The two layers-The epidermisis thethinner layer of the two. Itis what you see when you

look at your skin-The deeper, thicker layer isknown as the dermis

    - Subcutaneous Layer also

    EPIDERMIS

  • 8/11/2019 integumentary system.pptx

    13/26

-The epidermis is composed of a type of

    epithelial tissue.

-The epidermis is only as thick as two

sheets of notebook paper over most of thebody

-It is thicker in the palms of your hands

and the soles of your feet.

-Most epidermal cells are dead and

are filled with a protein calledkeratin, which helps make the skin

tough.-The Epidermis is made up of

    stratified squamos

    DERMIS

  • 8/11/2019 integumentary system.pptx

    16/26

    -The dermis lies underneath the

    epidermis

-It is mostly connective tissue, and

it contains many fibers made of aprotein called collagen

-The fibers provide strength andallow skin to bend without tearing

    The Hair

  • 8/11/2019 integumentary system.pptx

    18/26

-A hair is formed at the bottom of a

tiny sac called a hair follicle-The hair grows as new cells are

added at the hair follicle and oldercells get pushed upward

-The only living cells in a hair are in

    the hair follicle

    FUNCTIONS OF THE HAIR

-Hair protects skin from ultraviolet light

and keeps dust and insects out of your

-a horny covering on the upper

surface of the tip of the finger andtoe in humans and other primates.

-Nails form from nail roots underthe skin at the base and sides of
