Seven marketing sinsImpatient... great marketing takes time. Doing it wrong (and rushed) ten times costs much more and takes longer than doing it slowly, but right, over the same period of time.
Selfish... we have a choice, and if we sense that this is all about you, not us, our choice will be to go somewhere else.
Self-absorbed... you don’t buy from you, others buy from you. They don’t care about your business and your troubles nearly as much as you do.
Deceitful... see selfish, above. If you don’t tell us the truth, it’s probably because you’re selfish. How urgent can your needs be that you would sacrifice your future to get something now?
Inconsistent... we’re not paying that much attention, but when we do, it helps if you are similar to the voice we heard from last time.
Angry... at us? Why are you angry at us? It’s not something we want to be part of, thanks.
Jealous... is someone doing better than you? Of course they are. There’s always someone doing better than you. But if you let your jealousy change your products or your attitude or your story, we’re going to leave.
Of course, they’re not marketing sins, they’re human failings.
Humility, empathy, generosity, patience and kindness, combined with the arrogance of the brilliant inventor, are a potent alterna-tive.
Businesses are managed by people. They might be owners or employees with the title of President or CEO who then report to the owners or a Board of Directors. These owners or CEO’s man-age the company. They set the goals, the standards, and define expectations for staff performance and company performance. But some businesses are managed at a higher level by the Purpose or Mission of the company. The lead manager, no matter whether their title is “Owner,” “CEO,” or “President” is subservient to the Purpose or Mission of the company. If that Purpose or Mission is appropriate and clear to everyone who works there then it becomes much easier to manage when compared to a business without that clarity of purpose. When the Purpose of the company governs the sales force, customer service, marketing, hiring, training, policies, guarantees, and the quality of product(s) and service(s) everything becomes so much easier. There is less ambiguity in that gray area between right or wrong. There is far less of a “good enough” mentality. There is more integrity at every level of the company. It is easier for the sales staff to establish credibility when making a sales presentation or the production staff to deliver quality because credibility and quality are well defined by the Purpose or Mission. Contrast the Purpose-Driven company with one where manage-ment is defined by expediency or an executive who says, “because I said so.” Businesses managed this way can become fiefdoms,
with ego-centered decisions, and a greater amount of internal politics. In a Purpose-Driven company, it is the “Purpose” that sets the standards, the goals, the way customers are treated, the way employees are treated, and the career paths that are available. The executives, managers, supervisors, and staff are all there to carry out the Purpose. The Purpose-Driven company starts by asking the question, “What do we stand for?” Once that is defined, everything flows from that statement. It supports everything and everybody in the company. In an ideal world, Purpose-Driven companies become almost self-governing based on the higher principles
