So What?

The promise of Smart Grids can’t be realized without robust, scalable, secure and interconnected networks underpinning their end-to-end scope

Nothing about Smart Grid is cheap. Near-term investments in technology need to be made with a long-term view. The utility will live with the decision for a very long time.

Smart Grid/Smart Metering initiatives aren’t “Greenfields” – they are deployed into existing grids supported by legacy telecommunications capabilities, forcing dramatic, disruptive change into both domains simultaneously over many years – Evolutionary, not Revolutionary approaches are required

The level of telecommunications complexity needed for Smart Grids – from adding physical endpoints to IP addresses and VLAN’s – increases by several orders of magnitude compared to today’s networks.

Multiple telecommunications solutions, as well as a mix of Public and Private network services and technologies, wired and wireless, will be present in a complete solution.

Grid and Network security (physical and logical) will require comprehensive, policy-based approach that uses IP technologies to secure critical cyber assets throughout the utility’s footprint.

Integrated networks protect investments by reducing complexity and overlap, are easier to manage, and can be deployed in phases to meet near-term needs. The key is to keep a long-term view of the goal.
