IMCC Newsletter 23 Friday, 5 th August 2016 Interhouse Athletics Carnival Friday, 29 th July was a momentous day at the College with the running of the Interhouse Athletics Carnival. The elements were seemingly against us, rain was forecast, wind was blowing 30 knots from the north and the temperature was cold. However, this worked in favour of the 100m runners and javelin throwers setting five school records including the fastest ever time for the 100m and furthest ever javelin thrown. House Spirit was at an all-time high, with each house donning hairspray, costumes and head bands. The Carnival aims to maximise participation, allowing students to participate in a supportive and motivating environment. A huge thank you to parents, families and friends who came down to support, as well as Miss Karoline Lewy, Head of Sport and the staff who helped make the day a success, but most importantly to the students who put in their best efforts for their Houses. Congratulations to Golding House for convincingly winning the Carnival, and to the students who won individual champion’s medals or broke records. 2016 Winter Appeal

This time of year brings many challenges to families who are facing difficulties. Feeding the family and keeping them warm and healthy during the cold winter months can sometimes prove too much. Many families turn to wonderfully supportive agencies like ‘The ShopFront’ and “MercyCare’ to provide them with assistance to make it through. Similar to last year’s super successful efforts, the Appeal will run over three weeks with a particular focus each week. This year we are going to ‘target’ our donations to the needs of the clients that present at The ShopFront. For that reason each House Group in each Year level has been allocated a particular ‘food group’. Please see the poster included in this week’s McCormack Messenger for further details. Thank you in advance for your generosity in supporting this important College initiative.

Catholic Performing Arts Festival What an amazing start we have had at the Catholic Performing Arts Festival! This week saw a number of performances held around Perth. Starting the week the Brass Ensemble performed at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre, Thornlie. After a long drive the trio took to the stage to perform a brassy version of The Sugarplum Fairy. A highlight of the week was the evening performances from the Years 9, 10 and 12 Rock Bands at Corpus Christi College in Bateman. Each group put on a show to remember. The energy on stage was electrifying and from the reaction of the audience, they were really enjoying it. This performance was a special occasion for the students in the Year 12 Rock Band who have been performing together at this event since Year 7. They really did own the show.

Percussion Ensemble also performed at Trinity College, East Perth this week. This performance was an exciting one to watch, incorporating many household items from chopping boards to tea cups. It goes to show you can make music out of anything! Best of luck to all students in their performances over the coming weeks.

Congratulations to the students who achieved awards in their performance at the Festival last week. Certificate of Merit Flute Ensemble Harrison Hill (Vocal Solo) Elizabeth Rowston (Vocal Solo) Ashley Brown (Vocal Solo) Sophie Wilkinson (Vocal Solo) Honourable Mention Naomi Capon (Vocal Solo)

Dance Catholic Performing Arts Festival On Thursday, 4th August four Year 11 students performed at this year’s Catholic Performing Arts Festival in the Liturgical Dance section. Braidy Allen, Courtney Dales, Emilee Erikson and Zarlie Stubbs travelled to Mercy College this week to perform their dance Temptation and Sin, choreographed by themselves. The piece explores the temptations we feel in our everyday lives to turn away from God and when we do, the idea that God will welcome us back with open arms when we ask for forgiveness. This is the first year that IMCC has participated in the Liturgical Dance section and I would like to congratulate the girls on their creative and mature choreography and performance.

Vocational Education - Work Learning Program As a student, work experience is one of the most valuable activities available to support your career development. It allows students time at a workplace to learn about an occupation or industry. Students may observe others at their job, have a go themselves or do a combination of watching and doing. It is an opportunity to develop skills and networks, learn about the world of work and to decide what kinds of things students would like to do. Work experience has many benefits for students:

Knowledge of what a job involves.

Structured, supervised, hands-on experience.

Skills that will be recognised in other workplaces.

Confidence in your ability to learn and master new skills and tasks.

Work–life skills, such as communicating well or working in teams.

A chance to demonstrate how students can contribute in a work environment.

An understanding of the world of work.

An opportunity to demonstrate commitment and reliability.

A new referee to add to resumes.

An employment opportunity. https://myfuture.edu.au/career-insight/the-benefits-of-work-experience-for-students

When Year 11 and 12 students enrol in Career and Enterprise General they are given the option to participate in the Workplace Learning Program to complete work experience in two industries/workplaces one day a week.

For more information on our Workplace Learning Program or if business/workplace owners are interested in being a Host Employer for our students, please contact [email protected] Ms Erin Gallen, Vocational Education Coordinator . Ms Erin Gallen Vocation Education Coordinator

Year 10 Boys Soccer through to last 16 in the State The Year 10 Soccer Academy Boys represented IMCC in the School Sports WA Soccer’s Intermediate Competition for Year 9 and 10 players. They were drawn against Balga Senior High School, a traditionally strong soccer school. The game started well with Ewan Brazier making a weaving run and converting a one-on-one with the goal keeper for a 1-0 IMCC lead. Shortly after, Ewan (while lying on the ground) flicked the ball up to Jayden Scales who put it over the head of the keeper from the edge of the box to make it 2-0. Unfortunately, all of IMCC’s hard work came undone during the last 10 minutes of the first half when defensive errors led to Balga scoring twice, making the score 2-2 at half time. With the pressure on, IMCC responded in the second half and with only 3 minutes gone Ewan Brazier was brought down in the box and the Balga player shown a straight red card. Kian McGuigan stepped up and converted the penalty and IMCC again led the game. Although IMCC dominated the second half, they found scoring the next goal a little more difficult and the boys took about 20 minutes to find the net again, with Ewan scoring his second goal. The last kick of the game was by Jayden Scales when he hit a swerving, dipping shot from outside the box to make the final score 5-2 in IMCC’s favour. The Year 10 Boys are into the last 16 teams in the state and will need to lift their intensity and focus in their next game, which will probably be in Week 4. Congratulations boys and good luck in your next match. Mr Damian Stefanoff Soccer Academy Coordinator

Year 8/9 Boys Football Academy The Year 8/9 Boys Football Academy Team played a hard game but lost to John XXIII in the Eagles Cup State Quarter Finals on Thursday, 4th August at Claremont Showgrounds. The boys have played a good brand of football all year, running in support and using the fat side of the ground to their advantage, but unfortunately today didn’t secure a win against a very skilled team. Congratulations for taking out the West Perth District Championship for the first time in the College’s history. The Year 8/9 Girls Football Academy has played their first two rounds, the scores were: IMCC A defeated Butler College 3.6 – 24 to 0.1 – 1 IMCC B lost to Kinross College 5.1 – 31 to 6.5 – 41 IMCC A defeated Kinross College 9.13 – 67 to 1.1 – 7 IMCC B forfeit by Butler College 8.2 – 50 to 0.0 – 0
