LAUREATE STAFF

The success of any school is determined by the staff that are committed to giving the continuous support and believing that all students can succeed. The staff provides a caring learning environment and a challenging curriculum to prepare students to achieve success not only at Laureate but in their educational pathways in post-secondary institutions. All Laureate staff are highly educated with university degrees and experience in working with people. They take the time to listen, understand, and provide support whenever it is needed for students to learn. Creating a respectful, kind, and positive learning environment does give students the best circumstances to do their best. Counselling is always available for the students to discuss what their personal needs are and how they can reach their academic goals. The teachers take the time to get to know the students in the classroom as well as giving opportunity for experiential learning.

Staff participate in regular professional development so that they can find ways to work in professional learning teams; collaborate on using evidence-based instructional strategies and effective feedback. Bring student engagement in the classroom will motivate students to improve their learning and obtain higher grades.

STUDENTS OF LAUREATE

Laureate students understand their successes can be achieved if they believe they can succeed. Having a positive attitude for learning, a desire to work hard and complete their work, participating in group discussions, and attending all classes will be what are required for getting grades they need to be accepted into a college or university.

It takes more than gaining knowledge. Information is readily available through the teachers, internet, and other resources. However, a student of the 21st century must learn how to use this information, what is critical, and develop critical and analytical thinking skills to become engaged life-long learners.

Laureate is a safe, nurturing, respectful, and positive learning environment that supports students to succeed to their full potential. It is essential that students show respect to each other, the staff, and also the property. A Code of Conduct, dress code expectations, attendance, and punctuality policies are provided in the student handbook.

Education is an investment. Students must decide how much time, energy, and desire they will make to get the best education that is offered to them.

PROGRAM SELECTION

Where are you going after Secondary School? It is important to take the time to think about where a student plans to go after completing the secondary school program. With this goal, a student will then be able to choose the courses needed to graduate and the courses required to obtain acceptance into a specialized program available at training centers, colleges and universities.

To consider their options, students should consult with their parents/guardians, teachers, friends and administration. Websites may also be helpful to determine program and career choices based on students’ strengths, abilities and interests.

CONSIDER PATHWAYS TO:A. College where students can focus on a

specific career program; students may

also choose to attend college for several

years and then transfer to a university.

B. University where students wish to

pursue their academic learning in an

under graduate program but can also

continue to study in post-graduate

programs.

STUDENT EVALUATION AND ASSESSMENTEach teacher will provide a rubric and how

evaluation will be determined for each

course or major assignment. A report card

PATHWAYSLaureate International College offers students options of pathways to university admissions to suit their interests and goals.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) COURSES Students must have satisfactorily completed all ESL courses before they can enrol in reg ular Grade 11 and 12 English courses. At Laureate International College, students can obtain all 5 levels in one school year. These courses prepare students to use English with increasing accuracy in classroom and social situations. ESL courses also provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to adapt to their new lives in Canada.

LIFE LEARNING A few days are designated in the Fall as life learning days so that students will have an opportunity to experience other parts of Toronto and Ontario. Plan will be discussed with their teachers about this mandatory program that is part of the Laureate Program. There will be additional costs.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIESLearning is more than what students study in the classroom. Students are able to experience excursions to various venues that are linked to the curriculum expectations of a credit course. These activities are just as important for learning and probably most memorable.

PRIOR LEARNING CREDITS Upon arrival at Laureate International College, a student is administered a diagnostic as sessment in English and Math. This evaluation along with the student records from his/her last school will determine the appropriate program and academic level for each student.

At the end of the school year (June), students may earn equivalency credits based on their prior learning. Based on their previous academic records and what their academic achievements have been while attending Laureate, a student can obtain up to 26 credits of the 30 credits required to obtain on Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Each student is individually assessed to determine their equivalency credits.

HOMESTAY Laureate assists each of our international students in searching for a suitable homestay that meets his/her individual needs. The homestays that we select and recommend to our students

are near the school. Besides offering food and accommodation, these homestays can also provide pick up at the airport on students’ arrival, laundry, arranging activities on the weekends and holidays. Laureate will visit the homestays frequently and work with the homestays on a continuous basis to support the students. The majority of our homestays are English-Speaking Canadian families who are happy to share the Ca nadian culture with the students.

COUNSELLINGIt is important that students receive counselling to make sure they are focused and on track to completing their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). These recognitions are important for students to strive for to gain more abilities and to strengthen their application to post-secondary institutions.

Our servicesLAUREATE FRATERNITY FELLOWSHIP

Students develop friendships and opportunities to network with other peers through the Fraternity Fellowship. Activities and excursions are planned as well as speakers who can discuss topics on careers, health, and social issues.

CUSTODIANSHIPThe Canadian law stipulates that students under 18 years of age must have a legal guardian in Canada. The role of the guardian is equivalent to being a “parent” when a student is studying abroad. The student can contact the guardian with any questions they need help in their studies or adjusting to the Canadian lifestyle and customs.

The guardian is required to complete the custodianship documents available on the Canadian Immigration and Citizenship website and must have these forms notarized. These documents are to be submitted to Laureate for us to contact the guardian if needed.

If a student does not have a legal guardian, the parents can submit a request to Laureate to provide custodianship.

“We believe that communication, attention and integration are the key ingredients of a successful homestay.”

AIRPORT PICK UP Laureate can arrange special pick up at the Toronto International Airport upon the arrival of a student. Our driver will be able to contact the school if the student requires immedi-ate assistance at Customs.

NEWCOMER ORIENTATION Our staff will show each newcomer how to take the public transit to travel from homestay to the school. We will also help him/her to apply for a public transit identity card, library card, new cell phone and to open a bank account for the student.

HEALTH INSURANCE Every international student should acquire private health insurance. Our staff will assist stu dents in applying for the insurance and explain to them the procedures in visiting doctors or hospital and submitting claims.

professional commitment to excellence sets the standard in everything that she undertakes.”

STUDENTS SAY …

Maverick, York University

“One of my biggest takeaways from Laureate is to adopt a positive attitude toward studying and going to school. Teachers and students are so passionate about their work that they motivate me to do better. In comparison to public school in China, Laureate offers small class size that allows teachers to give attention to every student. For example, my English teacher often employs interactive activities such as debate and class blog to encourage students to participate. It’s easy to reach out to teachers and alumni if I have any question about universities. I believe my experience here has prepared me for going to university next year both mentally and academically”

Andy, University of Ontario Institute of Technology

“My English improved a lot after coming to Laureate! My improvement is most likely a result of the help I received from my teachers. My English teacher is very funny and she makes classes entertaining and easy to understand. Other teachers are also patient and ap proachable when I have any question. Even on weekends, I can always ask them ques tions via email or WeChat (Yes! We taught them how to use it).”

Not only I had great lectures from teachers, I also contributed to interesting projects that allow me to be creative and collaborative. This year, I made a short film with 3 other classmates about Canadian students’ lives and showed it to the entire school. I love exploring new skills and subject that I don’t usually learn from the textbook, and am very grateful that teachers and students in Laureate helped me to do so. “

J.M., Parent

“For personal reasons, my son completed his 12th grade from outside of Canada. When my son returned to Canada, illogical admissions criteria disappointed us. My son is a Canadian citizen who faced hardship but Laureate International College helped my son get admission into a college in Toronto. I appreciate the professional efforts made by Laureate. My decision to enroll with Laureate was justified.”

Tomomi

“This was my first time to go to North America. It was very difficult to get used to it at first. But as soon as I went to school, I found a lot of interesting things that I could learn there. For example, the way of teaching English is different from my home country that felt very fresh. All the students and teachers are very friendly. To be honest, I’m not good at speaking to other people. However, the positive and friendly atmosphere at Laureate made it easy for me to develop the confidence in relating to others. It was a big change.”
