Program Components• Academic sessions facilitated by Hanze University faculty members, as well as guest faculty and speakers from partner institu-

tions and the local business community; • Professional site visits to some of the largest European companies in Groningen, Amsterdam and Germany; • Cross-cultural activities will include visits to various historical and cultural sites, as well as exposure to European corporate

About Groningen, the Netherlands and Hanze University of Applied SciencesGroningen (http://www.cityoftalent.nl/en) is the most northern city in the Netherlands and is known as “little Amsterdam” for its canal lined streets, and historical architecture. It is a popular and vibrant student town with 50,000 Dutch and international stu-dents studying at the Hanze University (http://www.hanze.nl/home/International) and the University of Groningen. Groningen has the most bicycles per capita in the Netherlands and is an important European knowledge centre on business and energy. Groningen is a 3 hour train ride from Amsterdam’s Schipol airport. Most people in Groningen speak English, and the language for the program will be English. Canadians are well regarded in the Neth-erlands, especially because the Canadian army liberated Holland from Nazi Germany in 1945 and subsequently invited many Dutch citizens to immigrate to Canada, including many who have settled in Nova Scotia. NSCC first partnered with Hanze in 2010 on a Canada/EU student mobility project “Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment”. This relationship grew into several opportunities for students and faculty of both institutions including summer programs, semester exchanges and internship placements. The 2015 Doing Business in Europe summer school will be the fifth consecutive year NSCC has participated in this program.

Learning Outcomes

• To develop and refine the skills needed to prepare for and participate in an international learning experience includ-ing research, organization, risk management, teamwork, interpersonal communication and cultural competence and sensitivity.

• To learn about the business environment and practices in Europe and how it compares to the Canadian context.

• To identify and reflect on the differences and similarities between Canada and the Netherlands.

The overall goals of the program are to prepare the students for their second year experience at NSCC and to increase the students’ employability following their graduation from NSCC. Please note that preference will be given to applications from first year students.
