Buses and Traffic
• Besides regular service offerings to the public, we run
– Chartered bus services, and
– Dedicated bus services
for corporates and schools in Bengaluru
• Flexible schedules as per the requirements of schools and firms
• Initiative to reduce private vehicle usage in Bengaluru in a bid to alleviate road congestion

Initial Success after implementation of ITS
• Improved operational discipline by monitoring late departure , early arrival and route deviation.
• Depot Automation of duty rotation and waybills has helped save a lot of time & effort wasted in manual operations. It also reduced discretion at depot manager level thereby bringing transparency and higher crew satisfaction.
• Recording Harsh Acceleration and Deceleration and Over-speeding & subsequent actions helped improve driving habits, reduced losses due to traffic penalties and accidents, and reduced wear and tear.
• We now need to go beyond these measures to improve operations planning and efficiency

Key Input Data
• Form 4 (vehicle schedules and crew shifts)
• Schedule mapping(Vehicles assigned to Schedules)
• Duty Rota (Crew Schedules)
Key Output Data
• Vehicle tracking unit data for 6500 buses – Vehicle id, Lat, Lon, Time
• Waybill/ Ticketing data – Lat, Lon, Origin, Destination, Fare
• ITS also captures other data for auditing purposes
Together, BMTC captures 1 billion rows of data each month
ITS Data Management Practices

Ongoing Data Analytics efforts
• BMTC is partnering with multiple organisations on data analytics
– IIMB, WRI, IISc, IIIT-B
• None of the agencies could develop complete data analytics
• Issues faced with Data management
– GPS data not continuous-Leading to inability to provide real-time information to users
– Data too big to handle for analysis
• Most analysis restricted to small sample datasets
– Data analytics people sometimes lack domain knowledge on public transport operations

Rationalization proposed by IIMB
Bringing Bengaluru to your doorstep...
• Key Questions for operations planning
– Q: What is the average speed on each corridor?
– Q: Which routes need how many schedules?
– Q: How to optimise the cost of operations?
– Q: How to maximise revenue with the current fleet?
Directions for data management and analytics

Lessons Learnt during ITS implementation
• In complex and large scale projects such as Intelligent Transport Implementation, QCBS should be utilized to select System Implementers as against L1 system followed in BMTC.
• Sub-contracting should be avoided for major modules of ITS, SI should have ample technical and prior experience in implementing similar projects.
• All the specifications should be comprehensive and there should not be any open ended parameters.
• The project management consultants should be brought onboard during SI RFP preparation itself rather than after selecting the vendor.
• Deploying sufficient number of technically experienced resources and experienced project management team to remain on-site for the duration of the project.
• Deployment of technically experienced resources for O&M activities.

Road Ahead
Ensuring mapping of correct vehicles to allotted schedules.
Rationalization of schedule planning and operations using heuristics and system intelligence.
100% data is not available due to various application/hardware issues.
Ability to run analytics and improve operational efficiency, fleet and crew management.
Ability to leverage big data techniques for predictive analysis and incremental improvements.
Ability of the system for Dynamic form-4 generation.
Not able to provide accurate real time data in the Passenger Information System and Mobile application.

May 2016 Slide 17
Challenges faced during implementation.
Change management with a work force of around 36,000. There was lot of rejection for acceptance of ETM’s by the conductors and VTU fitment by the drivers.
Availability of Vehicles for VTU fitment.
Synchronizing operations of BMTC in tune with ITS
High dependence of day to day operations on network and IT infrastructure
Ensuring mapping of correct vehicles to allotted schedules.
