With anobjective toextend the

technology to thestudents and researchersof the region therebyenriching their technicalskills to undertake largescale genome sequencingprojects, the Centre forAdvanced Studies inBotany, North-EasternHill University, Shillongorganized a hands ontraining workshop on NextGeneration Sequencingand its Applications fromMarch 3-10, 2014 underthe DBT project on“Establishment of Statelevel Biotech Hub”.

Prof. P. Shukla,Vi c e - C h a n c e l l o r ,NEHU, whoinaugurated theworkshop, drew aparallel betweenprocessing in computersand NGS and hopedthat the trainingacquired during theworkshop would beuseful to theparticipants in theirteaching and researchactivities.

During hisPresidential address,Prof. A. K. Misra, Dean,School of Life Sciences,NEHU emphasized onthe advancement oftechniques in the field ofmolecular biology and theneed to be abreast withthe latest developments inthe subject.

Earlier, Prof. N.

Hands on Training on Next Generation Sequencing

Venugopal, Head,Department of Botany inhis welcome speechinformed the participantsabout the facilities in thedepartment which couldbe effectively used bythe students andresearch scholars of theregion in furthering theirtechnical skills andundertaking researchesin niche areas of plantsciences.

F i f t e e nparticipants, includingteachers from collegesand research scholars/mid career scientistsfrom different institutionsand universities of theregion attended the 8-day workshop. Theworkshop comprisedentirely of laboratorywork wherein theparticipants actually

performed the variousprocesses involved inRNA isolation fromtissues, cDNA synthesis,cDNA libraryconstruction, libraryenrichment, PCR,transcriptome sequencing, amplicon sequencing and

data analysis.

The workshopconcluded with thevaledictory session onMarch 10 during whichthe Vice-Chancellordistributed thecertificates to theparticipants.

Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) is the latest in theseries of evolving techniques in the area of nucleotide

sequencing. While deciphering DNA sequences isessential for virtually all branches of biological

research, the capillary electrophoresis basedsequencing protocols are hampered by limitations ofthroughput, scalability and speed. Next Generation

Sequencing basically involves sequentialidentification of the bases of a small fragment ofDNA from signals emitted as each fragment is re-

synthesized from the template DNA. NGS extends thisprocess across millions of reactions in a massively

parallel fashion, rather than being limited to a singleor a few DNA fragments, thereby enabling rapidsequencing of large stretches of DNA base pairs

spanning entire genomes with a consequentgeneration of hundreds of gigabases of data in a

single sequencing run.
