A two day excursion into the heart of the main Australian involvement in the Vietnam conflict that is designed to unlock and release past memories and to reveal the new life and vibrancy that now prevails.

Day 1 - Saigon - Nui Dat - Vung TauDepart Saigon this morning with your guide and travel by road to the first stop, the site of the former Nui Dat Task Force base. Little remains of the vast camp except the columns of the main gate. The former runway is now a wide street in the local village and what was the heli-pad is now a soccer field. A kindergarten established by Australian veterans is nearby. Pause to reflect at the Long Tan Cross before continuing on to the Long Phuoc Tunnels. Later, drive past the location of the Horseshoe (access not permitted these days due to mining activity) and visit Minh Dam (no longer the ‘Secret Zone’) and Long Hai. Continue on into Vung Tau. A

large antenna is still visible on ‘Radar Hill’. Stay overnight in Vung Tau.

Day 2 - Vung Tau - Saigon Vung Tau sightseeing includes Back Beach - the site of an Australian logistics group and the Peter Badcoe Club (nothing remains at all). The area is now dominated by a massive war memorial. Also visit Front Beach areas, Bao Dai Summer House, the airport area (many will remember as the home of ‘Wallaby Airlines’ and our ‘hueys’), the ever bustling town centre and the market area. Return to Saigon with your guide this afternoon. Visit Ba Ria Market en route. (B)

Immerse yourself in rural life in the “rice bowl” of Vietnam, surrounded by verdant rice paddies, winding canals, and lush vegetation.

Day 1 - Saigon - Cai Be - Can Tho Leave Saigon early for the 3 hour guided drive to Cai Be. By motor boat visit the colourful floating market and stop to see some cottage industries producing rice paper and pop corn cakes. Cruise along by boat towards Vinh Long province, winding through the small shady canals. Step ashore to see a musical show depicting Mekong cultural life, and visit some local farm gardens. Travel on to Can Tho by car. Stay overnight in Can Tho. (L)

Day 2 - Can Tho - Saigon Another early start, this time to cruise to the large floating market at Cai Rang with traders busily bargaining and exchanging goods on their colourful boats. Visit a noodle factory. Leave the boat at Cai Rang and travel back to Saigon by road, stopping at My Tho for lunch. Arrive Saigon early afternoon. (B,L)
