proud history stretching back over 145 years.

ATMC has two Federation University, Australia

teaching locations; one located in the city of

Melbourne and one in Sydney.

STUDENT MENTORSWe at ATMC recognise that students might

need additional help with their academic and

we assign mentors to each of our students.

This service is available to all ATMC students,

free of charge, whereby they are able to work

with high-performing, more senior students,

who act as their mentors. These mentors,

students with specialised knowledge who

have excelled academically, are employed to

assist students, either individually or in small

study groups.

ATMC CAREERS ASSISTANCEAt ATMC we provide specialist career

services, including career coaching that is

delivered by a qualifi ed Careers Counsellor.

These services are free to all enrolled ATMC

students and include a Program on Strategic

Career Management that is exclusive to

ATMC. The program includes workshops that

can assist with identifying career

opportunities, resume development and

preparing for interviews. Additional Career

Assist sessions are designed to help ATMC

students to maximise their employability

outcomes. Sessions are scheduled regularly

throughout each of the three Semesters.

EXTENSIVE ORIENTATION WEEKWe understand that the international student

needs a lot of support to settle into a new

country. We have designed a very extensive

orientation program which covers support on

accommodation, opening bank accounts,

understanding health cover, resume building,

placement assistance etc.

FAST TRACK THREE SEMESTER OPTIONAt ATMC, you have the option to do three

semesters in one year to fast-track your studies.

For example this enables you to complete a

three year degree one year earlier than

students studying in a conventional

two-semester system.

IELTS PREPARATION CLASSESTime tabled classes are scheduled to provide

students the opportunity to practice sample

test questions and activities under test

conditions in the four macro skill areas of

Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Preparation classes are available for both the

Academic module of the IELTS test and the

General Training Module of the IELTS test

GENERAL LANGUAGE SUPPORT CLASSESATMC provides scheduled General Language

Support for all students seeking to improve

and enhance specifi c or general language

skills in the four macro skill areas for Listening,

Reading, Writing and Speaking.

BEFORE YOU LEAVEOnce your Confi rmation of Enrolment comes

through and you have secured your student

visa, it’s time to start thinking of some of the

practicalities of travelling to Australia.

PACKINGIt’s worth packing a few mementos from home

that will give you some comfort when you’re

missing your friends and family, but keep in

mind that most airlines have a checked baggage

restriction of about 20kg (about 44lb).

The type of clothing you should bring with you

depends on the part of the country you will be

living in, and the time of year you arrive. The

Australian summer coincides with the fi rst

academic semester in February, which is when

most international students arrive. This means

that you can probably get by with jeans, t-shirts

and light jackets. If you arrive in time for the

second academic semester around July, you’ll

need to pack some warm jumpers or

sweaters, long-sleeved t-shirts and a coat to

cope with winter weather. However,

Australian winters are mild in comparison to

the icy weather you’d encounter in the

Northern Hemisphere. Check out

www.bom.gov.au for the latest weather

information around Australia.

INSURANCEChances are pretty good that your trip will go

smoothly and you won’t encounter any

problems. Even so, you should plan for the

unexpected. Cancelled fl ights, lost luggage

and wallets can end up costing you a lot of

time and money, so take out travel insurance

before you leave. It won’t guard against bad

things happening, but it will protect you

against having to cover unexpected costs.

All student visa holders entering Australia must

have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

for the duration of their stay. OSHC will help

you pay for any visits to the doctor you may

have while in Australia. Go to the Overseas

Student Health Cover page for information on

what your OSHC will cover.

MONEYYou should bring enough Australian currency

in cash for your fi rst few days, without carrying

large amounts of cash on you. You should also

have easy access to about AU$1,500 – 3,000

in travellers’ cheques (in your name) so that

you can start establishing yourself and setting

up your new home quickly.

Note that if you are carrying more that

AU$10,000, or equivalent currency, you must

declare it to Customs offi cials when you enter

Australia.

OVERSEAS STUDENT HEALTH COVERAustralia has a special system of health cover

for international students called Overseas

Student Health Cover (OSHC). You will need

to buy OSHC before you come to Australia to

cover you from when you arrive. The

Department of Immigration and Border

Protection requires you to maintain OSHC for

the duration of your time on a student visa in

Australia.

ATMC has an agreement with a specifi c OSHC

provider Allianz Global Assistance. You can

choose to take out OSHC with this provider, or

with the Australian OSHC provider of your

choice. For detailed information, please visit;

Student SupportSHORT-TERM ACCOMMODATIONIt’s a good idea to try to organise a permanent

place to live before you arrive in Australia.

However, you may decide to wait until you

arrive to get an idea of distances between your

campus and surrounding suburbs, or to

inspect private rental accommodation.

ARRIVING IN AUSTRALIAAt some stage during your fl ight to Australia

you will be handed an Incoming Passenger

Card to fi ll in. Answer the questions accurately

and truthfully, especially those about the items

in your luggage that you may have to declare

to Customs offi cials.

If you are unsure of where to go or what to do

when you disembark from your fl ight in

Australia, ask an offi cial for help. They will

guide you.

CLEARING IMMIGRATION & CUSTOMS CHECKPOINTSOnce you land, you will follow the signs to an

Immigration checkpoint.

Here, you will need to show your passport,

visa and Incoming Passenger Card. You may

also have to show your Confi rmation of

Enrolment.

Once you have cleared this checkpoint you

will enter the baggage hall where you can

claim your luggage and proceed to Customs

and baggage examination.

COUNSELLING SERVICEATMC has a designated Student Support

Offi cer to provide a basic counselling service

to all students. This service provides assistance

to students experiencing diffi culties in any

aspect of their lives, including issues of

academic or personal nature. ATMC can also

refer students to external counselling service

for various issues if necessary however each

issue is dealt with on a case by case basis.

HEALTH SERVICESDetails about the Health Services and

Hospitals in the local area are provided during

the Orientation Period. You will need to buy

OSHC before you come to Australia to cover

you from when you arrive.

Your OSHC will help you pay for any medical

or hospital care you may need while you’re

studying in Australia, and it will contribute

towards the cost of most prescription

medicines, and an ambulance in an

emergency (only).

AIRPORT PICKUPAirport pick up service is available to

international students upon request (charges

apply, see fees and charges). Students will be

met at the Arrivals hall and taken to their

accommodation. For further details please

contact us.

Trading have information on your rights and

responsibilities when renting a house or

apartment in Victoria and NSW respectively.

LEAVING THE AIRPORTOnce you have cleared all incoming

passenger checkpoints, you will be

welcomed to Australia and directed to the

arrivals hall. If you need to exchange some

money into Australian dollars you will fi nd

Currency Exchange booths throughout the

airport.

If you have arranged for friends or relatives to

meet you, they will be waiting for you in the

arrivals hall.

Public transport is available at all international

airports and most regional airports. You can

generally expect that a taxi service will be

available, and you may also fi nd buses and

trains.

If you are transferring to a domestic fl ight,

follow the signs to the domestic terminal. At

some of the larger airports this may be some

distance, so look out for intra-airport terminal

shuttle services to get you there faster.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ASSISTANCEThe current English requirement for ATMC

students is an overall IELTS score of 6.0 with no

individual band score less than 6.0 or

equivalent. English language assistance is

available to provide ongoing English and

study skills support to international students.

Student SupportSUPPORT SERVICESAt ATMC we are dedicated to providing all our

students with the very best support services,

so that they have a successful academic and

personal experience. In addition to the normal

support services, international students are

provided with a range of specialist services

such as assistance with resume-writing and

looking for part-time work. Students have

access to welfare-related support services to

assist with issues that may arise during their

study, including program progress,

attendance requirements and

accommodation. These services are made

available to all ATMC students.

The Student Support Offi cer is responsible for

the orientation and on-going welfare of all

international students and can be contacted

The Student Support Offi cer launches the

student on their educational journey from

orientation to organizing social activities and

excursions. The Student Support Offi cer has

access to a range of resources and services

that the student may wish to access including

health/legal services, study facilities/

resources and welfare support. ATMC can

also refer students to external counselling.

The Academic Support Offi cer, teaching staff

and administrative staff at ATMC are also

available to provide general advice and

assistance with matter such as studying and

issues regarding student administration.

We pride ourselves on providing international

students with the highest level of support

possible. So please don’t be afraid to ask!

COST OF LIVINGAustralia off ers a unique experience for

students. Apart from a world-class education

system, the opportunities to get involved in

daily life are endless: whether you’re into the

arts or sport, partying or book clubs, the great

outdoors or cosy cafés, you’ll fi nd many ways

to join in and have fun. So if you want to get an

education and have a life, it really is the place

Australian Education International (AEI),

suggest $18,000 per year accurately refl ects

the real costs of living in Australia This is

exclusive of tuition fees and lifestyle expenses

but covers accommodation, food, public

transport clothing, entertainment, books,

stationery and incidental expenses. However,

international students are encouraged to

undertake their own research into the cost of

living in Australia, taking into consideration

their own circumstances before making a

SYDNEYSydney is Australia’s largest and most famous

city. It’s home to beautiful beaches, iconic

buildings, historic landmarks, award winning

restaurants and a vibrant culture. From the

breathtaking views of Sydney Harbour to the

serene tranquillity of Hyde Park, Sydney has

something for everyone.

STUDENT VISA CONDITIONS Noncompliance

Your visa conditions are set out in the letter of

approval you receive with your visa or on your

visa label. It is important that you are familiar

with these conditions and follow them. Every

year, a number of students abuse the law by,

for example, working longer hours than

permitted by their visa or overstaying their visa.

If you break your conditions, your visa may be

cancelled and you may be required to leave

Australia. You may also be prevented from

returning to Australia for three years aft er your

visa is cancelled.

If your circumstances change and you want to

change your program or provider, or you wish

to stay longer, you should contact your nearest

DIBP offi ce for advice on how to make these

arrangements. It is also important that you

ensure your visa does not expire while you are

in Australia. If you remain in Australia for more

than 28 days aft er your student visa expires

without obtaining a new one, you may be

prevented from returning for three years.

Extending your Visa

If your student visa expires before you have

fi nished your program of study, you will need

to apply for a new one at your local

immigration offi ce OR at the visa section at the

Australian Mission or Embassy in your home

country. Further information is available on the

LEARNING SUPPORT SERVICESYour source of learning support for course

content will always be your lecturers and

tutors, but you can seek general academic

skills support from a Student Adviser or

Student Support Offi cer at your campus.

LEARNING CONTEXTSYour lecture will generally contain the core

information to be covered for that week. All

students enrolled in the course will attend

lectures as a group. The tutorial provides an

opportunity to discuss the lecture and talk

about topics in detail. Sometimes students are

asked to present papers individually or as part

of a group in a tutorial.

Laboratory Sessions (Labs or Pracs) are

practical classes, where students conduct

tests and experiments with the assistance and

supervision of lecturers or tutors.

Self Directed Study is a student’s personal

program of study which fi ts around the

‘contact hours’ of lectures, tutorials and labs.

This personal program includes reading,

research, writing up lecture notes, writing

essays and reports, discussion with other

students and lecturers, studying for exams,

etc. A well organised and regular study

program is essential for success at ATMC.

Studying in Australia may seem diffi cult at fi rst.

It is natural to take some time to settle into your

studies. If you are having diffi culties, discuss

this with your lecturer or tutor. Your lecturer or

tutor is available to assist you if you are not sure

what is required.

You may email your lecturer or tutor to arrange

with the Student Service Offi cer a the front

desk to organise an appointment.

Protection (DIBP) is the Australian Government

students on scholarships. Make sure you read

scholarship to ensure you comply, or else your

visa may be cancelled and you may be

ACCOMMODATIONFinding the right accommodation is one of the

biggest challenges facing a new international

student, and fi nding a place in your price

range can be even harder. It is extremely

important that you factor the cost of housing

into your budget before you come to Australia,

and have access to funds that will cover rent

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES PROGRAMSAn ongoing social activities program runs

throughout each semester and provides

opportunities for students to enjoy a range of

ORIENTATION PROGRAMA free orientation program is conducted for all

new international students before classes

begin and is compulsory for all newly

commencing international students. The

Program Outline

This program aims to provide students with a good foundation in IT

fundamentals along with the fl exibility to specialise in further IT areas or combine

their studies with fi elds outside of IT.

The Bachelor of Technology consists of 8 core and 4 elective computing

courses. Various major streams consisting of 8 courses and minor streams of 4

courses are proposed. Courses for major and minor areas of study will be

required to be taken at appropriate levels for the program to be AQF compliant.

For example, students would not be able to take more than 8 fi rst year courses

and would need to take at least 6 third year courses. Initially, the major and minor

areas of study will come from the following areas: Information Systems, Soft ware

Engineering, Computer Games, Multimedia, Mathematics, and Statistics. Future

off erings could include majors or minors in Management, Engineering and other

areas that are relevant to particular cohorts. The Bachelor of Technology diff ers

This program aims to provide students a pathway to a research career in IT.

Students without a background in IT can undertake this program and gain both

the background IT knowledge plus the research skills to go on to further

research oriented study.

Upon completions students will have a broad understanding of Information

Technology plus a strong understanding of academic research in the discipline.

This program has a course work component that is comparable to a graduate

diploma in Information Technology that focuses on Soft ware Engineering and

Enterprise Systems Technology. Additionally the course work provides An

exploration of required research skills and methodology training to undertake a

career in research

This program also requires students to undertake an individual academic

research project that is equivalent in size and depth to an Australian Honours

thesis. This project will be carried out by working with a research supervisor.

This project will contribute new knowledge to the chosen fi eld.


This program is primarily aimed at providing a pathway for students to go on to

further study in the form of a PhD. This will allow them to pursue a career in

academia, or as a researcher in industry such as Google, Microsoft , CSIRO or a

University.

Course work within the program will also open up possibilities in industry

depending on the courses they select. Selections made primarily from the

WHAT IS WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING?

Work integrated learning (WIL) is an umbrella term for a range of approaches and strategies that integrate theory with the practice of work within a purposefully designed curriculum.1 WIL is intended:

To improve the work-readiness of university graduates and create the opportunities for them to develop and apply their skills and knowledge for enhanced ability in the workplace;

To enable employers to better utilise the skills and capabilities of their workforce;

To enable a work environment in which entrepreneurship and innovation can flourish;

To strengthen the partnerships between academia and industry in the advancement of Australian

How ATMC Helps

ATMC has set up an enterprise, which is wholly owned by the college. The enterprise designs real-life IT and IS projects for its final year students,

which are mapped to the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA). The students work on digital projects in one or more of five areas of the

business: sales and marketing; project management; software development; software testing and systems administration. Through this

arrangement ATMC offers various opportunities to current students to help them gain experience of operating within a real business environment,

and develop the real life skills and experiences that are valued by employers.

WIL ProgramCURRENT PROJECTS/WORKSHOPS

The Power of AttractionOn Saturday 6th June, 20 students braved an early start on a cold

Melbourne morning to attend an internship preparation workshop

conducted by Colin Wilson, Director of KBA and a renowned career

coach.

The tone was set in the fi rst few minutes of the workshop “My job is to

make you street smart, to make you understand the job market and what

skills you need in order to succeed, to identify your power of attraction to

a prospective employer.

Focus, determination, passion and consistence in performance, these

were the attributes the workshop attendees identifi ed as pivotal to

succeeding within their internships and continuing career.

As students left the workshop, their high levels of enthusiasm for what

they had learned were obvious. One student stated, “I was expecting a

boring talk, but what we got was great advice on how to sell ourselves!”

ATMC held another three workshops.

Innovative projects assure work ready ATMC FedUni GraduatesFollowing the exciting announcement in the inaugural ATMC WIL

newsletter of our purchase of a license for an end-to-end management

talent tool, we have begun to map ITECH projects to the Skills Framework

for the Information Age (SFIA), the appropriate AQF level and individual

student capabilities!

In order to begin our trail blazing initiative whereby FedUni ATMC

graduates can demonstrate their work readiness through the completion

of real life projects, I have been working with both onshore and off shore

IT companies to identify projects for those students who are nearing the

end of their undergraduate or postgraduate IT/IS studies.

Two-hour workshops were conducted at three ATMC FedUni campuses

to better prepare both undergraduate and postgraduate students in their

understanding of expectations for the provision of tender bids at the

beginning of the July semester for project allocation.

Prior to Semester 2 students were asked to self-identify their key IT and

business capabilities, which were then logged against a host of projects

mapped against the skill sets contained within the newest version of SFIA

(version 6), thus ensuring competitive advantage for these potential

graduates as they seek job opportunities post-graduation.

DIGITAL SKILLSDigital skills are essential for an ever increasing range of industries,

occupations and employers. There is a shortage of digital skills – the size

of the digital skills gap is unprecedented and it is growing. Employers are

looking for students who are productive, have evidence of transferable

skills and work based experience.

THE MAJORITY OF STUDENTS ARE ALSO UNCERTAIN ABOUT THEIR CHOICE OF COURSE AND HOW IT WILL HELP FUTURE EMPLOYMENT AND CAREER CHOICE On the other hand students (and their parents) can fi nd

the prospect of fi nding a job and choosing a career quite

frightening and intimidating. They ask questions like:

• What is work really like, how do I know I will like it?

• What if I invest in further education and can’t find a job or career I

like or I can be successful in?

• How do I make myself attractive to potential employers?

• What if I choose a career / first job and find out I don’t like it?

• Why do I have to learn all this theory and academic stuff –

what has it got to do with work / finding a job /

developing my career?

• Should I work for a large employer or a SME / micro business?

WORK INTEGRATED LEARNING PROVIDES A SOLUTION TO MANY OF THESE QUESTIONS Work integrated learning helps students:

• Become more attractive to employers

• Understand more about the career opportunities at

SMEs / microbusinesses

• Analyse and develop their personal skills, aptitudes and ambitions

• Develop a number of essential work based skills, which

would not be typically taught in a purely academic course

• Build up work or work-like experiences and learn

how to communicate this to employers

• Positively manage employer expectations to their worth

and competence and the benefits employers get from students

undertaking WIL
