About the Book:
A journey to the Centre of the Earth is a novel written by Jules Verne in 1864. It tells the story of
Professor Lidenbrock, who is convinced that there are volcanic tubes that goes towards the
centre of the earth. His expedition includes his nephew Axel and the guide Hans and during their
adventures, they come across prehistoric creatures and natural hazards until eventually comingback up to the surface again in southern Italy.
This book was written during the time of when exploration to unknown lands was popular, in
particular the insights of Africa, the geographical and magnetic poles as well as Central and
South America were little known by Europeans. Famous explorers like Sir Richard Bunton and
Henry Morton Stanley and David Linvingston were exploring the earths surface which this has
inspired Verne to create counterparts of these famous people into Professor Lidenbrock and
Axel who explores below the earths surface. The whole evolution history also inspired Verne,
like the likes of Charles Darwin and Charles Lyell's Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man
1863, which looks at the history of prehistoric man with dinosaurs, prehistoric man and theearly life on earth, which also during that time the idea of religious beliefs and historic facts
started to become an issue so using these time periods, Verne was able to put them into
chronological order and made it into a story.
Because of the books success there have been many adaptations to the book, with four film
adaptations, the earliest being made in 1959 and the latest is the remake made in 2008 but is
followed as a sequel to the book. The book also made other media based adaptations, mostly TV
dating from 1967 to 2007 (including an animated adaption of this in 1967), a theatre
performance, video games and thrill rides.

Artist Links:
James Clyne:
James Clyne is a concept artist currently designing for a film industry; he has drawn works like X-
men, the fountain, and many others as well as working with well known film companies likeSony, DreamWorks Studios and Universal. His works mostly consists of transportation design,
product design and entertainment design.
Ive chosen him as one of my artist influence links because of the use of strong vibrant colours
and the soft painting that are in his images. I also like the way he has used the brush effects to
create the trees, vines to create the sense of realism but in a fantasy world. The use of
perspective also helps give the image some space.

Mark Goerner:
Mark Goerner is a conceptual artist who designs mostly space, industrial, futuristic fantasy
environment and transportation concept designs. He too has worked with famous film
companies like Universal, creating concept art for X-men films, Warner Bros for Superman and
Constantine and many more.
I chose Goerner as one of my artist influence links because of his soft paintings to create a
smooth, delicate effect using natural faded colours like the cream coloured architecture on
them as well. The use of light and shadows in his work is defined through strong shades of
colour like the lava and the woods image.

Raymond Swanland:
Raymond Swanland is a concept artist who creates concept arts mostly for mythical creatures,
robots and dinosaurs though he has also worked in film and game industries, most notably the
Magic of the gathering and Oddworld games.
Swanland is one of my chosen artist links because of the drama and hype that is created within
the painting, such as strong paint strokes like in the alien image, and how the waves are drawn
to make it look dynamic. The use of layers and perspective helps add in the atmosphere and
action within these images.

Visual Concept:
The visual concept in the story is adventure-based, which the story also looks at the prehistoric
era of creatures and plant life developments as well as natural dangers. So for my final
outcomes, I have researched living things in different time eras including surroundings like caves,
the seashores to help me get a better perspective of those times.
Ive decided to draw the final concepts in the style similar to Indiana Jones and the style of the
Alice in Wonderlands, where journey to the fantasy is new. The Indiana Jones is mostly to look
at the adventure ideas of caves and others, as for Alice in Wonderland is set with the idea of
out of the ordinary and without the gothic madness look in the film.

Key Thumbnails: Extract 1- Cave
I like the idea of having a tunnel at the end of the distance with glowing lights, lava and lots of
cave pillars on the inside as they question the viewer and make them want to know more, like
my creative partner says, the distant door gives the idea of whats in there? Are there creatures?
Are there more colours? Though drawing hot and cold things in one area is quite difficult but Ihope that in my final outcome I can resolve this.

Key Thumbnails: Extract 2- The shore/ land of mushrooms.
I liked the idea of large mushrooms in a forest seen from the island from the other side. Though
Im not sure whether to keep the idea of the forest being seen from the other side as this
makes perception difficult in having to areas together but split apart by the sea. I quite like the
top left image as it depicts both the shore and the forest in brigt colours, having bright colouredmushrooms also depicts the tropical-ness of the unknown land.

Similar to extract 2, the story explains how to the travelers went back to the place they left, see
the same scenery again but with some extra detail like prehistoric creatures bones, ancient soil,
raft on the shore and even a granite cave. I like the idea of the perspective being view from the
inside of the cave looking out as it gives out the idea of theres something more outsideespecially the bottom left and right images.

Written Assignment:
This essay analyses the production design and the visual concepts of Robert Wienes The
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920). The essay looks in depth at the works behind making the film,
Hermann Warm, Walter Riemann, and Walter Rhrig notably for its famous German
Expressionism as well as how the style of German Expressionism has inspired other film makers,
notably Tim Burton by looking at his animated film, The Nightmare before Christmas (1993)and

Stitch:Hey Joey, Apreciate the Introduction on my blog. Orlando was lovely, I'm missing it
already. Discovered a few nice little things to use for this project so I'd be happy to share if your
interested. Regarding your chosen Folder congrats, not a big book reader so anything I can give
you on its content is speculatory. But I may have seen a Brenden Fraser film before not sure if its
the same thing. The imagery was epic... cant wait to see what you bring to this story :)
Stitch:Hey Jo, I really like these drawings, very detailed for 2 minute mock ups. The detail in your
30 minute ones is also very nice. The use of perspective lines is also vital for this kind of work, I
can see you experimenting with line implements very nice. All round very nice
Stitch: Hey Jo, Got a few pointers here, I like the influence maps very well thought out. What is
bugging me is I have no extracts to compare it to. Could you possibly provide a little detail to
your chosen scene here. Even if its a title like "The Murky Cave" - W/E it gives me a little more
dimension to your chosen setting. Providing as Phil would put it a little "context". Haha other
then that :) good stuuuuf!
Stitch: Hey Jo, Sketch to expanded sketch, effective method of presentation. Your sketch is a
little pale would be nice to see the sketch lines a little more. You can bump that up with levels inadjustments - levels. Works wonders for all sketch lines. The colour concepts are nice, story
boarded lines well placed. Again though, there are no chosen names, context, etc. I know whats
in the scene but I cannot bond an attachment without knowing why - where is this in the book,
etc. Add that & the concept will jump and be much more thought provoking. Love it though,
looks like you are enjoying your concept and that is important :)

in years! What did yous do in Orlando? Hope you've taken lots of good pictures! Yeah Sure! I'm
up for new stuff and anything that'll help us both with the projects would be great! Also if there's
thingys to use for this project, I'd be happy to share if you're interested too.
haha thanks, not a big book reader myself either but anything would be really helpful. I haven't
read the book nor the film before so its kinda just taking some keywords from the extracts and
just doodle. Think the Brendan Fraser one is on the same book but slightly a follow up to it?

Joey: Hey Stitch, That is one scary taskboard you've got there!!! I've changed my taskboard
similar to yours as it looks way better than my old one and am trying to get used to this routine
since my last one didn't quite work out well.
The Never Ending story is such a good one, haven't read the book but watched the film before. It
quite links to The Spiderwick Chronicles, Narnia, The dark crystal, Labyrinth and The seeker: The
Dark is Rising because of the weird fantasy style so they're worth checking out. Hope they
help!! :D Looking forward to see your first thumbnails!!

especially Stars Ward!! whoops!! haha
I really like your 2 mins ones, especially the third one on the top row, very well proportioned. The
butt and the legs are improving as well but Keep it up!!
I see what you mean about the negative space thingy, but as what Chris says to me drawing
faint measurement lines is a common way of approaching this but do try and draw without them.
Oh and try to avoid joining lines in between shapes like your 4th pic where she's sitting on a chair.
Apart from all that, its all looking really good!!! :D
Joey:Hey Stitch,I really like your approach of Disney- surreal twist as your influences, makes it
more exciting to see your thumbnails!! Speaking of Disney twists, Kingdom hearts also containsstuff of what you're aiming for. A lot of its world areas contain a light and dark twist in them.

Stitch:Hey Joe, Much more what I was talking about, very nice to get the general idea of your
extracts. Now I have something to attach to those nice thumbs you have been knocking up :)
Way to go :P
Stitch:Rock art eh, best place to check for resources there is generally deviantart.com - went
there for some stuff when I wasdoing a comic unit in my old course... Just a suggestion. I have some nice rock textures you can
use if you want aswell... got a library of natural textures including grass :) Lemme know if you
want them :) nice stuff Joe
Stitch:Hey Joe, I have to say these thumbs are nice and much nicer now that I can see the lines :)
Cant help it I just love line art. I personally think number 1 is a good direction to take this
concept... the use of the distant door plays on the mind... Whats in there? Are there creatures?
Are there more colours? You will also want to include some heat embers, especially if you are
near lava. I can show you what I mean next week should give you the idea :) Keep it up Joe ;)
Stitch:Gotta agree with Phil here, your concept style is coming on leaps and bounds Joe, keep
raising that confidence meter :) I like that you are flipping it to view any small anomoles nice to
see you thinking about these details. Glad you have gone with the distant door, I love the
questions the suggestion of this door makes me ask... I kind of want to read the book now. :)

Stitch:You hit the nail on the head with the last image, definatly what Chris was after. Wish I
could say the same about mine, only just began to grasp the idea before we were done. Again I
love the confidence of your minature 2 minute sketches... good detail for so little time Nice Joe
Stitch:Radiance, nice idea one cannot help but notice though that you are going out of yourremit a little with all these mind maps. I don't think you want to push yourself too thin because
you are not going to be viewing all of these for your final concept. It's just my thought but good
images non the less :)
Stitch:Hey Joe, I think you should combine all of these maps to create one finalised map. This
will summarise everything and will be more useful then lots of different influence maps. I believe
this will help you keep stock of what you want without stretching yourself too far :) Just an idea :)
Stitch:Hey Joe, This is very nice, lots of analogy of everything. Tree, rock, very nice to see you
branching into the tiny details that can believe it or not make or break the image. Your flowers
are nice and brilliantly lit, nice to see you getting the most from those lovely dark vs light levels :)

Stitch:Hey Joe, I have to say I love the extracts at the top very nice they just need some colour
variance... Maybe a gradient map - I can show you how to do that if you want will allow you to
multi colour the sky rather easily. - Only if you want to. Regarding the lower extract... yeah its a
bit empty... You need more depth for the emptyness (ie. sea has many shades as does the sky).

The scene wont appear so empty if you add a variety of colour to this scene trust me :) Other
then that your definatly coming along here, I'm liking what I'm seeing :) Good stuffffff!!

Joey:Hey Stitch, yeah, I dont know what I did on Photoshop but the colours gone a bit off-
coloured but if you don't mind can you show me how to work the gradient map? Hmm yeah I see
what you mean on the lower ones, but they're just done quickly but will try and get them all
coloured properly if I have some free time.
