Clay and Don were among the original five who worked with Shunta Yamamoto to turn I- House from a dream into a reality. Shuntas daughter, Eleanor, still lives in Davis but was not able to attend the event. The original five at the first board meeting in 1981 were: Shunta Yama- moto, chair; Clay Ballard, president; Arnold Meadow, vice president; Don Ranstrom, secre- tary; Eleanor Yamamoto, treasurer. Later that spring of 1981 other early members included Judy Wydick, Bob and Ray Hagan, Helge Olsen, Dick Dorf and Georgie Kratzer. The first I-House office found a home at Davis Community Church. May 3 – June 21, 2013 Schedule May 3, 2013 Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky (2009, France, Japan, Swit-zerland, directed by Jan Kounen, 120 min.) The early scenes of the film depict the historic Paris debut, 100 years ago this month, of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russ-es that caused an uproar among the public. One appreciative audience member was Coco Chanel (Anna Mouglalis who was introduced to Igor Stravinsky (Mads Mikkelsen) by Sergei Diaghilev (Grigori Manoukov). They met again after the Great War when the Stravinsky family (Igor, wife Katarina played by Elena Morozova, and their four children), penniless after the Russian Revolu-tion, was in exile. Chanel offered them her house. Inevitably the two individuals who did so much to define the 20th century in cultural terms got involved in a poorly disguised love affair (“Love between the irresistible and the immovable,” as one critic described it). After some time Katarina left with the children, but eventually her husband recognized how essential her knowledgeable input was to his music and Chanel accepted Katarina’s statement that the family needed Igor more than she did. One fascinating segment of the film shows how Chanel Number 5 was developed. Rated R. (#343)

June 7, 2013 Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (2011, China/USA, di-rected by Wayne Wang, 104 min.) The film is based on Lisa See’s novel set in 19th century Hunan (China) that follows the lives of Lily and Snow Flower from the time they became laotong (“old sames”) as little girls and learned the secret women’s language, nu shu around the time their feet were bound. The laotong relationship continued independently of marriage, children or the changing for-tunes of life, giving women someone to depend on in a world run by men who regarded women as property. The tradition-laden story of Snow Flower (Gianna Jun) and Lily (Li Bingbing) is combined with a parallel present-day story, set in Shanghai, of best friends Sophia (also played by Gianna Jun) and Nina (also played by Li Bingbing). The cinematography and costuming are beautiful. Ad-ditional actors include Hugh Jackman, Vivian Wu, Jiang Wu, Russell Wong and Hu Jingyun. (#344) June 21, 2013 Eight Below (2006, USA, directed by Frank Marshall, 120 min.) If June 21 is a hot summer day, you will enjoy cooling off with this amaz-ing film about the survival of a dogsled team in Antarctica. While inspired by a Japanese film that in turn was based on true events in 1958, this is not a docu-mentary. The dogs are left chained outside a research station in Antarctica when the humans have to leave precipitously because of an approaching severe storm. Their guide, Jerry (Paul Walker), wants to return to rescue his beloved team but is not allowed to. The film focuses on the dogs and their remarkable behavior that guarantees the survival of the fittest. The dogs’ story is stronger and more riveting than that of the people involved. With Bruce Greenwood as scientist Davis McClaren. Moon Bloodgood as Katie (the pilot), Jason Biggs as Charlie Cooper, Gerard Plunkett as Dr. Andy Harrison, August Schellenberg as Mindo and Wendy Crewson as Eve McClaren. (#345) WE WILL TAKE OUR CUSTOMARY SUMMER BREAK DUR-ING JULY AND AUGUST, RESUMING THE FILM SERIES ON SEPTEMBER 6.

(Continued from page 1) Her academic profile can be found at: http://arthistory.ucdavis.edu/people/faculty/publications/watenpaugh.html “I speak Arabic, Armenian, French, Turkish, and some Per-sian. Before moving to Davis in 2006, I lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Los Angeles; Washington DC; and Houston. I have served on non-profit professional organizations before including the national board of the Society of Architectural Historians, the board of the Historians of Islamic Art, and the board of the Syrian Studies Association. “My hobbies and interests range from photography, food, travel, gardens and novels to most things related to young chil-dren. I look forward to becoming more involved in the com-munity, and I-House is a very good fit.” Next is Nathalie Minya, originally from Zimbabwe, Africa. She is currently a Davis homemaker raising two young chil-dren. She has a background in African fashion design and interna-tional business. She currently is the coordinator of the very popular International Fashion Show which is part of the Inter-national Festival held every October in Davis. Nathalie also taught a Zimbabwean cooking class at I-House and is helps the Tinogona Foundation build schools in Zimba-bwe. The third is Liz McCapes, vice president of Brown Con-struction in West Sacramento, and a longtime Davis resident. “My focus has been multifamily housing, primarily affordable housing (apartments and mixed use) working with nonprofit developers. I have overseen all of our multifamily housing projects for the past 15 years,” she said. Liz is a third generation graduate of UC Davis and a charter member of Davis Sunset Rotary Club who recently served as club president. She has two grown daughters. Karena Schmitendorf has been a resident of Davis for over 10 years. She relocated to Davis from Southeast Texas in 2002. As a professional artist and teacher she has worked and

exhibited her art regionally, nationally, and internationally. She has also lived and worked in Central and Eastern Europe. She has a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Washington Uni-versity, St. Louis, and a certificate in TESOL from UC Davis. She has a passion for art and cultural exchange and education. She currently enjoys teaching an English conversation class at I-House with a focus on topical and complex issues that are of concern to visiting international students and their fami-lies. Schmitendorf has been an active volunteer with Davis Commu-nity Meals for many years and has served on DCM board of di-rectors for more than five years. “I have worked with those members of the Davis community that are homeless and in need. This includes not only individuals on the street but women, children and families that deserve much needed attention and services,” she said. Lorrie Bortuzzo, the fifth new board member, is the coordina-tor of the I-House Friendship Program. “Lorrie has done a terrific job reviving the program that serves local hosts and international visitors,” said President Mary Phil-ip, the emcee of the Annual Membership meeting. Lorrie recent-ly moved to Davis from Minnesota where she worked in the in-ternational education field. Lorrie is joining the Program Committee at I-House where we can expect many great programs based on her experience and expertise. Many people were in the audience who were recog-nized for their contributions including Richard and Evelyne Rominger, Ray and Verena Borton, Maynard Skinner, and the Olsens who brought a display of I-House drawings through the years. Philip also announced the slate of officers for the coming year, which was voted on and approved: Philip remains as president, Hamza El Nakhal remains as vice president, Eileen Leung re-mains as secretary and Ameer Alsawaf as treasurer. A change to the I-House bylaws also was approved which will allow board members to continue for a third term if they wish to.

Annual Meeting Celebrates Early Founders

If there's one thing internationalistas like, it's dancing! I-House is happy to provide a selection of dance classes this spring and summer at 10 College Park. First up is the continuing yoga classes on Monday night, going strong for several years thanks to Loshan Ostrava, the leader. Loshan teaches beginners at 6 p.m. and the level goes up as time goes by. Bring a mat! Following yoga, one of our wonderful interns holds a Zumba class at 8 p.m. Zaira Lopez is a certified Zumba fitness instruc-tor. She also is a student so her last Zumba class of the quarter will be June 10. However, we also have a salsa casino dance class for couples taught by Carlos Galeano and his wife, Katherine Tehelen. It takes place on Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. We also want to give our members a break, so the salsa, yoga and tango classes are free to members. Yes, tango is taking place on Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The teacher is Damien Kima. Free to members, others pay $7 (same as the salsa class).

If you have dancing abilities, we would love to put you to work offering another class at I-House. Please contact Elisa-beth Sherwin, executive director, at (530) 753-5007.

I nternational House Davis is planning its third annual International Festival taking place this year on Oct. 12

at the Veterans' Memorial Center in Davis. "We will again feature our very popular International Fashion Show to be held during the International Festi-val," said Nathalie Mukome, coordinator of the show. "Last year we had over 70 people participating from all seven continents and we expect to have a great show this year, too. "But, we need your help! We are currently recruiting volunteers to help model your country's dress in the show. The only requirement is that you commit to a few short rehearsals. "There is no need for any professional modeling back-ground and all ages and nationalities are welcome!" added Mukome, who choreographs the production. "We are also looking for drumming groups from all seven continents so if you can play a drum or are part of a group or play the drum in a marching band, we need you," said Mukome. Reach her at internationalfashionshow.com and like our Facebook page, International Fashion Show Davis or call (660) 229- 0552

Picnic Day 2013 is brightened with the "I-House Flag Brigade" again adding color and spirit to the annual UC Davis parade.

M any of our members have been delighted with the spring season's worth of cooking classes from Turkish cooking by Selma Yatkin, vegetarian Indian by Chef Tarika, Japanese cooking by Cal Kado and Jewish cooking by Sara Brownstein. “The instructors buy the food and we pay them back by charging students a

small fee,” said Elisabeth Sherwin, executive director. “the students help chop, cook and clean, and then they all sit down together and enjoy a meal. The event is as cultural as it is gastronomic.” If you are interested in cooking a one-night cooking class, please let Elisabeth Sherwin know. Thank you!

Chef Selma Yatkin distributes food at the Turkish cooking class. She is now teach-ing a Turkish language class on Monday

nights at I-House.

Karahan Mete taught a class on baklava.

Cooking Classes at I-House

Cal Kado receives the SEN Volunteer of the Year Award from Arun Sen

before his Japanese cooking class in early April. We knew Cal wouldn't be

at the Annual Membership meeting so we surprised him and thanked him for all his hard work around I-House.

Thanks again, Cal!

Nathalie Dzokerayi Mukome gave a Zimbabwean cooking class in April. Inter-estingly, several students are taking photos of the food as it is being prepared. Nathalie is the newest board member at International House.

In May two shows will continue: Philippe Gandiol is showing his oil paintings in the Community Room through the first week of May and then the I-House Art Committee will have a joint show. Marilyn Judson is showing her paper sculptures in the Lounge. Gandiol is leaving for Europe later in May and his show had to be cut short, but hurry and see his three still lifes, and an array of oils on canvas and linen depicting scenes from Northern California. Judson's show is titled "Then and Now." "Something about working with paper is very exciting to me and I always come back to it in one form or another," she said. "Paper sculpture is my latest venture." There will be an art reception at I-House on Friday, May 10 for “Art by Committee”. On June 14, a joint opening reception will be held for two I-House artists from 6 to 8 p.m. In June and July, I-House will show works by Lucy Sargeant in the Community Room and a group show "Let Our Voices Be Heard," led by Raquel Rojas, will be in the Lounge in June only. The artists represented in the group show include: Rocky Rojas, Shelly Kousnetz, Melissa Marzan, Kevin Lozano, Faire Yang and Brea Dawson. Sandy Holman, a member of the I-House board, is assisting with the show, which promotes expression of identity, val-ues and culture through the power of art. She can be reached at (530) 902-4334. Jeffrey Granett, chair of the I-House Art Committee, will be exhibiting new work at Logos Books downtown, 513 Second St., with the opening reception on Friday, May 10. "No linoleum block prints this year," he said. "Something different: Plexiglas drypoint prints. Come see. Opinions needed." Sargeant retired from teaching anatomy /life drawing and

representational drawing at San Jose State University, Sargeant moved to Davis near family. She now is exploring the genre of watercolor painting. “Watercolor painting is humbling; it’s where the artist gets to exercise half control and half surrender to the medium’s independ-ent way of interacting with itself, the paper, and the artist’s brush,” she said. “So different from drawing and oil painting I worked with for many years!” she added. On Friday, July 12, artist Carlos Palacio will have an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. for his work which will hang in the Lounge.

Friendship Program going strong at spring barbecue

Lorrie Bortuzzo, the chair of the Friendship Program, reports a very suc-cessful spring barbeque and welcome. The barbeque was held at I-House and attracted both local hosts and interna-tional visitors. “This program is key to I-House,” said Elisabeth Sherwin, execu-tive director. “ It is not a home-stay pro-gram, it is literally a ‘friendship’ program where local hosts meet interna-tional visitors — students, scholars or their parents coming here for a visit.” The barbeque was held on Sunday, April 7, 2013, and gathered 37 participants. The program currently has 27 local hosts families and 45 international visitors/ scholars or students so more local hosts are needed! Contact Lorrie if you are interested at [email protected]. It is a wonderful program.
