Dear ISC Community,

Thank you all for your support at our UN Day celebration! Our gymna-

sium was full for the performances and the tents outside had plenty of

food for all to enjoy. The collaboration between parents, staff, and the

student body, made the event a memorable one.

Up next is Friday’s PTA Halloween Carnival. We are expecting another

great event for our young students; within and outside the ISC commu-

nity. If you are ready for some Halloween fun, be sure to stop by the

school Friday evening!

Over the first months of the school year it has been a pleasure getting to

know more of the parents that I normally didn’t see as the high school

principal in past years. However, I believe there is additional room for

me to grow in this area. Having said that, starting Thursday, November

5th and continuing every Thursday thereafter, I will be hosting an open

coffee session with parents in my office from 8:00-8:30. Not only do I

want to get to know you better, but I would also like to share with you

ideas for the school moving forward. At the same time, it should be very

clear that this is not meant to be a session to listen to specific concerns

you may have for your child; those types of concerns still need to be

addressed with the individual teacher and level principal.

Please sign up directly with Camille in the main office to reserve your

spot; my office space is limited to just 5 parents each week. To ensure

that as many families can be represented during each week, I kindly ask

you not to sign both parents up together for the same date. I hope to see

you in my office!

Halloween Cake Walk Dear ISC Parents, As you already know on Friday, October 30th, ISC will host its Annual Halloween Carnival, the biggest P.T.A fundraising event of the year. Our famous Cake Walk is one of the most popular games throughout the evening. Participants walk and have the opportunity to win a cake if their number is drawn. This year we have decided to re-quest for small cakes and/or cupcake donations. In order for this game to be a success we need your contribution; we are requesting small cakes or prepackaged cup-cakes (4 or 6 in disposable containers). Please decorate and/or purchase them with a Halloween theme or colors. Bring your contribution to the gym the morning of Friday, October 30th. Please make sure you use a disposable tray or con-tainer. There will be identified tables for you to place your donations. ISC GIN Rio Conference 2015: Student Reflections

Kyril: I personally believe that our trip to the GIN Con-ference in Rio de Janeiro has greatly benefitted us ISC GIN members, as we have learned of new ways to bet-ter our community. What I think to be the greatest part of the GIN conference we attended is that it acted as a crucial facilitator in the discussion between both stu-dents and professionals regarding how we can create a better future.

Shakira: Being given the opportunity to attend the GIN conference in Rio de Janeiro was absolutely amazing. It was a great opportunity to meet people from around the world who have the same or similar goals. I have come back to Curacao with various ideas on how to make our community a better place and hope to share and implement these ideas around the school campus.

Maaike: I really enjoyed the conference in Rio, and I loved to meet people from all over the world and their ideas and opinions really inspired me. I think the GIN conferences are a great way to stay moti-vated to make this world a better place, and I am very glad I had the chance to attend the GIN confer-ence this year, I learned a lot!

Joelle: The GIN conference in Rio was an incredi-ble experience that left me with ideas for many new projects that I plan to carry out in my own commu-nity. Most importantly, I learned that we must all as-pire to inspire!

Tessa: GIN Rio 2015 was a positive and inspiring experience for me. It opened my eyes to new possi-bilities and it was a motivation to implement new so-lutions to my school.

ISC GIN Rio Conference 2015: Student Reflections

Isabella: This Rio GIN conference was amazing. I have learned so much and have been greatly inspired. It gave me so many ideas that I hope we can conduct on our own island. I am very grateful to have been part of that experience.

Amy: I found the conference in Rio a very inspiring experience, since it connects groups of people that are passionate about helping our global communities grow and developing our world into a better place. It was an honor to learn about the changes these people are willing to make and have performed; I hope that we inspire others to be the change they want to see in the world.

Ming: My experience in Rio was excellent. I loved the ideas other schools had to share. So many pos-sible ideas that inspired me personally. One of them is the school gardening. Also, I got to know some new friends.

Stephanie: I found the GIN conference in Rio ex-tremely beneficial, because if gives us new ideas to work on in the future.

Stefano: I found the GIN conference a very good experience for me. At the conference they inspired us with many different ideas to solve our world prob-lems. I really enjoyed the conference.

Mei Lin: I'm very glad I attended the GIN confer-ence, I feel fortunate to have gone and met amazing people from different parts of the world and have ex-panded my horizons on different projects we could do. The overall conference and trip itself was amaz-ing, we all are very inspired and we have many ideas of how we could do better on Curacao.

* ISC Model United Nations is gearing up for our yearly trip to PANA-

MUN! From October 26th through 31st, twelve ISC students will be attend-

ing the conference in Panama City, Panama. The conference theme: Com-

bating Modern Extremism – has been selected so that participants can de-

velop solutions to the various aspects of this serious problem. Delegates

from ISC are assigned a country to represent and present solutions from

their country’s perspective. Human Rights, Disarmament, Environment,

Crime Prevention and the Commission on Refugees are some of the many

committees in which students may participate. This MUN conference pro-

vides excellent opportunities for students to meet other students from

around the region, build consensus, develop their public speaking skills –

not to mention build their knowledge on the functions of the United Nations

– as well as how diplomacy works. They do this while learning about the

issues that world leaders are struggling to solve. Once the student delegates

submit their proposals (called resolutions), they get to participate in large

debates (from the perspective of their assigned nation) and vote to pass or

fail the resolution. While we are in Panama, we will also take a little time out to admire the skyline of Panama City, boat

on the Panama Canal, see wildlife in its natural habitat, kayak in a canal tributary and even jump off a waterfall!

Introduction of ISC’s Financial Aid Program for School Year 2016-2017

This ISC Board of Directors recently approved a financial aid program for next school year. By the end of this week,

two documents outlining the procedure along with the actual application form, will be available on the school’s website

under the heading “Admissions” and in the sub category “Admissions Forms”. The rationale behind the program, as

outlined in the soon to be posted document Financial Aid Policy Procedure, is as follows:

Help families with genuine financial need;

Avoid students having to leave the school due to drastic changes in the family’s financial circumstances;

Ensure a feasible body of student enrollment that will facilitate good levels of student interaction in the various aca-

demic settings throughout the school;

Improve academic excellence at the school by supporting high achieving students in grade 9 to grade 12, who might

otherwise not be able to continue at the school.

The policy is comprehensive in that the program is meant specifically to help families who meet the listed criteria and

show evidence of true financial need. Once the documents are posted online and you have read them thoroughly, please

contact Mrs. Loraine van Rosberg in the main office if you have any additional questions.

From the Nurse: Halloween Safety

There are many ways to keep your child safe at Halloween, when they are

more prone to accidents and injuries. The excitement of children and

adults at this time of year sometimes makes them forget to be careful.

Simple common sense can do a lot to stop any tragedies from happening.

-Help your child pick out or make a costume that will be safe. The

eye holes should be large enough for good peripheral vision and

make sure costumes aren’t too long where the child is tripping

over the excess fabric.

-If you set jack-o-lanterns outside your home with candles in them,

make sure that they are far enough out of the way so that kids’

costumes won’t accidentally be set on fire.

-Make sure that if your child is carrying a prop, such as a scythe, a knife or a pitchfork, that the tips are smooth and

flexible enough to not cause injury if fallen on.

-Kids always want to help with pumpkin carving. Small children shouldn’t be allowed to use a sharp knife to cut the

top or the face. There are many kits available that come with tiny saws that work better than knives and are safer,

although you can be cut by them as well! It is best to let the kids clean out the pumpkin and draw the design on

it, which you can then carve for them.

-Treating your kids to a spooky Halloween dinner prior to Trick or Treating will make them less likely to eat the

candy they collect before you have had a chance to check it for them.

-Teaching your kids basic everyday safety such as not getting into cars or talking to strangers and looking both ways

before crossing the streets will help make them safer when they are out Trick or Treating

Make Halloween a fun, safe and happy time for your kids and they’ll carry on the tradition that you taught them to their

own families some day!

Kashyapi Joshipura for being selected 1st and 3rd respectively in the island-

1st Place: Beyond the bars of Darkness, by Kashyapi Joshipura (grade 10)

This picture depicts the United Nations theme of “Light and Light-based tech-

nologies”. I specifically chose these themes because it is something that we see

and experience every day. For me, interpretation of this topic means the inven-

tion of all the technologies that have made it possible for humans to go beyond

the horizons. I chose to select this image specifically because I perceive it as

light coming out of the bars. Also, I believe that it is important for all humans

being to have access to basic necessities of life, and in the 21st century technol-

ogy has become a part of it. This picture, shows that with every basic step, light

and light based technologies have slowly started to become a part of every life,

even the simplest thing be it a fan, it counts as a step toward development.

Three things cannot be hidden, the sun (light), the moon, and the truth, by

In this picture I tried to represent the quote mention on the name of this picture:

there are three things that cannot be hidden, the sun (light), the moon, and the

truth.

The representation of life can be seen life through light, as light is present dur-

ing the day and this why light is reflecting upon the spikes of nature.

In the other hand, the moon which represents darkness, is represented in this

picture through the darkness of the plants characteristic, the spikes, which can

be harmful to the being of nature and the dark background.

However, I aim to create a balance in which this picture represents neither dark-

ness nor light, it represents a balance of both forces of the universe. Which fi-

nally has a purpose or showing the truth of life.

In conclusion the main ideas of my picture can be seen in the following aspects

1. light reflected of the spikes (darkness)

2. Spikes themselves - synonym of harmless and danger. (sun)

3. Dark background, upper side: darkness.

4. Clear background, lower side: light( sun)

5. Combination/balance: truth

Hidden Sun, by Sanjana Navani (grade 10)

The International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies aims to raise

awareness of the achievements of light science, its applications, and its impor-

tance to humankind. Light plays a fundamental role in our life, hence the reason

it is important to know what it is. Light seems to fascinate plenty of us. When

we were young, we were often curious about where rainbows came from and

why the sun would set. Light emitted by the sun plays a fundamental role in the

development of light. In my picture you see the sun while it’s setting, emitting

light and some of the light hiding behind the trees. The sun is the primary

source of light and warmth on earth. Light plays a fundamental role in our life

and is barely ever touched upon. It affects all human activities. Light affects fields that you would never expect such as

the economy and communications. Light and light-based technologies are also helping fix global issues and have many

positive impacts on Earth. In my picture you see light that isn’t hiding behind the trees which shows how light always

surrounds us but the light hiding behind the trees shows the little to no attention humans give to the importance of light.

This is why the United Nations decided to let 2015 be the International Year of Light.

Stichting Studiefinanciering Curacao (SSC) will be on campus doing a presentation on Monday, November 2. The

presentation will be taking place at 11am in room 9 on the high school side. This presentation is for 12th grade students

and parents. A representative from SSC will be here to talk about the application procedure and funding options for stu-

dents on this island. If you have a Dutch passport or will be getting your Dutch passport soon, I highly encourage you to

attend this session.

Webster University, Leiden will be visiting us on Tuesday November 10. A

representative from this university will be giving a presentation at 12:30 pm in

room 9. All interested 10-12 grade students and parents are welcome to at-

tend. ISC has one or two students attend this university every year. For more

The Study and Career Fair that happens every year at the WTC will be taking place on November 11 and 12. Ms. Fig

and Mr. Polsbroek will be taking any interested 11th and 12th graders during school on Wednesday November 11. The

time is not yet confirmed. Please note that while there may

be 1 or 2 US universities at this fair the majority of univer-

sities will be from Holland. This is a really great opportu-

nity for anyone interested in studying in Holland. Inter-

ested 11 and 12 grade students should sign up with Ms.

Fig by November 2. More Info:

Hult International Business School will be visiting us on Thursday November 12. A representative from this univer-

sity will be giving a presentation at 11am in room 9. All interested 10-12 grade students and parents are welcome to

attend. Hult International Business School has seven different campuses: Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai, Shang-

hai, New York, and Ashridge Estate in the UK. Students are able to study in multiple campuses depending on their busi-

Career Fair: ISC is looking for professionals in different fields (banking, accountancy, performing arts, engineering,

hospitality, architecture, law, medicine, education, psychology, marketing, entrepreneurship, etc) to volunteer and be part
