The Primary Update International Day Special 2013 March 21st, 2013 Know yourself, learn from each other The “big idea” behind our school motto has never been better seen in action than at our 2013 celebration of International Day. With more than 60 counties represented, the event demonstrated not only national and cultural pride as members of the community took part in an Olympic style march past to open the event, but also the great respect we all have for each other’s sense of identity. The opening ceremony really got us off to an emotional start as we all came together to begin celebrating our multiculturalism for the next few hours. Children, parents and children were then free to wander around a cross between an international market place and world expo! Regional stalls gave a flavour of cultural identity in more ways than one as visitors were given the opportunity to find out more about the traditions, language, history and geography of a country or wider area. Then, of course there was the food, prepared by each host country, which was happily consumed by visitors and volunteers alike in and around the central arena. The action continued outside courtesy of e-sports, while inside, children enjoyed a range of competitions. With national song, dance and performance taking place every half hour, everyone’s enthusiastic attention was held right until the very end of a wonderfully enjoyable event. Andrew Homden, Principal

WHAT THE CHILDREN THOUGHT ABOUT

INTERNATIONAL DAY

I really enjoyed walking in the parade. I loved flying the flag for my country. I en-joyed tasting all of the delicious food, choc-olates and sweets! They were yum! I loved doing the Scottish Dancing! It was such fun!

I enjoyed everything because it was such fun! The food was so nice and spicy! I loved the costumes and everyone was so happy. Everyone loved com-ing to our ‘Russia’’ table. I was feeling very proud.

I enjoyed tasting other foods from other countries and collecting stamps on my passport. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful flags and bright colours. I enjoyed having lots and fun and playing with my friends.
