1010New Bridge andWalking/Cycling routes get the go-ahead in South Dublin County

South Dublin County Council hassecured more than €1.5 million fromthe National Transport Authority todeliver a significant new landmarkpedestrian and cycle bridge togetherwith new footpaths and cycleways atthe point where two planned cycleroutes meet in the Dodder Valley Park.

The bridge will join Firhouse andTallaght mid-way between Old Bawnand the M50 and will form part of boththe Tallaght to Ballyboden and DodderValley Greenway cycle routes. As well aslinking the existing communities ofTallaght and Firhouse by providing anew shorter and more direct route, thebridge will form part of a widernetwork of new high quality cyclewaysthroughout the Dublin region.

Mayor Dermot Looney is verysupportive of the project and said“These routes are aimed at servingcommuter and school cyclists in linewith planning, transport and healthpolicies to encourage a greater uptakeof cycling, better alternatives to the carand more physical activity”.

The County Manager, DanielMcLoughlin added “Given its attractive, riverside and parkland setting, theDodder Valley route has significantpotential for leisure and tourism as wellas commuter cycling”.

In addition to improving the physicalinfrastructure with the support of theNTA, South Dublin County Council isworking with Dublin City Council todevelop the route as a ‘Greenway’ thatwill extend from Grand Canal Dock inDublin City Centre to theBohernabreena reservoirs in the Dublin Mountains.

Is your family Tallaght born and bred for generations?

If so, you might be able to contribute to theIrish DNA Atlas. The project is acollaboration between the GenealogicalSociety of Ireland and the Royal College ofSurgeons in Ireland and they are looking forvolunteers to contribute their DNA foranalysis and study. The aims of the IrishDNA Atlas Project are twofold: geneticgenealogy and health research. It willfurther our knowledge of the populationhistory of Ireland and its connection withother populations in Europe and also helpus to understand how genes influencehealth in Ireland.

So far they have over one hundredparticipants but they need more. They havegood coverage over the entire island ofIreland. They now need to complete thecoverage and while they will acceptparticipants with ancestry in any part ofIreland they are particularly interested inparticipants with ancestry in the MidlandsNorth and East, Limerick-North Cork-Waterford, The West Coast and all Islandsand North East coastal areas.

The participants that they are looking forcan be either male or female. They shouldbe able to complete a four generationpedigree chart showing their eight great-grandparents. Their eight greatgrandparents should have been born in thesame area; within a distance of 30 kms ofeach other (this can be flexible).

For more information visit the website ofthe Genealogy Society of Ireland atwww.familyhistory.ie or email Irish DNAAtlas at [email protected]

Kealan Doyle 20

Could you tell ourreaders a bit about your background? I grew up in Dublin, beside theseaside, I was always mad into fishas a kid, kept and bred tropicalfish, and used to go fishing.

Anything to do with animals, butparticularly fish I was interested inreally. Jack Cousteau was the idolat the time and I rememberwatching all these natural historydocumentaries so I suppose thefollow on from that was to studymarine biology, so I went toGalway to do that.

From there I just travelled, workedand studied around the world. Idid my Masters in the UK then Imoved to Africa for three years, to

Kealan Doyle (AKA The Seahorse Man) is a Marine Biologist and conservationist who has spent the past two decades working to protect seahorses from extinction in various parts of the world.

Three years ago he was the subject of an award winning documentary which showed the extraordinaryjourney he made to save the species. As well as this he also cultivates and breeds these fascinatingcreatures at his business, Seahorse Aquariums, in Ballymount. InTallaght Magazine met up with Keelan for a chat about his remarkable life and the wonderful species he has fought to protect.

INTERVIEWBy Padraig Conlon

Ghana where I studied seahorsepopulations around the coast.

The Americans wanted to build adam which was going to flood anarea the size of Ireland and wasgoing to wipe out local seahorsepopulations.

There was never any scientificwork done in this area so Iorganised a trip to research whatwas in the area in the hope that itwould stop it being built.

We found species there that wereunique to that area, that could befound nowhere else in the world,so the dam wasn’t built. Twentyyears on from that they’re tryingonce again to build the dam.

What happened afteryour time living in Africa?I got badly, badly sick in Africa, spent just under a year in hospitaland eventually came back toIreland where I was a year inconvalescence.

I eventually got myself backtogether again and went out tothe Galapagos Islands where Iworked for three years studyingthe effects of El Nino on the seahorse populationaround the Galapagos Islands and from then on it’s always been seahorse related.

What is it aboutseahorses that hasinspired you so much?

Well as a kid who was mad intofish, I couldn’t not be fascinatedby seahorses. Their shape, theircamouflage, the fact that they’rethe only animal in the worldwhere the male has the babies.

He dances around the femaleevery morning and they staytogether for life. When she dies hewill die of a broken heart abouttwo weeks later.

Did you know there are 41companies in Ireland who have a seahorse as their logo? Whenwe went to register the name itwas difficult because there wereso many other companies using it in their name.

I think that shows that there’ssomething really unique, reallyfascinating about seahorses.

The number of people who we’veshown seahorses to in the lasttwenty years, who’ve come up tome with tears in their eyes sayingthey didn’t actually think theyexisted! They’re seen as a mythicalcreature, they’re part of Greekmyth and legend, they werereputed to have pulled Neptune’schariot.

So they’re such an unusualcreature and on top of all thatthey are under threat of becomingextinct. This is a creature we havehad on this planet since the timeof dinosaurs.

It’s in every sea, every ocean andin the last 20 years, not 200, 20years, we are basically wipingthese guys out. It’s not evolution;it’s not a natural progression.

At 19 I got my first seahorses andafter that it was a love affair!

21 THEY’RE SUCH AN UNUSUAL CREATURE AND ON TOP OF ALL THAT THEY ARE UNDER TREAT

OF BECOMING EXTINCT

Main 3 22Zachary Quinto 22Every year, hundreds of millions of seahorsesare harvested from the sea to be used – largelyas aphrodisiacs – in traditional ChineseMedicine. Populations are falling so quickly thatthe species will most likely be extinct in just 20years time.

Save our Seahorses followed Irish marinebiologist Kealan Doyle on a fascinating journeyfrom Sumatra to Hong Kong as he revealed thescale of the global seahorse trade.

From the subsistence fishing villages ofIndonesia and southern China to the TraditionalChinese Medicine markets where hundreds ofthousands of dried seahorses are sold, Kealanexposed a chain of supply from the sea bed tothe factories, clinics and boardroom tables of anever-growing industry.

Kealan Doyle2323How did you find outabout them when youwere a kid? There was no such thing asGoogle or Wikipedia when Iwas young or even themagazines weren’t reallyavailable so it was throughlibraries, and the natural historydocumentaries of DavidAttenborough or Jack Cousteauand that’s the way it was.

So you could imagine thefascination and the awe, justthe complete and utteramazement, at natural historyand then being able to go outand research and discover as akid in rock pools and forests.

There seems to be anexplosion of interestagain for people tohave fish tanks, would this be correct? Yes you’re right, the problemnowadays is kids have becomeso much into video games andmobile phones etc, things thatare distractions and canbecome quite stressful, so kidsdon’t get a minute nowadaysbecause they’re on Facebook or Twitter or whatever.

Fish are an extremely relaxingcreature, it’s a very relaxinghobby and it teachesresponsibility and awareness ofthe natural world so I thinkparents are now very keen forkids to appreciate the naturalworld and also to have thequalities that are required tolook after animals and becauseof the calming effect of fish.

I think post Celtic Tiger there’s alot of stress, a lot of pressure

and depression out there and wefind a lot of people who just wantfish tanks for the enjoyment factor.

The comment we get back moreand more from people is “Do youknow what, we’re not watching theTV, and the kids aren’t watching theTV nearly as much.” The fish tankhas this sort of appeal; it drawspeople to it because of its relaxation value.

Traditionally aquariums were aglass box; a noisy air pump to theside of it and a gravel filter and itwas very dirty and noisy. Thefemales of the house used toabsolutely hate it.

Now they come into a showroomand you can see how aquariumsare part of the furniture, you canbuild them into the wall, you canhave mini aquariums in thekitchen. They’re clean, they’requiet, and they’re part of thedécor of the house.

We have aquariums now in everyhospital in Dublin, a huge amountof old folks homes, and doctorand dentist surgeries whereobviously people are stressed.

We did an amazing TV show withDermot Gavin in Temple Streetwhere we built an undergroundaquarium world for the kids.

To go in there every two weeks tomaintain the aquarium and to seethe benefits and the enjoymentand relaxation it brings to thechildren is wonderful.

There are some kids who are sosick that they can get violentduring the day so the hospitaluses the fish tank to try and relaxthem and they’ve found it works.

That would be the nature of thecalming effect.

HIQA have also recommendedfish tanks for old folk’s homes forthe therapeutic effect and healingbenefits they give.

How is the businessgoing for you at the moment? Excellent, we are so busy thatwe’ve just had to take on our 12thstaff member. Of course it wasn’talways like this. Anyone who sawthe documentary would knowthat for the first year and a half Iwas living in the shop, sleepingon the floor at night, unbeknownst to the landlord, because there was so little moneyand things were so tight.

Since then we have been gettingbusier and busier and busier, notjust from people in the localitybut at the weekend you will see aphenomenal amount of NorthernIreland registrations in the carpark, people from Cork, Kerry andGalway.

People travel I suppose becausethey appreciate this isn’t just abusiness for us, it’s very much apassion. We breed the fish, we’re fish addicts ourselves! This is what we do in our sparetime. It’s a passion first and abusiness second. That’s whatmakes it so enjoyable, the factthat you can work at somethingthat is your passion.

You have fish from allover the world; could youexplain to our readershow the fish get here? What happens kind of gives you

an idea of how complicated it canbe because these fish either getcaught or bred. Most of the freshwater ones will have been bred incaptivity in areas like Africa. Thesethen have to be collected, settledand transported.

They get transported in cleanwater in bags, which is thenoxygenated and put in a specialbox which keeps them at therequired temperature and thenthey are brought by airplane tous. We then have to go andcollect them after a prolongedquarantine period.

Then we acclimate them to thewater, and we slowly work onthem to improve their feeding andminimise their stress for aboutthree weeks before we’re ready tosell them. It’s the only place inIreland where this is done.

What this all means is that whenyou buy a fish you know it’s beenfully quarantined and there areno health issues because all ittakes is one sick fish to wipe outyour entire aquarium.

Do you think that what ismissing in business inIreland is that peoplearen’t doing what theylove but doing whatmakes money instead? There is one piece of advice Iwould always give people. I havetwo daughters myself and theeldest is in third year in university,“go with what you want, do whatyou love and you’ll never work aday in your life.”

I can only go from my ownexperience. My own father wasthe opposite. He worked in

InTallaghtMaster45.qxp_Layout 1 22/11/2013 17:22 Page 23

Page 24: InTallaght EDITION 45

24something he hated all his lifeand I always swore I’d never letthat happen myself.

I absolutely idolize what I do, Iwent through huge financialdifficulties over the years, I endedup in the highest court in the landand represented myself whenthings went bad. What I’menjoying now is not that we’remaking lots of money but thatwe’re not being chased by thebanks and the clouds are startingto clear. I can now do what Ialways wanted to do.

So for example we’re doing thekids TV work, which I lovebecause it’s educational, it’sinteractive and it’s fun. We’ve nowset up the Save Our SeahorsesCharity, we have projects inCambodia and Indonesia wherewe’re teaching local people howto cultivate Sea Horses. There aretwo reasons for this; 1. They’rereleasing 50% of what they breedback to the wild to replenish localstocks and 2. They’re selling 50%so they’re also getting an incomesource. As well as this they haveseen an increase in eco tourismand they are doing research work for us.

As regards the tank in TheSquare, we worked nine days andnine nights solid there to get itready, I went down a few daysago to put the fish in and I justwatched the buzz that the tankwas creating, the kids wereenjoying it, knowing what specieswas what. There were tears in myeyes just watching that tank! That’s what makes it worthwhile.

See “The Squarium” for yourself on Level 2 of The Square.

Acting has always been a big partof my life. I got my first role whenI was only 8 playing the lead rolein the School production of Annie.I got the buzz instantly and it wasa magical experience. I continuedacting all through school and then did a Screen Acting courseand courses in Comedy andComedy Improv.

Is that why you are most comfortable as a screen actress?

I love the theatre, the buzz of alive performance is great and I getthat from the comedy improv butI think because the theatre is sucha long process with scripts, rehearsals, dress rehersals etc Iprefer the screen work.

Film is more instant; you get thescript, do the character develop-ment and you are on, Action!

Tell us about your latest project?

I have just finished shooting afeature film entitled A Day LikeToday in which I play a lead role. It’s an 80-minute film that’sdirected by Gerald Walsh. We shotit in ten days Dublin's inner city andit’s currently in post production.

What is it about?

I play a girl called Alice who is in anabusive marriage and it centresaround a relationship that developsbetween herself and a homelessguy called Joe, who is played byPaul Butler Lennox who who has alot of acting experience. BrianFortune, who was in Game of

Thrones, also features in the movie,so it’s a good cast.

Where will it be screened and when?

As I said, it’s in post productionand it will be screened in theLighthouse Cinema in town inDecember, and Gerald is lookingfor a distributor. It will be sent toall the festivals, Cannes, Sundanceand South by Southwest in Texasso hopefully it will get somepositive recognition.

It’s really beautifully shot andGerard had the idea of the film forquite a while. He has a great “cando “ attitude, as do many peoplein the industry in Ireland thesedays, and is a highly skilled andtalented film maker. All the castand crew really believe in theproject and that is really veryimportant to a successful project.

Shooting an 80 minutefeature in such a shortperiod must have beenintense how do you getinto the role and thendetach yourself from itwhen it is all over?

The character I play is so differentfrom my reality. Alice is quitedowntrodden and dowdy which isnot me at all and I am in such agood relationship it was hard torelate to her. It was hard tounderstand the fear that she musthave experienced each day whenshe returned home to herhusband, when she was basicallyscared by her surroundings.

Myself and my husband Niall hada discussion about how this wouldfeel which helped me tounderstand her mindset. Becauseit was shot in such a short spaceof time it was hard to switch offafterwards. I found myselfdisplaying some of Alice’s traits fora number of weeks after we hadfinished shooting and doingthings that were totally out ofcharacter for me.

Is that unusual for anactor to take the rolehome like that?

I don’t think so, especially whenyou are dealing with such aserious issue of mental andphysical abuse. To do the role youare playing, and the issues thatyou are dealing with, which in thiscase is justice, you have tobecome immersed in thecharacter and you cannot just flicka switch and return to your ownnormality afterwards.

The film was made to deliver a

INTERVIEW

We spoke to the effervescent local actress, mother and drama teacherAndie McCaffrey Byrne about her role in an upcoming feature film, juggling family life with an acting career and her hopes and dreams for her future acting roles.

Andie McCaffrey Byrne27message and it was importantthat we did all we could to conveythat message to the viewer and Ihope we pulled it off.

That’s the pressure of working inthis business, you are making realsomeone else’s work and it isimportant that you do that to thebest of your ability. You owe it tothe writers, directors andproducers.

Obviously we wish youwell with the film and welook forward to seeingthe finished product. What would your hopesbe for the future maybe anew love interest forNidge in Love/Hate?

Obviously every actor wants toperform to the largest possibleaudience and a part in Love/Hatewould be very interesting andchallenging. I have two otherfeatures in the pipeline, one ofwhich is an interesting projectwith director Paco Torres originallyfrom Seville who moved here in’97. It is being shot in 24 hours. The other will be shot in 2014, it’sa movie called CardboardGangsters which has been writtenby John Connors who recentlyplayed Patrick, the bomb maker inLove/Hate and he also starred inKing of the Travellers with PeterCoonan.

What is the ultimatedream for your career?

Well it’s only natural for everybodyto want to do what they do at thehighest level and I often joke tothe husband that we will go fromTallafornia to California, that’s the

dream but you have to berealistic. Right now it’s aboutputting the head down andworking hard; good work getsmore work as they say in theindustry, so I just need to do thebest I can and hope for thebreaks. I like to take roles thatchallenge me at this stage of mycareer. In the beginning I wouldtake almost any role but now I ambeing more selective and like towork with people who can teachme something new.

It all sounds veryinteresting, how do you juggle this with the everyday mundanetasks of being a wife and mother?

With great difficulty. I have twokids of school going age so theyare not babies and that allows meto be more flexible. I have a lot ofsupport at home and everybodyin the household chips in andhelps it to work. We plan hoursahead not days or weeks and thismakes life interesting. When youget a call sheet you have to bethere so it’s impossible to plan lifetoo far ahead, no two days are thesame and it makes things veryinteresting indeed. I have alwaysbeen this way so everybody isused to it. I enjoy not knowingwhats happening next and alwaysendeavor to be open to new workopportunities and possibilities.

Keep an eye on InTallaght fordetails of when and whereyou can see Andie’s film, wehope to keep tabs on herdeveloping career. You cansee a trailer for A Day likeToday on our Facebook Page!

38THE COUNSELLORBy Rachel Lynch

Our own talentedMichael Fassbendertakes the lead role in Ridley Scott’s new thriller.

Although don’t let the title foolyou, Fassbender actually playsa lawyer in El Paso, who ishandsome, charming and toococky for his own good.

He is crazy in love with Laura(Penelope Cruz), and thefeeling is mutual. It seems to be quite the romantic movie tostart with.

The “counsellor” is having aspot of financial trouble, andwe see him lead into the drugtrafficking trade by Reinerplayed by Javier Bardem.

The counsellor then enlists therather shady Westray played byBrad Pitt to help him get hishands on $20 million worth ofcocaine.

It’s quite obvious that allinvolved here are way out oftheir depth and are unaware ofthe type of people that theyhave now associatedthemselves with.

Once the counsellor gets ataste of the luxury lifestyleenjoyed by his friends Reinerand Malkina played byCameron Diaz, he will stop atnothing to ensure it continues, not for him but for his newfiancé Laura.

If you liked Cast Awayor movies like ThePerfect Storm then All Is Lost is a film you must see.

I have to say, the trailer alonewas enough of a selling pointfor me. Robert Redford playsan unnamed character whotells a gripping story of survival.

While crossing the IndianOcean alone in his sailboat, hefinds he has collided with ametal shipping container whichleaves a sizeable hole in hishull. Water begins to fill hisboat and he must devise aplan to stop the wholeboat capsizing.

There is very littlebackground given to thestory. Director J.C. Chandorhas focused solely on onelonely man’s survival.

There is a momentshown in the trailer thatmay remind viewers ofCast Away. Themoment when TomHanks loses Wilson, the

only thing he had to hold ontothroughout his ordeal.

This movie has a similar scene.Instead Wilson is substitutedfor the boat. The vulnerabilityof Redford’s character is nowclear.

All Is Lost is a gripping exercisein visual storytelling. This isapparent throughout the threeminute trailer as very fewwords are spoken. It’s tense andsuspenseful and will withoutdoubt be one movie I will be

queuing up tosee this month.

39CARRIEBy Rachel Lynch

Personally I have neverbeen a fan of remakes.

But director Kimberly Peirceshould be applauded for theexcellent casting alone here. This Carrie White, played byChloë Grace Moretz is moreconventionally pretty than thescrawny, big eyed misfit playedby Sissy Spacek in the 1976original. I also respect Peirce forwhat she has done with thisproduction, taking the story’soriginal form and adapteding itto the modern day.

Carrie may seem like a normalgirl yet she lives with a deepsecret. Her mother Margaret, played by Julianne Moore, seesher daughter’s secret ofunexplained powers as signs ofevil. She is uncomfortable withthe idea of Carrie beingaccepted as a “normal” girl andwants to hide her from theworld as much as she can.

The story itself tells of ayoung girl whostruggles with thechanges of ateenage girl with nosupport at homefrom her unlovingmother. Carrie is self

conscious and feels “ugly”. Yetwhen she is approached by oneof the schools most popularboys and asked by him toattend the dance as his partnershe is elated. She feels asthough she has been acceptedsocially. What follows is a nightof terror. Even if you tend toavoid remakes, I’d recommendgiving this one a try.

This film surprised me, thereare a number of scenes thatexplain the original in moredetail, for example why Carrie’smother has deep issues withshowing affection to herdaughter. It’s a modern daytake on a much loved classic.

LADY GAGAArtpopBy Rachel Lynch

BASTILLEOf The NightBy Padraig Conlon

40

Lady GAGA has always beensomewhat of a divisivecharacter over the years. Sheis certainly not your typicalpop superstar.

Whether you love her or hate her shehas a huge number of devoted fans outthere. She herself has over time becomesomething of a pop culture icon herself.

Her new album Artpop will be Gaga’sthird release and although it’s inevitableshe will receive a backlash for this onelike her previous two, she won’t be toobothered. Even her “little monsters”would admit many of her songs take afew listens to just get an idea of what isgoing on lyrically.

Artpop has 15 tracks spread over justunder an hour. Despite this, havinglistened to the album in its entirety, Ifind many of the songs drag. Swine,Donatella, and Mary Jane Holland allreach the four and a half minute mark, and all would have been improved hadthey of dropped a verse or two.

One thing I cannot fault Gaga onthroughout this album is her originality.Yes she is on a level of her own butsurprisingly enough Jewels N’ Drugswhich features T.I., Too $hort, and

Twista, is a combination that on paper to mesounds like a disaster yet funnily enough endsup working as one of the record’s best tracks.

There are a handful of surprises like this as Ilistened down the track list. Dope is one of thosevery tracks. She absolutely lets rip with her voice, but I can’t help think the lyrics in this let thewhole song down.

I suppose what may shock fans of Gaga will bethe random parts of normality throughout. Youfind yourself listening to particular songs andalmost forgetting that this was once the sameartist that donned a dress made of raw meat foran awards show. I suppose that’s what makes itso brilliant.

Gaga has changed modern day pop; some maysay for the better, others would be far moreskeptical. It goes without saying the album is fun and harmless, not to everyone’s taste, butGaga has done more in her five short years inthe music industry than many of those aroundfor years. She has set a precedent that many like Rihanna and Katy Perry have all tried toemulate over the past few years, with varyinglevels of success.

British Indie rockers Bastille have puttogether a fairly mad combination of tunesfor their latest single Of The Night.

The track is a mish mash of two Ninetiesdance hits, Corona’s Rhythm Of The Nightand Snap’s Rhythm is a Dancer, but thisdoesn’t mean it’s a banging dance floor filler.Instead it’s more of a subdued trip back tothe 90’s, using some of the beat of theCorona track with the vocal intensity ofRhythm Is A Dancer to create a fairly uniqueindie pop record. The echoed vocals of leadsinger Daniel Smith ensure the whole thingdoesn’t descend into a big vat of cheese.Originally released on the band’s earlier EPLaura Palmer, Of The Night will appear onBastille’s re-release of their successful albumthis month, however this time going underthe name All This Bad Blood.

Since arriving on the mainstream last year,Bastille have become one of the UK’s leadingbands, selling out venues all over the world, and achieving something most British groupshave failed to do by being successful inAmerica. It takes a lot of nerve to attemptwhat they’ve done on this record and I reckonit’s going be well received by music fans

Tech

It’s been a long time since Apple deliveredunto us a proper redesign of the iPad.

The original, boxy, first-gen tabletlived for about 11 months, replacedin 2011 by a far slinkier version. The tapered design languagesurvived, more or less unchanged, for a further 2.5 years -- a lifetimein the consumer electronics world.

That period was punctuated by two updates, bringing faster chips and abetter display, but it’s a full refreshwe’ve all been waiting for, something to make the good ol'iPad look and feel truly new.

And here it is: the iPad Air. Withthis, the fifth generation of theiPad line, Apple has delivered aproper exterior redesign, craftinga substantially thinner and lightertablet that finally eliminates thechunky bezels handed down sincethe first generation -- at least onthe left and right. But, despite thissignificant exterior reduction, theiPad Air maintains the battery lifeof its predecessor and offers significantly better performance.

Last year’s iPad Mini introduced afresh new design, taking cuesfrom the latest iPod Touch to create a high-end tablet in an impossibly slender form factor.

You could think of the iPad Air asa 20% scaled-up version of theMini, as the two tablets featurenear-identical styling details, thebigger one differing only byhaving more speaker holes on thebottom (80 vs. 56 on the Mini).

Impressively, though, the iPad Airisn’t 20 percent thicker than theMini. In fact, at 7.5mm, it’s only0.3mm deeper -- a massive1.9mm thinner than the previousfull-size iPad. Despite that, thetablet feels just as sturdy and rigidas before, not flexing a bit evenunder rather aggressive attemptsat twisting. Stereo speakers flankthe Lightning connector on thebottom, placement that makesthem far less likely to be obscuredby your hand than the previous-gen iPad’s famously mediocresingle output. They’re also farlouder. However, we can’t helpbut wish Apple had positioned the

left channel speaker on the top, toallow for proper stereo separationwhen held in portrait orientationwhile watching a movie. As it is,you’ll hear everything on the right.

Our only other design complaintis the missing Touch ID. This isApple’s term for the fingerprintscanner built into the Homebutton on the iPhone 5S. It allowsyou to unlock your device withouttyping in a numeric code, alsomaking iTunes purchasespassword-free and, therefore, infinitely less annoying.

Of course, nobody cares aboutnumbers if the experience doesn’tback that up, and it does --though perhaps not to that samedegree. Apps load noticeablyfaster, particularly big games, where you’ll be able to jump intoand out of levels far more quickly.

Additionally, we noticed slightlyhigher frame rates in somegames, though that was far lessprevalent. We’d anticipate thisbecoming a far more commonthing once more titles becomeoptimized for the 64-bit A7 CPU.

Game 44CONTRAST

Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, there’s a new show in town!

Contrast is a 2D/3D puzzle/platformer developed byCompulsion Games. On October31, 2013, the game wasconfirmed to launch as one oftwo free titles offered toPlayStation Plus members, along with Resogun.

Contrast promises dazzlinglights that will illuminate andconfuse, and deep mystery thatwill envelop you in darkness. Ina 1920s film noir dreamscape, you must become your shadowto help a little girl heal hertroubled family.

The player controls a youngdetective, Dawn, who is able tomove in 3D or flatten herselfagainst walls so she becomes asilhouette that can jumpbetween shadows like in a 2Dplatformer. There is control over

different light sources in the 3Dworld (spotlights, film projectors, etc) to create the proper shadowplatformer paths to reach newareas in the 2D world.

The idea for the game came tocreator, Guillaume Provost, in acoffee shop in Lyon, Francewhen he was working as afreelancer for Arkane Studios."I used to be a renderingprogrammer when I used towrite code, so I thought about alot of physical and/or graphicalnovel ways of interacting withgames, and that's how the ideasparked," he says in a 1UPinterview. "I can't say 'I saw ashadow on a wall' and had thissudden boom of an idea. I wasbasically sitting in a café when Igot the original idea, and I builtup from that."

There are two main characters,an older girl Dawn that youcontrol, and a younger girl Didiwho you meet in a train station. She is discovered to have a

dysfunctionalfamily with arecently murderedmother and anestranged father."She's asking theplayer to changethe course of pastevents in order tomend her family. And that's a little bitthe theme of the whole game,"says Guillaume Provost.

As Didi’s imaginary best friend, you must use your shadowshifting abilities to solvecomplex puzzles, in order tohelp Didi investigate the secretsthat lie behind her troubledfamily. There's a sultry jazzsoundtrack, too, the work of reallife jazz singer Laura Ellis.

Other features include wraparound headlights and the verysporty hidden door handles.Unlike a traditional five door theyare nicely disguised. This gives asporty three door profile with theadded practicality of the extra twodoors. Obviously depending onthe trim levels there are a numberof body, paintjobs and alloysavailable allowing you topersonalise your Clio.

The trim levels available with theClio are Expression, Dynamique

and R-Link. What I find

Motors 46

important to note is that thestandard trim level is extremelygenerous. The interior of the carwill surprise a lot of people, it’ssimple modern and fresh. Thereare very few buttons to overcomplicate the unique look.

The seven inch touch screencaptures your attention and hasthe basic radio, navigation andBluetooth settings and comes asstandard in Dynamique models. The boot doesn’t disappointeither. The boot is bigger thanbefore and with the seats down, itis one of the biggest in its class,so again a huge plus to someonetravelling with a family.

I cannot fault the driving capabilityof the car one bit. It may not be themost suited model to somebodywho is looking for a car a little fasteras it does feel slightlyunderpowered but that won’t be a

problem for most. Dynamicallythe car is much better than whathas gone before. With the Clioavailable in 1.2 petrol and 1.5diesel there really is an option

for everyone depending onpersonal preference.

The Clio is certainly great value formoney. It ticks all the boxes in lowemissions and is on par with allsuper- minis on the market, andby far one of the sportiest nowavailable. In my own opinion ithas to also be top of the list forpracticality. Now that all modelsare five doors families need nothesitate with investing in one ofthese cars.

The new Clio has a starting priceof just €14,990. Check outwww.renault.ie for more info.

52THE HONEY JAR By Kenneth Nolan

Walking, underground,in a land beneath the weak.Ticketless, emotionless, journeying on regardless.

I am a ghost of sorts.I am not at the helm of all my voyages.Nor do I care for the destinations, explanations and ten thousanduntruths, rotten to the core our delightful fruits.

Bitter as the lemon, twice as potent.A bloodied poppy plant or a squared shamrock. The stench of greed slashes my nose and burns my throat,my country sold again, from the traitors to the gloating neighbours.

We are lost now.I wonder of what tourists take photos of in Temple Barand we like the bee shut away in a jar.

Kenneth is a writer and poet from the Tallaght area. He recently won first prize for poetry in the CDVEC Sports& Cultural Competition. He has also been published on-line in the Van Gogh’s Ear Anthology and in The Echo andTallaght Express.

Bookworm1OUR BOOMTIME RATSBy Anne Heffernan

Our Boom-time Rats: Who Do TheyThink They Are? is the first bookfrom Anne Heffernan.

I was very excited about this book as thesynopsis on the back of the book led me tobelieve that this would be a good read.

The book begins with the author telling usabout her then business called GoodVibrations and outlines her hopes for thebusiness and the numerous jobs she wouldcreate with the success of the business. However she quickly lets us know that the

business has failed and she then goes back afew years to start our journey with herthrough the past few years of her life.

She gives us an insight into everything fromthe ideas stage, the planning and she does alot of planning, the experience and the afterthoughts. Throughout the book it can be wittyat times, a favourite of mine would be hertime in France, which was interesting and attimes funny.

When the author does talk about politiciansor facts that came to light after the downturnin the economy, which ultimately lead to therecession, she would tie it in with how itaffected her at that stage in her life. It wasinteresting to see her thoughts at that time as the author is very opinionated which cansometimes drag on longer than the readerwould hope.

She can come across as very condescendingat times and very delusional thinking that allher ideas are brilliant and would have succeedhad they received more backing. One of thefew good ideas she mentioned was theChristmas village, however she could not getthe backing for it. But when speaking of herdisappointment she says how the villagecould have led to Clane becoming a sistertown to a place in Europe or the UnitedStates.

The book is aimed at the ordinary people ofIreland, as the author would put it. Howeverafter reading the book the author would havemuch of the same mind-frame as those whoare or were in power who she gives outabout. She, like many politicians is in a “my way or the highway” mind frame and is opposed to people asking her personalquestions.

Another thing which is evident throughout thebook in a small way but becomes overbearingtowards the end is the religious references. Godor Him starts being mentioned a few times onthe page and you get the sense that it is beingsaid so much just to build up the word-count.

There is also a lot of repetition in the bookwhen it comes to the author’s life, going backand mentioning certain things again and again, such as the failure of Good Vibrations andblaming everything else for its failure. Thisincludes bad timing which is a theme of theauthor’s life.

Upon reading the book I quickly realised thatthis was not the book for me but perhapswould be more appealing to a person who hasgone through some of the difficulties that AnneHeffernan has gone through. As I said thoughthis was not a book aimed at me and perhapsmen and women who have gone through thesame experiences during the Celtic Tiger andsubsequent recession would enjoy this bookmore than I did.

About The AuthorAnne Heffernan currently lives in Co. Kildare,Ireland; she has worked as a freelance journalistfor over 15 years and has a wide range ofinterests and experiences. She has had articlespublished in the Kildare Times, the EveningPress, the Irish Independent, the KildareNationalist and the Liffey Champion and wasinvolved in local radio while living in Co. Wicklow during the 1980s.

How to make eyes popIf you have blue eyes, go for a warm copper, gold, or rich brown eye shadow. Chocolate isan excellent shade choice for eye liner. Peachis another colour that works so well andmakes blue eyes pop.

If you have green eyes, try out purple eyeshadow shades such as lavender, violet, oramethyst. You can choose to keep the coloursheer so it won’t look too intense. For eyeliner, a deep plum is perfect.

If you have brown eyes, you are one of thelucky ones and can wear any shade that willsuit. Use navy blue shadow to really makethem stand out.

Try to avoid an eye shadow that’s the samecolour as your eyes or else you won't get thatcontrast that makes them pop!

Beauty 54ALL ABOUTTHE EYESBy Emer McGillion

Use a soft black pencil above, below andbetween lashes, and line both top and bottominner rims. You can also line the eyelid heavilyand blend upwards towards the crease tocreate a dark base for your smokey eye.Continue to apply your chosen shadow over it.

Groom and fill in your browsA serious eye look needs structure, whichstrong brows help to frame. And with all theattention on your eye area, any bald spots orstraggler hairs will be in the spotlight.

The highest point of the brow should beabout two-thirds of the way out, not in themiddle of the brow.

Incorporate highlightsSince dark make up can make the eyesrecede, you can add shimmery highlightshades. Apply some to the inner corner ofyour eye to reflect some light. You can blendyour highlight shade on the centre of theeyelid too. But avoid frosty shimmer on thebrow bone, which can look dated.

Blend, blend, blendYou’ll probably need less eye shadow than youthink you will. Start with a tiny bit of product onyour brush, and work it outward to create a softsmoke. This makes all the difference when itcomes to preventing a raccoon eye.

Bring the eye shadow below the eye, along thelower lash line. This adds balance and moreintensity. Finish by blending all the shadestogether to erase any hard lines. Andremember that a smokey eye doesn't need tobe perfect - when it looks a little more lived in,it creates a rock chick/Kate Moss feel.

For extra long lashes, place the tip of themascara brush on the outer corners of yourlashes first, do a few strokes, then work yourway in. Extending those corner lashes will makeyour eyes look more open. When using a lashcurler, clamp down at the base, move the curlerout, clamp down, move the curler to the endsand clamp down again.

Gardening55

Winter can lay the composition of a garden looking bare and sad.But if you plant evergreens ofinterest, and train and prune treesand shrubs to give shape, yourgarden need never lose its goodappearance.

Even the hard landscaping provided by paths, steps, paving and walls can help to keep thegarden looking it's best even in winter.

A well-chosen garden ornament, trellis, support or arch can provide a stunning focal point.

If you’re not a very tidy gardener, then try toleave your border plants with unusual barksuch as Acer Davidii, Acer Davidii 'Rosalie, orunusual seedheads such as Phlomis, Sedumand Echinops – well alone and enjoy theirfrosted shapes.

Similarly, soft brown grasses can look warmand mellow in the winter light. If you do gofor this approach, some of the shrubs willneed cutting back in February, before the newgrowth appears.

The coloured stems of the dogwood (Cornus)range from bright green and yellow through toscarlet, wine red and almost black. They’re verygood for winter colour.

It’s amazing how many small flowers will survivethe cold winter weather. Appearing in earlyJanuary, the attractive little snowdrops(Galanthus) force their heads through the cold, hard ground and go well with aconites(Buttercup family) and hellebores.

For the best chance of getting snowdrops togrow, and then to multiply, it is best to buy themafter they’ve finished flowering, when they’re still‘green’, and plant them where they won’t dry outin summer.

Evergreens come into their own at this time ofyear. A low boundary wall, a clipped ball or spiralof box (Buxus) or yew (Taxus), can look stunning, whilst slim conifers such as the Italian cypress(Cupressus sempervirens) provide height at a time when most other plants have been cut back.

Glimpse a snow-covered garden and you’reimmediately whisked off to a land ofmakebelieve, amid comments of ‘it used to snow

so much more when I were a lad’. Itprobably didn’t, but enjoy it anyway.

A topping of snow along the box hedgesreinforces their shape, while a sprinklearound the low-growing black grass(Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’)shows off its striking foliage.

But if there’s a heavy covering keep an eyeon upright growing conifers, and shake offthe snow before it bends or snaps thebranches.

A delicate covering of frost is also to beenjoyed, as long as you’ve taken all the rightprecautions to protect your tender plantsand pots.

Those that need their centres guardingagainst the cold, such as the tree fern andcordyline, should be wrapped up with straw, surrounded by chicken wire.

Pots of half-hardy plants should be takeninto a frost-free, sheltered place, or coveredin bubble wrap or hessian, and raised off the ground.

I have undertaken a number of changes over the past three weeks.

My diet would probably be the first thing tonote. I’m not a great fan of using the term“diet” as some people believe a diet entailsjust not eating. I’m eating, it’s just now I’meating more of the things that are right for me.

I begin every morning with porridge, at first Iwasn’t a great fan but my trainer Nikki hadadvised it as a great start to the day. This waslargely because of how it fills you up all theway to lunch. Lunch was a difficult enoughone to work with. As for most it’s a busy timeof the day and we all tend to grab somethingon the go. Rice is a good start but there areplenty of other variations available that may suit others.

My dinner has to a large extent stayed almostthe same, although I have cut down slightlyon my portion size of potatoes. Any type ofmeat accompanied with vegetables is perfect. As you can tell from my diet above it certainlyisn’t severe and is maintainable for anyone.

The workout sessions have got tougher overthe past three weeks. I have been focusing onplyometric exercises. For anyone who isn’tfamiliar with this form of workout it’s a type ofjump training which includes pop squats, jumping lunges, step running and burpees. These exercises focus on the muscles with thegoal of increasing both speed and power in asshort a time as possible.

I was also introduced to the lat pulldownmachine this week. This took a bit of gettingused to but with a mix of both heavy and lowweights it was manageable. I’m only a fewweeks into the training yet I am amazed at howmany different forms of exercise there are forvarious parts of the body. I couldn’t believewhen working on the lat pulldown machinethat something that seems so focused on yourarms actually was helping to improve myposture along with defining my waist.

Again this week we tackled the core exerciseswhich I explained in the last edition wassomething I found the toughest. I’m slowlyimproving, but with focusing solely on onetype of exercise for so many months with nochange whatsoever, many other parts of my

body have been affected. The first thing I toldmy trainer Nikki when I met with her was Iwanted to change the whole look of mylegs/thighs. The continuous cardio exercisehas contributed to the problem.

With the variety of exercises in which I’m nowpartaking I hope to see a change by the endof my 12 sessions.

lost our rank and ended upgetting drawn against each otherin the first round. He's a very goodfighter from Hungary, who I beatin the final in Beijing in 2010 andhe beat me in the Irish Open thefollowing year. I managed to beathim and put him out of thecompetition so I was veryconfident.

How did the rest of thetournament pan out?Well the Combat Games aredifferent to the OpenTournaments because you fightone day, rest the next, fight thenext day, then a rest day whereasin the other tournaments like theIrish Open normally you couldrack up 23 fights over the twodays, which I prefer. We preparedreally very well, Mark McDermott(Silver Medalist) and myselfshared a room, we didn't do much

on our days off, Russia is very veryexpensive! The tournament wasvery well run, very professional, itand Beijing are the besttournaments I've ever been at.There's a lot of money that goesinto it and it's a stage above theWorld Championships. The firstfight I had was with a Russian guyand I was confident going intothat. In the semis I fought aJordanian fighter who I knewnothing about and I couldn't findany clips of him on YouTube eitherbut I'd never seen anyone fromJordan with his style being succ-essful. I beat him comfortably 11-1.

In the final I met Neri Stella, a 33year old from Italy, a very goodfighter who has always been thereor thereabouts down the years. He's a bit more technical and hislegs are very strong. It was toughto win but I managed to beat him

12-6. for me it's more of a reliefwhen I win because I hate losingso much.

Did you do much extratraining pre tournament? No I don't really train fortournaments specifically. I am asfit now as I will be in six monthstime. On a normal day like today Iwould do three hours. RecentlyI've started to do more strength-based stuff as strength is soimportant in kickboxing.

Today I would have done an hourat CrossFit in Sandyford. It’s veryhigh intensity training. You do allyour Olympic lifts, your snatches, you’re climbing ropes, pushingsledges, it’s very hardcore andvery beneficial for kickboxing. I've really noticed my fitnessimprove because of it.

Take us back to how you got involved inkickboxing originally?I started when I was 11 at TallaghtMartial Arts where I was coachedby Dave Heffernan and MartinBannon, who were both still mycoaches for Ireland at the CombatGames as well. I didn't startfighting internationally until I was16. It was a friend of mine whointroduced me to it, I was alwaysinto the video game Street Fighterso that might have had aninfluence on me as well!

I was real fat when I was a kid so Ithink my parents were happywhen I got interested in a sportand I lost the weight pretty rapidlyfrom the kickboxing. Martin andDave pushed me hard. As withany club, once the coaches seeyou make an effort they tend totake more of an interest in you. Iwon my first tournament inDundalk at the North East Openin 1996, I still have the trophy as

Robbie McMenamy61well! I won a few tournaments ina row after that but I wasn't verytalented when I started, I wasdetermined more so thantalented. I didn't have any morespecific skills than any of the other kids.

Did you do any othersports when you were young? No, I never really did any othersports before kickboxing, I didhorse riding and a bit ofswimming but that was it. I wasnever really into football, apartfrom the odd kickabout.

I was never really into team sportsbecause you don’t know whatother people are doing and ifthey’re pushing themselves. I know when I do and don't trainand I don't have to rely on anyonebut myself.

With individual sports, you getwhat you put into it, so I’ve alwayspreferred individual sports.Kickboxing is a bit of a selfishsport at times as you have tofocus on yourself, even thoughwhen you go to a tournament youwant all your team-mates to winand everyone supports everyoneelse, you have to focus on yourself.

Would you like to see kickboxing in the Olympics? Yes, I would but it probably won'thappen in my time, but for theyoung guys coming through itwould be great. I think the sportwould really take off if it was inthe Olympics. Look at the effectit's had on other combat sports! It'd be huge because kickboxing isa really enjoyable sport, anybodycan do it and a lot of themovements are very natural foryour body anyway. A lot of thepeople who come to Spartan

don't do it to fight just to get fit.

What are your plans forthe future?Next up is the WorldChampionships in Turkey, we'll begoing over on the 30th Novemberwith a full squad. I'll be fightingand coaching at it. There areseven fighters from my clubgoing, five men and two women. My friend Danny goes around theworld filming tournaments so ifany of your readers want to checkout the World Championship he'llbe streaming it on his siteBrannmanndan.com. I'mloving coaching at the moment,we have some great juniors andseniors in the club. I'm alsothinking of doing MMA at somestage.

You've won several WorldTitles in your careeralready, which one haveyou enjoyed the most? The first is always the mostmemorable because there wassuch a big fuss made about it.That was in 2003 in Paris. Becausethere haven't been too manyworld champions from Irelandthat one stood out.

Finally Robbie why doyou think we Irish are sogood at fighting?I suppose we're not as much intoteam sports and we're very cynicaland individual. We are very goodat competitive fighting, whether itbe boxing, kickboxing ortaekwondo, and it doesn't reallymatter at what level we compete,we always do well. The level ofkickboxing in Ireland is very highin both men's and ladies sectionsand if you get into the Irelandteam you have to be really good.
