Multimedia

The notion of MultimediaConsists of two words:Multi = many; much; Medium = An intervening substance through

which something is transmitted or carried on.

“Multimedia can be any combination of text, graphics, sound, animation and video, to effectively communicate ideas to users delivered by computer or any other electronic devices.”

• “Multimedia is the presentation of a (usually interactive) computer application, incorporating media elements such as text, graphics, video, animation and sound on computer.” - Stephen McGloughlin

• Multimedia is usually recorded & played, displayed or accessed by computerized and electronic devices, but can also be part of a live performance.

• Multimedia also describes electronic media devices used to store and experience multimedia content.

Why multimedia?

• Based on Edgar Dale (Cone Of Learning), on average, people remember:

• 10% of what they read,• 20% of what they hear,• 30% of what they see, • 50% of what they hear and see,

multimedia approach

• Multimedia rich elements, multi-sensory delivery system can facilitate greater retention of new knowledge.

Characteristics of Multimedia

A Multimedia system has four basic characteristics:

–Multimedia systems must be computer controlled.

–Multimedia systems are integrated. – The information they handle must be

represented digitally. – The interface to the final presentation of

media is usually interactive.

Types of Multimedia

Linear Multimedia

– Users have very little control over the presentation.

–When it is not interactive and the users

just sit and watch.

– The presentation normally plays from the start to end or even loops continually to present the information.

– E.g. A movie is a common type of linear multimedia

Nonlinear/Interactive Multimedia

–Users dictate the flow of delivery.

–User control the flow of the show.

–The users control the delivery of elements to control the what and when.

–Users have the ability to move around or follow different path through the information presentation.

–e.g., computer game, computer-based training, information archive (encyclopedia).

Applications of Multimedia

• Multimedia finds its application in various areas, a few are:– Education

• Computer-based trainings, reference e-books, documents imaging, distant learning.

– Entertainment• Interactive games

– Medicine• Training to doctors through virtual surgery

– Business• Employee training, advertisements, customer

support, selling products.– Arts

• Art exhibitions, literature presentations– Scientific Research

• Modeling and simulations

VIRTUAL REALITY

Virtual reality (VR) is a term that applies to computer-simulated environments that can simulate physical presence in places in the real world, as well as in imaginary worlds.

Or

“A computer generated, immersive (or wide field), multi-sensory information program which tracks a user in real time.”

Page 12: Interactive multimedia and virtual reality

• Virtual reality is often used to describe a wide variety of applications commonly associated with immersive, highly visual, 3D environments. The development of CAD software, graphics hardware acceleration, head mounted displays, database gloves, and miniaturization have helped popularize the notion.

• VR consists of a computer-generated, multi-dimensional environment and interface tools that allow users to:

1)immerse themselves in the environment,

2) navigate within the environment, and

3) interact with objects and other inhabitants in the environment.

APPLICATION

The usage of VR in a training perspective is to allow professionals to conduct training in a virtual environment where they can improve upon their skills without the consequence of failing the operation.

• VR plays an important role in combat training for the military. It allows the recruits to train under a controlled environment where they are to respond to different types of combat situations.

• Virtual reality is quickly finding wide acceptance in the medical community as researchers and clinicians alike become aware of its potential benefits.

• Several pioneer research groups have already

demonstrated improved clinical performance using VR imaging, planning and control techniques.
