In the late 1990s, Rico was based in the Silicon Valley, applying ground-breaking computer science research from the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University to open problems in finance. This work was performed in close collaboration with top-tier banks in New York at a time when SEC Regulation ATS (and later NMS) levelled the playing field in US equities trading. Leading up to the financial crisis, Rico worked in London and New York, where he was in charge of a multi-billion proprietary trading book at a top US bank. The trading strategies earned millions for the bank without a single down year and achieved their best perfor-mance during the 2008 market dislocation. Rico also traded exotic derivatives for the same institution, sharing responsibility for a complex and highly profitable correlation book. After returning to Switzerland, Rico joined a Swiss bank, where he later advanced to become the deputy head of cross-asset structured products. During his tenure, Rico’s team also managed a sizeable operation in Actively Managed Certificates with equities, bonds, funds, futures and options underlyings. Rico is the founding CEO of vestr AG, a Zug-based fintech startup providing white-labeled business-to-business software solutions to the financial services industry. The company is backed by SIX Ventures and other high-profile investors.
