Integration of Rational Functions by Partial Fractions
Integrate:
For instance, the rational function can be rewritten as
![Page 3: Integral - 3 Meeting 11. Integration of Rational Functions by Partial Fractions.](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022110404/56649eb65503460f94bbf204/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Then, we have
The method for rewriting rational functions as a sum of simpler fractions is called themethod of partial fractions.

General Description of the Method
Success in writing a rational function ƒ(x)/g(x) as a sum of partial fractions depends on two things:• The degree of ƒ(x) must be less than the degree of g(x). That is, the fraction must be proper. If it isn’t, divide ƒ(x) by g(x) and work with the remainder term.

General Description of the Method
• We must know the factors of g(x). In theory, any polynomial with real coefficients can be written as a product of real linear factors and real quadratic factors. In practice, the factors may be hard to find. A quadratic polynomial (or factor) is irreducible if it cannot be written as the product of two linear factors with real coefficients.

Example
Use partial fractions to evaluateSolution:The partial fraction decomposition has the form
![Page 8: Integral - 3 Meeting 11. Integration of Rational Functions by Partial Fractions.](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022110404/56649eb65503460f94bbf204/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The solution is

Hence we have

Example
Use partial fractions to evaluateSolution:First we express the integrand as a sum of partial fractions with undeterminedcoefficients.

Example
Use partial fractions to evaluateSolution:First we divide the denominator into the numerator to get a polynomial plus aproper fraction..

Example
Use partial fractions to evaluateSolution:The denominator has an irreducible quadratic factor as well as a repeated linearfactor, so we write
![Page 15: Integral - 3 Meeting 11. Integration of Rational Functions by Partial Fractions.](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022110404/56649eb65503460f94bbf204/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Clearing the equation of fractions gives
Equating coefficients of like terms gives
![Page 16: Integral - 3 Meeting 11. Integration of Rational Functions by Partial Fractions.](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022110404/56649eb65503460f94bbf204/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Solve these equations simultaneously to find the values of A, B, C, and D:
Obtaining
![Page 17: Integral - 3 Meeting 11. Integration of Rational Functions by Partial Fractions.](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022110404/56649eb65503460f94bbf204/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Finally, using the expansion above we can integrate:
![Page 18: Integral - 3 Meeting 11. Integration of Rational Functions by Partial Fractions.](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022110404/56649eb65503460f94bbf204/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
In some problems, assigning small values to x, such as x = 0, 1, 2, to get equationsin A, B, and C provides a fast alternative to other methods.
![Page 19: Integral - 3 Meeting 11. Integration of Rational Functions by Partial Fractions.](https://reader038.fdocuments.net/reader038/viewer/2022110404/56649eb65503460f94bbf204/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
ExampleFind A, B, and C in the expression
