APPLICANTS SEEKING TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPSGenerally, international students do not qualify for financial aid. Appli-cants who wish to apply for Research or Teaching Assistantships shouldcontact the appropriate department. Please note that the Office ofGraduate Admissions does not handle financial aid requests.
Applicants applying for assistantships must also demonstrate accept-able skills in spoken English. Such applicants should take the Test ofSpoken English (TSE) offered at TOEFL test centers. Test results shouldbe sent by the Educational Testing Service to the chair of the WayneState University academic department to which you are applying. Forinformation about the test, write to: Test of Spoken English, P.O. Box2882, Princeton, NJ 08541-2882 U.S.A. If the TSE cannot be taken, it isrecommended that the applicant correspond with the department chairfrom which financial support is requested.
APPLICATION FILING DATESThe Office of Graduate Admissions will make every effort to process yourapplication in time for the semester of your choice. However, we havedeveloped the deadline dates shown below which will ensure a decisionbefore the semester starts. Unless your application and all supportingmaterials are received by the date indicated, we may not have time toconsider you for the desired term. In addition, several programs havefirm deadlines which are earlier than those listed (see “department/college/school information“ inside). Please note that this applicationis only applicable for the semester you indicate. Attested or“true“ copies are acceptable only if certified by signature and seal of anadministrative official of the school in which the studies were completed.Additionally, documents may be attested by the embassy or consulatelocated in the country from which the student is applying.
NON-UNIVERSITY EVALUATION AGENCIESIt is recommended, but not required, that applicants with credentialsfrom countries outside of North America submit transcripts or marksheets to evaluation agencies. You may send your academic credentialsto the Education Credential Evaluators (ECE) for evaluation and to de-termine degree equivalency. Contact ECE at P.O. FINANCIAL DOCUMENTATION OF SUPPORTInternational students must provide official financial support state-ments documenting the sponsor‘s willingness to pay for tuition,registration fees, books and supplies, and living expenses (if appli-cable) for the duration of the anticipated study period at WayneState.
You or your sponsor‘s ability to provide the needed funds must beverified by a third party, such as a bank. You may use the bankstatement included in this booklet, or you may request a letter fromyour sponsor‘s bank indicating the name of the bank, the accountnumber, account holder‘s signature, and bank official‘s signature.These documents are required for the student F-1 or J-1 visa petitionat the American embassy or consulate in the home country. It isadvised that students request two original copies of financialdocuments: one for the visa application and one for WayneState University.
REGISTRATION PROCEDURESIf admitted, the student will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (I-20or DS-2019) with the official letter of admission. This certificate isrequired to apply for a student visa from the U.S. embassy or con-sulate. The applicant should not leave the home country beforereceiving official notification of admission from the Office of Uni-versity Admissions. Once your student visa is approved and youhave entered the U.S., it is imperative that you contact the Of-fice of International Students and Scholars (OISS) at (313) 577-3422. You must present your I-20 or DS-2019 to the OISS inorder to finalize your transfer or entry. Failure to do so mayaffect your student status in the U.S. and will prevent you fromregistering for classes in the semester following your entry. The United States Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations require that all interna-tional applicants demonstrate their ability to meet educational and living expenses in order for theuniversity to issue a Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 or DS-2019). For this reason, this form must becompleted and returned regardless of the source of funding. Please complete the appropriate category ofpage 2, section 3. Bank statement must be current; statements that are older than six months are notacceptable.
If the applicant is married and plans to bring the spouse and dependent children to the United States,additional funds are required to cover the expenses of the spouse and children.
The Wayne State University admissions office will not issue the Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20 orDS-2019) unless the applicant has:

Students Applying from Other Countries:❒ 1. Official application and $50 application fee payable in U.S. funds.
❒ 2. Certified English translations of all university, college, and other transcripts required. Must bear seal/stamp of the issuing institution. No other verification will be accepted.
❒ 3. Official transcripts in native language, if applicable. Official degree certificates in English and native language.
❒ 4. Signed Statement of Financial Support. This cannot be more than six months old.
❒ 5. Supporting bank documentation verifying the minimum required dollar amount specified on the ‘‘Graduate I-20 Amount Requirements’’ form. Bank documents must show equivalent dollar amount and cannot be more than six months old.
❒ 6. TOEFL or MELAB with minimum score of 550 or 85, respectively. Minimum required score for the computer-based TOEFL is 213. Test results cannot be more than two years old. A score of 6.5 on the IELTS exam is also acceptable.
❒ 7. Signed photograph. (Only one is needed.)
❒ 8. If you are currently holding a non-immigrant immigration status (H1, B1, F2, TN, etc.), please include a
photocopy of your visa documents.
