• The recorded history of Texas beginswith the arrival of the first Spanishconquistadors in the region of NorthAmerica now known as Texas in 1519,who found the region populated bynumerous Native American / Indiantribes. During the period of recordedhistory from A.D. 1519 to 1848, all orparts of Texas were claimed by fivecountries: France, Spain, Mexico, theRepublic of Texas, the United States ofAmerica—as well as the secessionistConfederate States of America in 1861–1865, during the American Civil War.

• The culture of Texas can at face value be described as a melting potof "Southern" and "Southwestern" features, with pockets of ethnicgroup town and settlements in many locations. As one of theSouthern states, Texas has long been influenced by Southernculture. Although South Texas and West Texas have largely lostdefining features of southern culture such as southern accents andsouthern food, southern culture remains prominent in CentralTexas, North Texas and parts of rural East Texas. Rodeo

• Rodeo is the official sport of Texas.The annual Houston LivestockShow and Rodeo is the world'slargest known rodeo. It is held over20 days from late February throughearly March. The event begins withtrail rides that originate fromseveral points throughout thestate, all of which convene atReliant Park for a barbecue cook-off. The rodeo includes typicalrodeo events, as well as concertperformances from major artistsand carnival rides.

• The big State Fair of Texas, one of the largest state fairs in the United States byattendance, is held in Dallas each year between late September through mid- tolate October at Fair Park.
