Presentation Intent This web‐based lecture by BID Faculty Brandy von Kaenel, highlights career options and paths for interior design students both during their educational careers and post‐graduation. 

The presentation will highlight her own professional design career path as an example as to possibilities to students as emerging professionals. 

Additionally,  tips on how to narrow in and focus efforts now as students both during course‐workand in the field, towards your own field related design interests will be discussed.

Project Statement/ Concept:

Greensburg was devastated by an  F5 tornado in 2007 and the entire  town is currently being rebuilt from  the ground up. The city officials  decided to rebuild it entirely green ‐focusing on economic, social and  environmental sustainability. We  traveled to Kansas to meet with the  community, Greensburg Greentown  leaders, and to conduct a sitevisit. Our end design concepts  were focused on creation of acomfortable, sustainable and  adaptable environment.

Project Features:

Some of the sustainable features in the  design were: On‐site renewable  energy in the form of wind pods taking  advantage of the high Kansas winds,  Advanced Framing, ADA features,  flexible spaces and movable custom  furniture, Energy Star appliances, eco‐friendly finishes and building materials,  solar shading devices and passive solar  design strategies, pervious paving with  an integrated native eco‐system, a high  velocity HVAC system, low flush toilets  and a tank‐less water heater. In  addition, the creation of wind‐sheltered outdoor rooms as extensions  of the interior environment, helped to  create useable outdoor spaces that are  usually rarities in this geographical  location.

This project involved the developmentof a 50,000 sq. ft. campus for a new Kthrough 8th grade expeditionarylearning school which embracedoutward bound principles. The 6.67acre site is located in the Stapletonneighborhood in Denver, CO at theintersection of Willow St. and CentralPark Blvd. This site is home to the 1959historic structure Hangar 61. Themodern building is made of concreteand once housed a corporate plane forthe Ideal Basic Cement Co. Is is nowlisted as a landmark. The schoolprogram included classrooms,administration, teachers lounge, music,literature, art and math classrooms,climbing wall space and a ropes course,kitchen and lunchroom, gymnasium,sports amenities, adventure gear,storage playgrounds, communitygardens, running track, outdoortheatre, auditorium and a library.

Concept: Transformation

MastersDegreeProjectExpeditionary Learning  FacilityStapleton‐ Denver,COProject Concept:The design drivers for this project center  around transformation process as it  connects to the outward bound principles.  Transformation occurs through our  experiences within experience of the  natural world, with ourselves and our  community. The project embraces and  celebrate this journey of growth and  "metamorphosis" within each child through  architecture and learning landscapes,  providing places that foster learning,  exploration, adventure, reflection,  collaboration and creativity.

This project involved the development  of a building, site and interior design  for a public Japanese Tea House in a  Denver park. This involved pre‐design  research on the Japanese tea  ceremony and culture along with a site  analysis. Also, incorporating a 20th  Century Modern style was required.

Project Concept:The concept and program was  developed relating to a ceremonial  progression to and inside the  structure. I worked at resolving privacy  issues, and integrated both function  and aesthetics. I included the idea of  “wabi‐sabi” ‐‐beauty through  imperfection. I learned that some of  the most dynamic spaces are thosethat are “in‐between” others, similar to  dramatic pauses in music.
