crystalline Testing Rapidly evaluates Radiation exposure

t esting crystalline insulators found in most modern electronics could fa-cilitate emergency response dosimetry or nuclear forensics, claims a

new study. Developed by researchers at North Carolina State University(NC State; Raleigh, USA; www.ncsu.edu), the new approach relies on test-ing surface mount resistors, found in everything from thumb drives to smart-phones, in order to measure background radiation level. The resistor is firstremoved from the electronic device and placed in a thermally stimulated lu-minescence reader. Spectra reading related to the number of electrons foundin flaws inherent to the sample's crystalline structure are then measured andfed into a custom single aliquot regenerative (SAR) protocol to calculate ra-diation exposure.

world’s First AI-based Algorithms for eD Receive ce certification

Z ebra Medical Vision (Kibbutz Shefa-yim, Israel; www.zebra-med.com)

has received two new CE marked registra-tions for its deep learning algorithms thathelp radiologists and Emergency Room(ER) staff to prioritize acute conditions forthe first time in both CT scans and X-raysand reduce reports turnaround time(RTAT). The artificial intelligence (AI)technology can flag time-critical casessuch as pneumothorax in chest X-rays andbrain bleeds in CT scans. The technologyreduces the time it takes radiologists andER staff to spot acute conditions by 80%,which in turn, improves the quality andtimeliness of treatment.

new Dosimeter MeasuresPhoton and beta Radiation

a Bluetooth-enabled dosimeter withdual detectors addresses internation-

al requirements for independent deep andshallow measurements of both photonand beta radiation. The Mirion Technologies(San Ramon, CA, USA; www.mirion.com)Instadose2 dosimeter provides the abilityto wirelessly capture, transmit, measure, analyze, and report radiation dose expo-sure any time, and is ideally suited forhigh-energy, beta-sensitive environments, including nuclear medicine and radiother-apy settings, for interventional radiology,in nuclear power plants, and in researchfacilities that utilize beta emitting energysources. Instadose2 utilizes BluetoothLow Energy (BLE) to transmit dose data toa variety of devices, eliminating the time-consuming process of badge collection, processing, and redistribution.

Deep Learning Model classifies chest X-Rays

c ombining deep learning (DL) modelswith adjudicated image labels can

help classify clinically important findingson chest X-rays, claims a new study. Re-searchers at Google Health (MountainView, CA; https://health.google), ApolloRadiology International (Hyderabad, In-dia; https://apolloradiologyintl.com), Cal-ifornia Advanced Imaging (Novato, USA;www.cairad.com), and other institutionshave developed DL models that can accu-rately classify four clinically important

chest X-ray findings - pneumothorax, nodules and masses, fractures, and air-space opacities. The target findings were selected in consultation with radi-ologists and clinical colleagues, so as to focus on conditions that are bothcritical for patient care, and for which chest X-ray images alone are an im-portant and accessible first-line imaging study.

new MRI Technique Improves breast cancer Screening

a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) waistcoat packed with flexibleradio frequency (RF) coils could screen women for breast cancer faster

and with less disadvantages, claims a new study. Under development at theMedical University of Vienna (MedUni; Austria; www.meduniwien.ac.at),Université de Lorraine (Nancy, France; www.univ-lorraine.fr), and other in-stitutions, the prototype waistcoat device is a mechanically flexible, receive-only array that contains 32 RF coils sewn into the fabric, each consisting ofan 18 centimeter long coaxial cable formed into an eight centimeter wideloop. A receiver unit at the end of the cable feeds the signal into the com-puter. Motion sensors built into the vest monitor the patient so that it cancancel out breathing movements that distort the image.

novel Algorithm Shortens MRI Scans to nearly a Minute

a new multicontrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique cancut down the time needed to complete a scan to about 70 seconds,

claims a new study. Developed by researchers at Karolinska Institutet (KI;Solna, Sweden; www.ki.se), Karolinska University Hospital (Stockholm,Sweden; www.karolinska.se), GE Healthcare (GE, Little Chalfont, UK), andother institutions, the echo planar image mix (EPIMix) MRI technique com-bines contrast T1 -FLAIR, T2 -weighted, diffusion-weighted images (DWI),apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), T2*-weighted, and T2 -FLAIR imagesinto one multicontrast MRI technique. EPI is capable of acquiring an entireMRI in only a fraction of a second; in single-shot EPI, all the spatial-encodingdata of an image can be obtained after a single radio-frequency excitation, resulting in high-quality images comparable to conventional MRI, but withmajor advantages over conventional MRI that include reduced imagingtime, decreased motion artifact, and the ability to image rapid physiologicprocesses of the human body.

Proton Therapy Lowers Risk of Radiation Therapy Side effects

a new study suggests that cancer patients undergoing proton radiationtherapy (RT), instead of conventional photon treatment, are at a signif-

icantly lower risk of experiencing side effects. Researchers at the Universityof Pennsylvania (Penn; Philadelphia, USA; www.upenn.edu), WashingtonUniversity School of Medicine (WUSTL; St. Louis, MO, USA; https://med-icine.wustl.edu), and other institutions conducted a study involving 1,483cancer patients, 391 of whom received proton therapy and 1,092 who un-derwent photon treatment. The patients suffered from non-metastatic braincancer, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, and gy-necologic cancer, and were treated with concurrent chemotherapy and ra-diation. According to lead author Brian Baumann, MD, of Penn andWUSTL, “our clinical experience is that concurrent chemoradiation therapypatients treated with protons, rather than photons, tend to have fewer sideeffects."

novel Magnetic Metamaterial boosts MRI Performance

a new magnetic metamaterial enables a marked boost in radio frequency(RF) field strength, producing clearer MRI images at double the speed.

Developed at Boston University (BU; MA, USA; www.bu.edu), the magnet-ic metamaterial is composed of an array of unit cells featuring metallic he-lices known as helical resonators. The three-centimeter-tall structures, cre-ated from three-dimensional (3D) printed plastic and coils of thin copperwire, can be grouped into a flexible array that is pliable enough to cover aperson’s kneecap, abdomen, head, or any part of the body in need of imag-ing. When the helices array is in position, the resonators interact with themagnetic field of the MRI scanner, boosting the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Ultrasound Monitor Delivers blood Flow Data on Demand

a novel system combines 3D ultrasound imaging with advanced algo-rithms to automate visual and quantitative blood flow monitoring after

surgery. The Sonavex (Baltimore, MD, USA; www.sonavex.com) EchoSuredevice is a portable ultrasound system designed for non-expert users to rap-idly detect postoperative clot formation by automatically identifying loss offlow through blood vessels. Echosure is designed to work with theEchoMark implant, which serves as a marker for soft tissue sites during sur-gery. As a result of its ultrasonic reflective properties, doctors can preciselyvisualize the area during follow-up evaluations. EchoSure uses deep learningalgorithms to derive where the ultrasound beam is coming from, and canthen compute the volumetric flow rate through the vessels of interest so itcan quantify the blood flow rate over time.

Ultrasound-on-chip Transforms Field Diagnostics

a handheld, single-probe whole body system is making ultrasoundtechnology universally accessible and affordable. The Butterfly Net-

work (New York, NY, USA; www.butterflynetwork.com) Butterfly iQ is amulti-mode (M-mode, B-mode, and Color Doppler) ultrasound device lessthan 15 centimeters long and weighing just 313 grams, allowing it to eas-ily fit into a pocket. Butterfly IQ is programmed with 18 preset scanningprograms, which enable diagnostic ultrasound imaging of peripheral ves-sels, including for carotid and arterial studies and procedural guidance;and cardiac, abdominal, urology, gynecological; fetal/obstetric, and mus-culoskeletal use. Jonathan Rothberg, founder and chairman of ButterflyNetwork, said, “Two thirds of the world's population has no access tomedical imaging. Butterfly's Ultrasound-on-a-Chip technology enables alow-cost window into the human body, making high-quality diagnostic im-aging accessible to anyone.”

Pocket Ultrasound Scanners Revolutionize Patient care

a second-generation series of wireless ultrasound scanners put the powerand image quality of larger, more expensive systems in an affordable

device that fits in a pocket. The new Clarius Mobile Health (Clarius; Burn-aby, BC, Canada; https://clarius.com) line-up includes two multipurposescanners for whole body imaging, the convex C3 HD, which operates at afrequency of 2-6 MHz, and the phased array PA HD - Cardiac/EMED,which operates at a frequency of 1-4 MHz. Both systems scan a maximaldepth of 40 cm and are designed for use in abdominal, lung, cardiac,ob/gyn, superficial, and vascular access applications. The second generationdevices are almost half the size of the original devices, but have eight timesthe processing power of most handheld scanners. In addition, four scannersdedicated to specialties such as sports medicine and anesthesia are nowavailable.

Ghost Tomography May Lead to Safer 3D Imaging

a n unconventional approach known as ghost imaging could revolution-ize three-dimensional (3D) tomography screening for early warning

signs of disease. Developed at Australian National University (ANU; Canber-ra; www.anu.edu.au), Monash University (Melbourne, Australia; www.monash.edu), and The European Synchrotron (Grenoble, France; www.esrf.eu), ghost tomography (GT) uses random x-ray intensity patterns to il-luminate an object from various angles, with each beam split in two. Thepattern is recorded in the primary beam, which acts as a reference since itdoes not penetrate the object; the secondary beam passes through the ob-ject, with X-ray transmission recorded by a single-pixel detector. “3D X-rayghost imaging, or ghost tomography, is a completely new field, so there's anopportunity for the scientific community and industry to work together toexplore and develop this exciting innovation,” concluded Dr. Kingston. “Avariation of our approach doesn't require an X-ray camera at all, just a sensor- this would make a 3D medical imaging setup much cheaper.”

AI Accelerates chest X-Ray Analysis

a novel artificial Intelligence (AI) system can dramatically reduce thetime needed to receive an expert radiologist opinion on abnormal

chest X-rays with critical findings, claims a new study. Developed by re-searchers at King’s College London (KCL; UK; www.kcl.ac.uk), the Uni-versity of Warwick (Coventry, UK; https://warwick.ac.uk), and other in-stitutions, the AI system was developed using 470,388 fully anonymizedinstitutional adult chest radiographs acquired from 2007 to 2017. The re-sults revealed that normal chest radiographs (used to diagnose and moni-tor a wide range of conditions affecting the lungs, heart, bones, and softtissues) were detected by the AI system with a sensitivity of 71%, speci-ficity of 95%, PPV of 73%, and NPV of 94%. The average reporting delayusing the algorithms was reduced from 11.2 to just 2.7 days for critical

Space exploration Technology Provides bedside Imaging capabilities

a new flat-panel source (FPS) makes portable, low-dose, and low-costthree-dimensional (3D) digital tomosynthesis (DT) more accessible.

The Adaptix (Begbroke, UK; www.adaptiximaging.com) FPS is composedof an array of cold cathode field emitters fitted into a sealed unit; eachfield emitter generates a conelet of X-rays, while a proprietary system, de-signed to avoid the common problem of high-voltage switching, allowsfor each X-ray emission to be addressed and individually controlled, thuseliminating large numbers of overlapping X-rays. An additional benefit ofthe flat panel design is that it can cover many different angles, allowingdepth information to be derived through DT.

Surgical Tractography Tool Automates white Matter Segmentation

a n automated segmentation feature visualizes and highlights brainwhite matter bundles of interest instantly, allowing brain surgeons

to identify safer approaches. Part of the Synaptive Medical (Toronto;Canada; www.synaptivemedical.com) Modus Plan surgical planningsoftware tool, The segmentation feature uses 3D visualization overlaidon an anatomical scan derived from preoperative imaging and volumet-ric anatomical and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) renderings. The auto-mated tract segmentation feature provides surgeons with the ability tominimize disruption of white matter, which is or-ganized into bundles that may correspond to dif-ferent brain functions, and whose particular lo-cation differs on a per-patient basis.

Scanner Produces whole-body PeT Images in Seconds

a modified positron emission tomography(PET) scanner can create three dimensional

(3D) renderings of the entire human body in aslittle as 20 seconds, and with less radioactive ex-posure. Developed by researchers at the Uni-versity of California Davis (UCD; USA; www.ucdavis.edu), the University of Pennsylvania(Philadelphia, PA, USA; www.upenn.edu), Unit-ed Imaging Healthcare (UIH; Shanghai, China;www.united-imaging.com), and other institu-tions, the two-meter long device is made of eightPET scanner rings, each 25 centimeters thick, that can image the entire body at once. By com-bining eight scans into one, total body renderingcan be accomplished in 1/40 of the time of a con-ventional PET scanner, as well as using 1/40 ofthe radiation dose. The modified PET scanner, which is called Explorer, could be especially help-ful for imaging children, who tend to movearound inside a scanner and ruin the measure-ments,

web-based Radiology App enables DIcOM Image Sharing

a new, web-based radiology application en-ables doctors to view, edit, and share images

through any platform (Windows, Android, Linux,iOS) without the need to install any software. TheHNC Virtual Solutions (Wixom, MI, USA; https://hncvirtualsolutions.com) imaging platform al-lows doctors to load a digital imaging and com-munications in medicine (DICOM) image directlyfrom any cloud-based or local source, such as afile folder, CD, laptop, USB flash drive or any oth-er external device, providing access to real-timecommunication and collaboration, as well as of-fering numerous functionalities, such as screensharing, screen recording, messaging, and au-thentication. Once loaded, the image can beshared to anyone in the world without the needto first upload it to a server or cloud.

Mathematical Model Improves Radiation Therapy

a new mathematical model spatially optimizes external beam radiationtherapy (XRT) in order to significantly increase the number of brain tu-

mor cells killed during treatment. Developed at the University of Waterloo(UW; Canada; https://uwaterloo.ca) and the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology (MIT, Cambridge, MA, USA; www.mit.edu), the new model op-timizes one-step and two-step radiation profiles during the first and secondXRT fractions, while setting a cap on the total dose a patient could receivethroughout treatment. Tumor anatomy was then sectioned into multipleportions, with the area most densely populated with cells being one portionand the remainder of cells the other.

bimodal contrast Agent Advances Medical Imaging

a new study details a two-in-one probe made of a contrast agent for mag-netic resonance imaging (MRI) and a dye for photoacoustic imaging (PI).

Developed at the University of Mons (Belgium; https://web.umons.ac.be) and the Center of Microscopy and Molecular Imaging (CMMI;Charleroi, Belgium; www.cmmi.be), the bimodal agent combines the MRIgadolinium agent Gd-PCTA, and an organic fluorophore dye called ZW800-1.The bimodal probe enhances MRI contrast as strongly as a commercial MRIagent, while at the same time providing a photoacoustic signal similar to theoriginal PAI probe. The probe can thus provide hybrid images with a highanatomical resolution provided by MRI, and precise localization of the contrastagent thanks to PAI. Preliminary relaxometric and photoacoustic characteriza-tions indicate that the bimodal agent fulfills its function. The study was pub-lished on June 26, 2019, in the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry.

AI Algorithm Outperforms Human experts In Identifying cervical Precancer

r esearchers from the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MA,USA; www.nih.gov) have developed a computer algorithm that can

analyze digital images of a woman’s cervix and accurately identify precan-cerous changes that require medical attention. The artificial intelligence(AI) approach, called automated visual evaluation, could potentially revo-lutionize cervical cancer screening, especially in low-resource settings.Health workers can easily perform automated visual evaluation by using acell phone or similar camera device for cervical screening and treatmentduring a single visit. Additionally, the approach can be performed withminimal training, making it ideal for countries with limited health care re-sources, where cervical cancer is a leading cause of illness and deathamong women.

a new augmented reality (AR) technology platform for surgical applica-tions has received 510(k) clearance for clinical use in the operating

room by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The enterprise Surgi-calAR platform developed by medical technology company Medivis (NewYork, NY, USA; www.medivis.com) integrates the latest advancements in AR,artificial intelligence (AI), and computer vision to advance surgical visualiza-tion, thereby reducing surgical complications and improving patient out-comes while lowering costs for healthcare systems.

Decellularized Regenerative Device Supports cardiac Tissues

a novel epicardial patch supports the atria and the ventricular walls ofhearts that have been thinned or damaged as a result of myocardial in-

farct (MI). The CorMatrix (Rosewell, GA, USA; www.cormatrix.com) CorPATCH is designed to provide host cellular ingrowth and robust angiogenesisin support of adult epicardial structures post MI. It can also be used to treatsequelae secondary to MI that result in a thinning of the left or right ventric-ular walls, aneurysm formation, or for any other areas requiring a patch. TheCor PATCH is made of a multi-laminate sheet of decellularized lyophilizedextracellular matrix (ECM) derived from porcine small intestinal submucosa, which serves as a bioscaffold for vascular ingrowth from adjacent tissues.

biological Sealant Stems Moderate bleeding During Surgery

a n innovative airless spray delivers the clotting proteins fibrinogen andthrombin to stop bleeding when standard bleeding control techniques,

such as sutures, are impractical. The Ethicon Endo-Surgery (Ethicon; Cincin-nati, OH, USA; www.ethicon.com) Vistaseal Open and Laparoscopic dual ap-plicators (available in 35 cm and 45 cm lengths) combine biologics with de-vice technology to address mild to moderate surgical bleeding. The airlessspray products are the result of a broad partnership between Ethicon andplasma-derived medicine manufacturer Grifols (Barcelona, Spain). Thethrombin-catalyzed conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin consists of three re-versible steps, with thrombin being involved in only the first step, which is alimited proteolysis to release fibrinopeptides (FpA and FpB) from fibrinogento produce the fibrin monomer. In the second step, the fibrin monomers com-bine to form intermediate polymers through noncovalent interactions. In thethird and final step, the intermediate polymers aggregate to form the fibrinclot, which stems the bleed.

Vascular closure Device Seals Percutaneous entry Point

a n innovative closure device seals arterial puncture holes following per-cutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) catheter-based vascular proce-

dures. The Vasorum (Dublin, Ireland; http://vasorum.ie) Celt ACD is de-signed to close a femoral arteriotomy following intra-arterial procedures, suchas peripheral or coronary angiography, arterial stents, balloon angioplasty, anddiagnostic or interventional catheterization procedures involving the com-mon femoral artery.

Focal Laser Therapy Destroys breast Tumors

a minimally invasive procedure uses laser induced heat for focal destruc-tion of breast fibroadenomas and tumors of up to two centimeters in

size. During the procedure with the Novian Health (Chicago, Il, USA;https://novianhealth.com) Novilase Laser Therapy System ultrasound or x-ray image-guidance is used to insert the two small probes into and alongsidethe tumor. The laser probe delivers laser energy to provide focal thermal en-ergy, while the thermal probe monitors temperature at the edge of the de-sired ablation zone. Studies have shown that more than 90% of malignantbreast tumors are completely destroyed during one Novilase procedure, withpatients reporting better health-related quality of life outcomes compared tolumpectomy.

Integrated Technology Platform Improves Spine Surgery

a n innovative multiple technology operating room (OR) platform helpssurgeons adopt a more efficient and less disruptive minimally invasive

surgery (MIS) approach in all spine procedures. The NuVasive (San Diego,CA, USA; www.nuvasive.com) Pulse OR platform combines neuromonitor-ing, surgical planning, rod bending, radiation reduction, and imaging andnavigation functions to improve operative workflow, reduce variability andincrease surgical reproducibility. Independent device access allows OR staffto view the various technologies' imaging and insights, simultaneously and inreal time.

new catheter Simplifies Persistent AF cryoablation

a novel persistent atrial fibrillation (PsAF) cryoablation catheter that reliesmostly on anatomical markers eliminates the need for electromagnetic

mapping. The Adagio Medical (Laguna Hills, CA, USA; https://adagiomed-ical.com) One Shot+ cryoablation catheter is intended for pulmonary veinisolation (PVI) and other continuous ablation lesions of non-pulmonary-vein targets, using a transseptal procedure to create continuous and focaltransmural lesions on the left and right atrium. The catheter incorporatesdiagnostic electrodes for navigation to the ablation site and real-time mon-itoring of electrograms to confirm lesion creation and only requires a singletransseptal puncture to reach the targets in the left atrium.

Spinal Tether Device Treats Idiopathic Scoliosis

a n innovative spinal tether device corrects idiopathic scoliosis in chil-dren and adolescents who fail to respond to conservative treatment

options, such as external bracing. The Zimmer Biomet (Warsaw, IN, USA;www.zimmerbiomet.com) Tether vertebral body tethering (VBT) system isintended to provide an alternative to growing children and adolescentswith idiopathic scoliosis that do not respond to bracing, and whose spinalcurves are approaching or have reached the range where surgical treatmentis an option. The system includes anchors, vertebral body screws, andsetscrews made of titanium alloys that are placed into the same side of eachvertebra in the curved section of the spine through an incision on the sideof the chest. Idiopathic scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine whosecause is unknown. It is the most common spinal deformity in children, most often diagnosed between ages 10 to 18.

breakthrough coronary Sinus Device Improves Myocardial FunctionA novel intermittent occlusion device helps reduce infarct size and im-prove cardiac function following an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). TheMiracor Medical (Awans, Belgium; www.miracormedical.com) PiCSO Im-pulse System consists of a balloon tipped triple-lumen catheter and a driveconsole. The system and concomitant therapy is based on the fact thatcoronary sinus pressure increases when the vessel is occluded and drainageof venous blood into the right atrium is inhibited. As a result, during theocclusion period, normal right atrial blood pressure builds up to reach apressure plateau, without effecting systemic arterial pressure. The risecauses an increase in arterial wedge pressure over the ischemic area.

wound closure System Outperforms Staples and Sutures

a novel skin closure system reduces incision-related problems, providesgreater range of motion, reduces pain, and results in superior scar

quality. The ZipLine Medical (Campbell, CA, USA; www.stryker.com) Pre-placement RE-aligning LOw-tension Closure (PRELOC) system is a non-in-vasive and easy-to-use skin closure device that replaces sutures, staples, and glue for surgical incisions and lacerations. A breathable monofilm base, which is applied before the incision, facilitates re-approximation of incisionedges. Once the zipped tags are pulled, tension in the surrounding skin isbridged over and around the incision, resulting in a low-tension and uni-form distribution of closure forces, unlike point load forces typical of staplesand sutures. Since no skin piercing is involved, there is a reduced risk ofsurgical site infection (SSI) and needle stick injury.

Orthopedic Robotic System Facilitates external Fixation

a smart, robotic external fixation system addresses the two major chal-lenges facing physicians, patient compliance and lack of real-time

feedback. The OrthoSpin (Misgav, Israel; www.orthospin.com) AutoStrutsystem is an external fixator based on the DePuy Synthes (West Chester,PA, USA; www.jnjmedicaldevices.com MaxFrame multi axial correctionsystem, including all its parts and software; but with the six MaxFramestruts substituted by length-adjustable motor-powered AutoStruts. UsingMaxFrame 3D planning software, an accurate treatment plan is generatedvia advanced algorithms, eliminating the need for manual measurement, reducing procedural complexity, radiation exposure, overall costs, andtreatment time.

Rotatable Heart Valve Treats babies and Toddlers

a n innovative pediatric mechanical heart valve provides a new treat-ment option for newborns, infants, and toddlers in need of a mitral or

aortic valve replacement. The Abbott (Abbott Park, IL, USA; www.abbott.com) Masters HP 15mm rotatable mechanical bileaflet heart valve is de-signed to mimic the valve functions of a healthy heart, opening and closingwith each heartbeat and assuring proper blood flow. The valve, which can

be implanted in either the mitral or aortic position, includes pyrolytic car-bon leaflets and orifice rings that provide an 85 degree leaflet opening an-gle to reduces turbulence, and a controlled torque rotation mechanism forintraoperative adjustment. A sewing cuff contains additional suture mark-ers for more accurate placement.

3D-Printed Interbody Implants Facilitate bone Fusion

a n innovative portfolio of three-dimensional (3D) printed titanium in-terbody implants are designed to treat degenerative spine disease by

expediting fusion surgery. The DePuy Synthes (West Chester, PA, USA;www.jnjmedicaldevices.com) CONDUIT Interbody Platform with EIT Cel-lular Titanium Technology provides the fabricated structures with a poros-ity of 80%, which closely mimics the structure and modulus of elasticity ofnatural human cancellous bone. During the spinal fusion procedure, thedegenerated, collapsed disc is removed and replaced with a CONDUIT in-terbody spacer, along with a bone graft, with the intention of restoring nat-ural height and alignment between two adjacent vertebrae. The interbodyimplant is also prepared with roughened nanoscale surface features that tolead to increased adhesion of osteoblasts, compared to conventional titani-um materials. The end result is that the formerly mobile disc space be-tween the two vertebrae fuses into as a single, solid bone.

new Polymer Heart Valve Implanted in First Human Patient

N ext-generation implantable biopolymer heart valves last longer, arecheaper to manufacture and are more biocompatible than currently

available options. Developed at the California Institute of Technology (Cal-tech; Pasadena, USA; www.caltech.edu) and manufactured by Foldax (SaltLake City, UT, USA; https://foldax.com), the Tria heart valve combinesLifePolymer, an advanced biopolymer material, and a patented bioinspireddesign in order to create a heart valve capable of lasting for decades with-out calcification, risk of clotting, or damage to red blood cells (RBCs). Dur-ing testing, one valve has already lasted for 600 million cycles, the equiva-lent of around 15 years, without signs of significant wear and tear.

Implantable Duodenal Liner Improves Insulin Resistance

a new device that combines an intragastric balloon with a connectingsleeve mimics the effects of traditional bariatric surgery on people

with obesity and Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Developed at Sapienza University(Rome, Italy; www.uniroma1.it), Università Cattolica del S. Cuore (UCSC;Rome, Italy; www.unicatt.it), King’s College London (KCL; UK;www.kcl.ac.uk), and other institutions, the Sleeveballoon device consistsof an intra-gastric balloon with a central channel to allow passage of foodinto the proximal small bowel, which is then covered by a sleeve that ex-tends into the duodenum and proximal jejunum. This reduces gastric vol-ume by 2/3, while the sleeve bypasses the proximal small bowel, deliver-ing food directly to the mid-jejunum. The device is intended for use for aperiod of 12-18 months.

Smart navigation Systems Optimize Total Hip Arthroplasty

t he combination of two surgeon-controlled surgical planning and guid-ance platforms optimizes the treatment of total hip arthroplasty (THA)

procedures. FDA to establish Oversight Rules for AI in Medicine

t he US Food and Drug Administration (FDA; Silver Spring, MD, USA;www.fda.gov) is developing a framework for regulating artificial intelli-

gence (AI) products used in medicine that continually adapt based on newdata. In a white paper published in March 2019, the FDA details the criteriathe agency proposes for rules that will be used to determine when and ifmedical products that rely on AI will require FDA review before being com-mercialized. The FDA review may include examination of the underlyingperformance of a product’s algorithms, a manufacturer’s plan to make modi-fications, and the manufacturer’s ability to manage the risks associated withany modifications.

Drone Delivery System Transports Samples between Hospitals

S wiss Post (Bern, Switzerland; www.post.ch) is laying out a drone deliv-ery system to convey laboratory samples between hospitals that will ar-

rive function twice as fast as road transport. A pilot study, carried out in col-laboration with the Federal Office of Civil Aviation, Skyguide, which moni-tors Swiss airspace, and local authorities, will use the drones to transport

urine and blood samples five to ten times a day between University HospitalZürich (USZ; Switzerland; www.en.usz.ch) and the USZ Irchel campus, which are 2.5 kilometers apart. The time savings are expected to help pa-tients, for example those under anesthesia, waiting for laboratory results.

Facial Recognition continuously Monitors IcU Patients

a new study evaluates an automated system that uses facial recognitiontechnology to continuously monitor the safety of patients admitted to

the intensive care unit (ICU). Developed by researchers at Yokohama CityUniversity (Japan; www.yokohama-cu.ac.jp), the system uses ceiling-mount-ed cameras placed above the patients' beds. After collecting about 300 hoursof daytime image data of patients facing the camera in body positions thatshowed their face and eyes clearly, 99 images were subject to a machine-learning (ML) algorithm to analyze them. Based on input from the observa-tional data, especially from around the subject's face, the ML algorithmlearned to identify potential high-risk behavior in a process that resembles theway a human brain learns new information.

Augmented Reality Perceives Real-Time Pain of Patients

a novel augmented reality (AR) platform combines visualization with neu-roimaging to help clinicians map patient pain in real-time. Developed at

the University of Michigan (U-M; Ann Arbor, USA; https://umich.edu), theportable clinical augmented reality and artificial intelligence (CLARAi) isbased on a sensor-outfitted cap that detects changes to blood flow and oxy-genation using functional near-infrared (nIR) spectroscopy. The data is decod-ed using a neural network (NN) algorithm to classify the hemodynamic re-sponse data into color-coded pain and no-pain brain states. At the same time, clinicians wear a Microsoft HoloLens AR glasses, which allows them to viewbrain activity in real time on a reconstructed brain template, while the sub-jects sit in a clinical chair.
