PROGRAMMEINTRODUCTIONInternational students who wish to enroll in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements as listed below:

- IELTS ( International English Language Testing Scheme score of 5.5 or- TOEFL ( Test of English as Foreign Language) score of 550 or- CBT ( computer-based TOEFL) score of 230 or- IBT (internet-based TOEFL) minimum score of 80 or- The English language requirement may be satisfied for applicants who have successfully completed full time secondary or tertiary studies or equivalent qualification where the language of instruction and assessment was in English. Academic transcript and an official letter from the institution certifying that English was the medium of instruction and assessment must be provided.

COURSE FEESThe fee for this programme is RM12, 000. A 10% discount is given to• Early bird registration, with payment to be made two months prior to the starting date. • Group registration for 10 or more individuals. • The fee is negotiable and subject to further discussion with the Dean of the faculty.

SCREENING TESTA screening test is to be administered to determine students' command of English during the first week of their arrival. The test will help the faculty to know more about the students’ proficiency levels and allow the teaching staff to strategize their teaching materials and approaches accordingly.

The result of the screening test cannot be used as an entry fulfillment to the academic programme offered at the university or to get exemption from any module in the ILP.

Ideally, students who want to excel in a programme should have a minimum English requirement of Band 4.0 (IELTS). However, students who want to come with lower results can still pursue their studies with the condition that they attend and complete the required English proficiency levels offered by the faculty.

OTHER MATTERSUndergraduate students who have successfully completed the Intensive Language will be taking two compulsory generic English courses during their undergraduate studies while postgraduate students will be offered optional courses on thesis writing and presentation of research projects upon completion of this programme.

PROGRAMME OFFERINGS

REGISTRATION DATE

The Intensive Language Programme (ILP) is offered to prospective undergraduate and postgraduate students who have been given a conditional offer by UNIMAS. The learning objectives, contents and assessments of the courses follow closely the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standard. This programme will be conducted at the Faculty of Language Studies and Communication Studies (FLSCS).

The ILP consists of 3 modules which are taught over 6 months (1300 hours). There are two intakes each year (Feb and August). The hours consist of face-to-face or in class contact, online/ self-access activities, outside-class-on campus activities, and field trips. At the end of each module, students will sit for an internal test. The students who achieve the required scores will continue to a new module and those who fail will need to repeat the module for an extra 2 months.
