition.

5 Renowned and Highly Experienced FacultyIMU’s lecturers are highly-qualified in their fields of expertise with extensive experience in not only academia (teaching, research

and publications) but also in clinical/professional practice. Through exclusive arrangements with our Partner Universities, senior faculty members from those universities participate in yearly quality assurance reviews which ensures that IMU’s benchmarks global standards. Some also come as visiting lecturers to teach specialised subjects on a rotational basis at IMU. International students can benefit from having a variety of faculty members with diverse points of view and student engagement experiences.

6 IMU Learning Philosophy Produces Competent and Caring Healthcare ProfessionalsIMU’s Learning Philosophy is grounded on its core values, which fosters students’ development into knowledgeable, competent

and caring healthcare professionals who are critical thinkers, reflective and yet proactive. The IMU Cares programme provides ample opportunities for IMU students and staff to engage and serve the community. Active involvement in the community allow students to translate knowledge gained in classrooms into health education to the public, enhance communication skills and strengthen professional and technical skills in real world environments. All this combines to create graduates who are committed to lifelong learning and imbued with a sense of good citizenship, leadership and ethical behaviour. These qualities will equip international students with the qualifications to succeed in a competitive environment anywhere in the world.

7 Employment Ready Graduates with a Professional Network of PeersAt IMU students will have relevant clinical exposure and / or industrial placements which better prepares them to become a

healthcare professional, giving them an advantage in the employment market. In addition students will study alongside a diverse population of students and practitioners from all healthcare fields. School of MedicineA career in medicine can be physically, intellectually and emotionally challenging, but as rewarding. At the IMU School of Medicine you will be instilled with attributes that are important in the making of a doctor: dedication, compassion and lifelong learning. This is how the School of Medicine prepares future doctors for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in patient care, service and research.

To date, the School has the highest number of faculty members, students and successful graduates compared to any other private medical schools in Malaysia. The School continues its tradition of excellence with a diverse student body, experienced and committed faculty as well as excellent facilities for education and research, and good access to patients in primary to tertiary care facilities. Whether teaching, doing research, or providing services to the community, our faculty are united in their efforts to train outstanding clinicians, scientists, and community health workers.

“Being an international student at IMU has been both a benediction and a challenge so far. However the challenges I have faced as a medical student has infinitely increased my strength in character. Apart from the fantastic lectures and excellent facilities provided at the Clinical Skill and Simulation Centre, my most educative and enjoyable moments have been encompassed around the Problem-based Learning sessions in IMU. It has offered me a sense of community and collegiality, which is one of the core value’s emphasised in the University. It goes without saying it has made some of the most academically challenging times of my life ridiculously fun!”

Sadhamini Weeraratna KenyaMedical Student

“I’m proud of coming to IMU. It has just not shaped me up to a more responsible person, but it has given me the opportunity to be around a friendly interactive environment and has taught me to gauge my accomplishments by the number of hearts I have touched!” Mahfuja Islam South Africa Medical Student

The School presents a dynamic curriculum that provides excellent clinical training with exposure to the various dental specialties, integrates the health sciences with clinical experience and utilises modern technology.

The School of Dentistry is distinguished for its preparation of graduates to achieve excellence in the profession and demonstrate an extraordinary compassion and commitment to the service of others. The School’s reputation flourishes because it attracts and retains talented faculty members dedicated to teaching, clinical practice, ethics, service and research.

“The dental programme at IMU offers students a strong practical appproach and wide community outreach. I visited villages, interacted with local people and tried to overcome language barriers which itself was probably the most fantastic experience I had.IMU has taught me how to manage patients holistically rather than focusing on one aspect of dentistry and I am confident that I can serve the community to my best capability.”

Both of these fields of study are in demand and our graduates successfully transition into careers within the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. Our faculty, students and alumni remain passionate about enhancing the quality and scope of the profession through serving those most in need.

Social Life

Dependant on your choice of lifestyle, lavish or average.

Money Matters

Undertaking university study will significantly change your pattern of expenditure from before you start university. Planning your finances (budgeting) becomes even more important, especially as you will live and study in Kuala Lumpur for a number of years. Kuala Lumpur is the financial capital of Malaysia and is more expensive to live in than other cities, although living costs in the Bukit Jalil area are lower than in the city centre.

Apart from university tuition fees you need to plan for expenditure on food, accommodation, transport, mobile device connectivity and leisure. These costs will depend on where you choose to live, your interests and lifestyle, but estimated total monthly expenses range from RM2,000 to RM3,000.

To help you plan your budget, the following guide would serve as a brief estimate of some essential expenditures while you are in Malaysia:

Accommodation

Monthly hostel rental range between RM500 – RM2,200 and private (condominium) rental between RM500 and RM1,200. Rentals vary according to location, room type and whether shared or single; amenities are provided.

Food

RM500 – RM700 monthly. The amount depends on how expensive your tastes are. When dining in the cafeteria on-campus, each meal should not cost you more than RM10.

Travel

RM100 – RM200 monthly (using public transportation). It may be much higher if you travel by taxi.

Other expenses

RM400 and upwards. These include toiletries and laundry; mobile phone and internet charges; stationery, social activity.

About Malaysia

Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy with thirteen states and a population of 28 million. Malay (Bahasa Malaysia) is the official language and Islam is the official religion. But English, Indian languages, Mandarin and Chinese dialects are widely spoken, as are languages of peoples indigenous to Borneo, which has unique

ethnic communities of the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. Nowhere is there such an exciting diversity of cultures with their festivals, beliefs, customs and traditions.

With such varying ethnic composition, it is no surprise that a great diversity of religions is prevalent throughout

Malaysia. The Malaysian currency is “RM” which stands for “Ringgit Malaysia”. The electricity voltage in Malaysia is 220-240 volts.

Malaysia comprises two land masses in South East Asia – the Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, which is the northern half of the island of Borneo.

The Peninsula lies just above the equator, so Malaysia enjoys warm, sunny and humid equatorial weather all year round, with some months wetter than others.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s biggest and most populous city, is the capital city of Malaysia and a modern cosmopolitan of ethnical diversity. It is situated midway along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Amidst its fast paced life and modernity, Kuala Lumpur is a cultural melting pot, radiating an exciting and enticing charm with its delightful mix of cross-cultural influences, traditions,

varied cuisine, first class attractions, entertainment and shopping facilities. All in all, to leave you in awe. Popularly known as KL, this city has become host to many international sporting, political and cultural events including the annual Formula One Grand Prix since the 1990s. The transportation system in this city is a cooperation of complex systems of infrastructure. KL has an unrivaled transportation system in

Malaysia, including an integrated rail network, and an automated driverless metro system, extending its network right into the heart of the city.

For more information on Malaysia and Kuala Lumpur, visit:

Kuala Lumpur

Bukit JalilThe University is nestled in a small suburb, Bukit Jalil, about 20 km south of the city of Kuala Lumpur, away from the hustle and bustle of hurried life. Fortunately Bukit Jalil is easily accessible as it is conveniently located within a 5-minute walking distance to the Sri Petaling Light Rail Transit (LRT) station, which connects to the rest of the transportation networks around the city. As well as everything on campus, the University is also right next door to Bukit Komanwel, a hilly reserve park serving

as a great space to refresh, recharge and unwind. In addition, the campus is situated near the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil, allowing students to gain access to world-class sports facilities for swimming, football, hockey, squash and a host of other sporting activities. The stadiums are also the main venues for a variety of events, including sporting events and concerts for various

top local and international singers.

In Bukit Jalil, students have all the advantages of a modern city life and yet they are also a part of a sociable and relatively safe student environment. As a venue of the 1998 Commonwealth Games, Bukit Jalil is about 50km or a half an hour drive from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
