The Liszt Academy launched the Bartók World Competition in 2017, having started preparations the year before, on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of the birth of Béla Bartók. Through this, the institution, Bartók’s alma mater, cherishes the heritage of Bartók, since the composer was always – in his heart and his soul – Hungarian.

The series began with the violin category. In 2018 the composers competed, with works written for solo piano. Selected winning pieces are compulsory works for the piano competition in 2019.

In addition, an international musicology conference, a series of panel discussions open to the public, and concerts promoting the music of Bartók, all running simultaneously with the piano competition will turn the series of the events into a major festival.
