OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION TO HOST 2011 INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK
OIE Invites Students, Faculty and Staff to 14 Free Events
MILWAUKEE (Nov. 2, 2011) — The Office of International Education will celebrate International Education Week Monday, Nov. 14 to Friday, Nov. 18 including 14 free events surrounding the benefits of global awareness and exchange. In support of the joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, International Education Week will focus on international perspectives and understanding within the Marquette community to become better collaborators, competitors and compassionate neighbors in today’s global society.
“At Father Pilarz's inauguration, we recognized two honorary degree recipients that epitomized what International Education Week tries to achieve by broadening our students awareness about the global society and the need ‘to be the difference’ in today' s world," said Terry Miller, Office of International Education Director. “It’s a unique opportunity to be on campus and have the world brought to Milwaukee through various speakers, programs and events.”
International Education Week will kick off with a lecture by three Marquette educators including a guest presenter to discuss the challenge of the “globalization of superficiality” from an address by Rev. Adolfo Nicolas, S.J., presented to Jesuit university leaders in 2010 in Mexico City. The lecture will take place on Monday, Nov. 14 from 4 to 5 p.m. in Eckstein Hall, Appellate Courtroom. All interested attendees must RSVP by Monday, Nov. 7 to [email protected].
Students and faculty members that studied abroad and international students studying at Marquette can also enter the International Photo Contest taking place on Marquette Global’s Facebook page. Applicants must submit up to three photos by Friday, Nov. 11 to [email protected] before voting opens on Monday, Nov. 14. The photo with the most “likes” by peers, friends, family, etc. will win a $100 STA Travel voucher. The runner up will receive a $50 gift certificate to the Emperor of China on Brady St. and a $25 gift card to La Merenda international tapas restaurant; the third place winner will receive a $50 gift card to Chez Jacques on First St.
Other events throughout the week include a discussion on the economic crisis in the eurozone, Rishi Tea samplings, La Tertulia Spanish language exchange, an interactive sushi demonstration (RSVP required), a free screening of the Nobel Peace Prize winning Ellen Sirleaf documentary Pray the Devil Back to Hell, an international trivia night and more!
