Workplace represents a great part of our lives. We are living in an era of dramatic changes that are impacting businesses, cities and human experiences. Technology is playing one of the bigger roles in our daily life, since it has become ubiquitous in places of work and leisure and embedded in our buildings and cities. Is not only affecting how we live but is also disrupting traditional business practices.
The interaction between new technologies and the workplace raise interesting questions that are of our concern. Work as we know it is changing with these advances, privacy, collaboration, and employees’ wellbeing may be affected.
IntroductionTypology: Workplace
As mentioned before in the introduction, our adult life is composed mostly of activities that are related to work. The evolution of technology has made easier to have more and better access to the information, thus, making possible new work modes that not necessarily are based in a fixed location. The constant evolution of the workplace demands new researches and innovation in order to keep up with the requirements of the workforce.
Our research objectives are:• Analyze the influence of new technologies in the workplace.
• Identify and provide solutions for issues related with privacy, collaboration, and wellbeing.
• Define the role of Interior Design in fostering employee staisfaction and wellbeing.
• Propose solutions that take into consideration future changes in the workplace.
Problem Statement & Objectives
Central Question How can the design of the interior environment adapt to the new advances in technology that foster collaboration, privacy, and the wellbeing and satisfaction of employees in the workplace environment?
Sub-Questions1. How are new technology advances affecting the way we work?
2. How are privacy and collaboration affected by the use of mobile technology in the workplace?
3. How can design help achieve the right balance between privacy and collaboration in the workplace environment?
4. What is wellbeing?
5. How can interior design foster an increase in employee satisfaction and wellbeing in the workplace?
Research Questions
Research Outcomes• The way we work is shifting
drastically thanks to the continuing advances in technology. This progress has changed the environment where we work, the composition and classification of the workforce, and how they develop skills around digital environments.
• Mobile technology has permitted people the possibility to choose how, when, and where they want to work. The environment has the potential to affect the performance of the workers, natural light for example is directly related with increase in performance.
• Collaboration and privacy are very important when it comes to flexible workplace. A good balance between privacy and collaboration is necesary for wellbeing and employee satisfaction.
• Wellbeing rather than a quality is a holistic outlook that acts both at a personal and collective level. The environment is a key element affecting wellbeing of employees.
• Activity based workplace or open office concept are becoming popular thanks to advances in technology. Office work is becoming more mobile which organizations to use space more efficiently.
• Ability to choose where to work has been proved to offer outstanding results enhancing feelings of wellbeing. Switching workplaces places during the week may increase wellbeing of employees
