Introduction The Intel® Core™ i5-700 desktop processor series is
the next generation of 64-bit.
Quad-core processor built on 45-nanometer process technology.
Throughout this presentation, the Intel® Core™ i5-700 desktop processor series refers to the Intel® Core™ i5-760, i5-750, and i5-750S processor.

History
The first Intel Core products was released in January 2006, called Core Solo and Core Duo, they were only used in laptop computers, no desktop version.
Few months later in July of 2006 was presented Core 2 Duo processor for desktop and laptop computers. Not so often models were Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Extreme. Quad was presented in August 2008 and Extreme in July 2007.

Specifications
Four cores
Cache: 8 MB
support DDR3 RAM
Turbo Boost is available. (Turbo boost is the technology that automatically speeds up the processor when the PC needs extra performance. This is done by "dyanmic overclocking" i.e. increasing CPU clock-speed. This technology is available in Core i5 processors and does not exist in any of the i3 processors. )

Operation
The first step, fetch, involves retrieving an instruction (which is represented by a number or sequence of numbers) from program memory.
The location in program memory is determined by a program counter (PC), which stores a number that identifies the current position in the program

Interfaces
System memory features include:
Data burst length (amount of data transferred during memory Read and Write transactions ) of eight for all memory organization modes
64-bit wide channels
DDR3 I/O Voltage of 1.5 V
Maximum memory bandwidth of 10.6 GB/s in single-channel mode or 21 GB/s in dual-channel mode assuming DDR3 1333 MT/s
![Page 10: Intel® core™ i5 700 desktop processor](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022082623/54780d5bb4af9f004c8b46b7/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Interfaces … Cont,
1-Gb and 2-Gb DDR3 DRAM technologies are supported.
Using 2-Gb device technologies, the largest memory capacity possible is 16 GB for UDIMMs (assuming Dual Channel Mode with a four dual rank unbuffered DIMM memory configuration)
Up to 64 simultaneous open pages, 32 per channel (assuming 8 ranks of 8 bank devices)

Interfaces … Cont,
Command launch modes of 1n/2n
Intel® Fast Memory Access (Intel® FMA)
— Just-in-Time Command Scheduling
— Command Overlap
— Out-of-Order Scheduling

System Memory Organization Modes
The integrated memory controller (IMC) supports two memory organization modes, single-channel and dual-channel.
Depending upon how the DIMM Modules are populated in each memory channel, a number of different configurations can exist.
![Page 13: Intel® core™ i5 700 desktop processor](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022082623/54780d5bb4af9f004c8b46b7/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
System Memory Organization Modes … Cont,
Single-Channel Mode In this mode, all memory cycles are directed to a
single-channel. Single-channel mode is used when either Channel A or Channel B DIMM connectors are populated, but not both.
![Page 14: Intel® core™ i5 700 desktop processor](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022082623/54780d5bb4af9f004c8b46b7/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
System Memory Organization Modes … Cont,Dual-Channel Mode It is a feature that was created to reduce the potential
performance bottleneck that exists between the CPU and the Memory Controller. It is enabled when a pair of same-size memory modules are installed into matching banks, usually color coded on the motherboard.
Based on our own experience, dual channel mode provides about a 5-10% increase in performance in most games and applications. Unless specifically required in rare cases, combining memory modules of different sizes in the same machine is compatible and will not affect system stability or reliability in any way.

Processor Register
The processor contains two sets of software accessible registers:
1- Control registersare I/O mapped into the processor I/O space
2- Internal configuration registers
