Massaging babies is a tradition thatexists in many cultures across theglobe but is something that had beensadly neglected in the West. It wasreintroduced by an American woman,Vimala McClure, who learned of infantmassage while she worked in Indiaduring the 1970s. She saw mothersin even the most poverty-strickenareas giving their babies massage aspart of their daily routine. This positivetouch allowed the babies to experi-ence tremendous love and a sense ofsecurity that is sometimes lacking inour society.

Vimala returned to America andbecame a mother herself. Sherecalled the power of massage anddesigned a sequence of strokesspecifically for babies. They werebased on the strokes she hadobserved in India, with the addition ofsome Swedish massage, reflexologyand yoga. She practised on her ownchildren and saw how positively theyresponded to massage. It helped thebabies to stay relaxed and happy aswell as having physical benefits andVimala found that it enhanced hercommunication with her children.

The International Association of InfantMassage ( IAIM ) was founded byVimala McClure in 1981, and hasbeen instructing parents around theworld for over 25 years . The Irishchapter Baby Massage Ireland ( BMI )came into being in 2001 and todayhas a nationwide network of CertifiedInfant Massage Instructors ( CIMIs ).

Moira Glennon has been runningclasses on baby massage for parentsin the community room in CitywestShopping Centre since November2010. She is a mother of 3 andgrandmother of 2, with another on theway. While running a marketingcompany for 15 years, she qualified

as a therapist in both Holistic and HotStone massage therapies and alsoreceived a diploma in Aromatherapy. When her grandchildren started toarrive, she decided to go for the qual-ification as a Certified Infant MassageInstructor (CIMI).

The marketing company wound downdue to the economic climate and shedecided to mainly concentrate onBaby Massage because of the joythese classes bring her. Moira says:“It is so wonderful to observe thebabies because as I well discoveredwith my own sons and grandsons, theearly stages with a newbaby are so precious andfleeting. Taking a BabyMassage course can soenhance the connectionand bonding with this newlittle person.”

Moira offers classes forparents and caregiversand the course fees arepart refunded by some ofthe Health Insurance com-panies. Benefits of BabyMassage include improvedbaby sleep patterns, relieffrom wind and colic, increase in weight gain, and can help with postnatal depression.

Meet Kelly Donegan, a local girl from Kilnamanagh who hasreached the final of Miss Universe Ireland and couldpotentially represent Ireland on the International stage. We met with Kelly earlier in the month for an exlusiveinterview.

Countinuing on with one of the IInTallaght Magazine’skey objectives, that of supporting local success stories,we thought it would be great to highlight the rapid, early stage career progress of one of Tallaghts veryown.

We found out that Kelly is a Tallaght girl through andthrough, with no airs and graces about her. She isdown to earth, with brains as well as beauty. Kellydescribes how growing up with a skin conditionchallenged her self confidence and made her gratefulfor the position she now finds herself in and deter-mined to make the most of what God has given her.

This time last year Kelly was an ordinary girl justcompleting a three year graphic design course atBallyfermot College with aspirations to set up herown graphic design company ‘Razberry Designs’.She has now put this on hold (fortunately for us,limiting our competition!) she helped support herselfthrough college by doing promotional work for drinksbrand Captain Morgan and won Miss Hotspots.ie. Thisgave her the confidence to apply via facebook for theMiss Universe Ireland contest. Should Kelly besuccessfull, her whirlwind journey will culminate witha fantastic trip to Brazil to represent Ireland in theforthcoming Miss Universe Finals.

Follow Kelly’s inspirational story from the girl next doorto a rising star in the Irish modeling scene with the worldat her feet. Check out our exclusive interview with herahead of the final as she demonstrates there is more toher than her looks!

The Miss Universe Ireland Finals are being held at theBurlington Hotel Dublin on Friday June 10th. For more detailson the event contact the Burlington Hotel direct on 01 6185600.

So Kelly, you’re a local girl, where aboutdid you grow up? Where did you go toschool etc?

I grew up here in Tallaght in Kilnamanaghwhich I am very proud of. There’s a hugesense of community throughout Tallaght. The people are so friendly and chatty. Iattended St Paul's School for girls in Green-hills. My favourite subjects were Art andClassical Studies. I also took part in Hockeyand the School choir.

What were you like as a little girl, whattype of childhood did you have?

You will be suprised to know that i wasn’tas confident and outgoing as I am today. Igrew up with a skin condition called eczemawhich I found very difficult. Especially as ateenager, as it hugely affected myconfidence. I couldn’t wear certain makeup, perfume, tan or clothing which is prettytough as a young lady. My eczema is nowunder contol and my confidence is at an alltime high. I have realised that what’s on theinside is more important than what’s on theoutside!

You’re still at a good young age, only 22with plenty of time left to achieve greatthings in your life, is there anyachievement you’re particularly proudof so far?

The biggest achievement in my life to dateis taking part in the Miss Universe IrelandCompetition. I am so thrilled to be part ofsomething so special. It has opened somany doors to me already. I’m alsoproud to say that I hold a HigherNational Diploma in Graphic Designand a FETAC award in Art, Graphicsand Printmaking. Education is soimportant, especially in the MissUniverse Competition. There is a hugestereotype that Beauty Pageants are allabout, good looks and bikini bodies but itcouldnt be further from the truth. My nextgoal in life is to get a motorbike.

Page 20: InTallaght EDITION 04

get to look as good as you do, whatis your daily beauty routine? Anytips you can pass on?

At home my beauty regime usuallyinvolves at least 8 hours of Sleep anight. Glasses and glasses of water andloads of Moisturiser i use Palmer'sCocoa Butter. Coming upto Shoots orevents i get loads of help off CoutureBeauty in Tallaght Village they do all mybeauty treatments, Tan, french polish, facials, body polishes and the rest. Thegirls are amazing their , they alwaysmake sure im looking a hundredpercent for everything. My number onetip is exercise everyday. It keeps yourbody in great shape and it also helpsyour skin look more radiant.

Hopefully, you'll go all the way to besuccsessfull in the grand final. What direction do you see your lifetaking if you win, or even if you don't?

I know exciting adventures are on thecards for me but I dont like to overplan my future. I prefer seeingwhere the wind takes me, it’sway more exciting. Regard-less of winning or losing, Istill hope to pursue a suc-cessful modelling careerhere in Ireland andabroad.

Finally Kelly, you've mentioned yourlife has been crazy these last fewmonths, a quick question for youthat I'm sure all the local lads areitching to ask, do you have time fora boyfriend at the moment or is thatsomething you’re putting off tillafter the finals?

I always have time for love ;)

How did you get involved/inter-ested in modelling? Is it a relativelynew aspect of your life and whatmade you apply for Miss Universe?

Modelling has been a lifelong ambitionof mine. I have just been waiting for theright opportunity which is defenitelyMiss Universe Ireland. I have alwaysfollowed the Miss Universe and MissWorld competitions, I would watchthem every year so when I saw theadvertising on Facebook to apply, Ijumped at the chance.

The final is being held in Brazil, thatmust be really exciting? What doesgoing through to the final involveand what will you have to do?

To win the competetion would be anabsolute dream come true I havealways wanted to visit Brazil. It is sucha beautiful country. To get through tothe final would mean being an Ambas-sador for Ireland. It would be thebiggest honour to represent your coun-try at the Miss Universe Competition inBrazil. There are several categories inthe main competition, some being;Swim-wear, Evening Gown, Walk,Interview and many others. I know if Iwas to win and represent Ireland Iwould wear my sash with such pride.

Being a local girl, all of us here atInTallaght are 100% with you all theway so if you win the Ultimate com-petition and become the next MissUniverse, how would you like touse your position to help people/change the world, that kind of thing?

I know I could change the world if I wasto win Miss Universe. I have a reallygood work ehtic that I know I couldapply to real problems. I feel reallypassionate about animal welfare andteenage suicide and depression, sothey would be key issues I would focuson during my time as Miss UniverseIreland.

A question for all the girls, I'm suretheir all keen to find out about you

I left out the thinly sliced red onioncalled for in the original because Idon’t personally care for raw onion, but by all means add it back in if youwant to. The original recipe doesn’tcall for basil either, but I had half abunch in my fridge and wanted touse it up. You could use any combi-nation of these herbs that you like orhave to hand.

for the salad:4 celery stalks, thinly sliced2 large carrots, grated2 large handfuls grated white cabbage2 large handfuls grated red cabbage1 large handful mint leaves, roughly chopped1 large handful basil leaves, roughly chopped1 large handful coriander leaves, roughly chopped

for the sweet chili dressing: 1 or 2 red chilies, deseeded and finely chopped2 tablespoons lime juice2 tablespoons fish sauce1 tablespoon rice vinegar or white wine vinegar1 tablespoon sugar

Toss all the salad ingredientstogether in a large bowl. In aseparate bowl, mix all the dressingingredients together, stirring until thesugar has dissolved. Add thedressing to the salad and tosstogether. Serve immediately.

Lemon Pepper Salad Dressingadapted from How to Cook BookTwo by Delia Smith

for the dressing2 cloves garlic, peeled2 teaspoons Maldon sea salt1 heaped teaspoon mustard powder, such as Colman’s1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oilzest and juice of 1 large lemon (3 tablespoons juice)

To make the dressing, first crush thegarlic and salt using a pestle andmortar until the garlic is pulverizedinto a paste, then work in themustard powder and pepper. If youhave a large pestle and mortar, addthe olive oil, lemon zest and juicedirectly into it and whisk everythingtogether thoroughly. If your pestleand mortar is small (like mine), thenscrape the garlic paste into a largerbowl and whisk in the olive oil, lemonzest and juice in that.

Misfortune can strike when we leastexpect it. It is unfortunate, but there is areasonable chance that in the course ofour lives we may suffer personal injuriesas a result of being involved in an accidentcaused by another.

Despite the fact that great strides havebeen made in road safety in Ireland overthe last number of years, the fact of thematter remains that road traffic accidentsare still the cause of a large number ofpersonal injury claims each year. If youhave been involved in a road trafficaccident, and have suffered an injury, youmay be entitled to claim for compensa-tion. In addition, to compensation forpersonal injuries, you may also be entitledto claim for damage to your vehicle, lossof earnings, hospital and doctor’s fees, and any other reasonable expensesincurred following an accident.

It is very important that the Gardai arecalled to the scene of a road trafficaccident and that both parties exchangedetails, such as addresses, contact detailsand, most importantly, insurance policydetails (which should be displayed on acurrent insurance disc on each vehicle),if at all possible, the vehicles should notbe moved until such time as the Gardaiarrive. You should also put the camera onyour mobile phone to use and takephotographs of the positioning of thevehicles and the general location of wherethe accident itself occurred. Suchphotographs may be vital in a future Courthearing.

Failure to report a road traffic accident to

the Gardai within 48 hours of sameoccurring may cause difficulties incircumstances where an individualproceeds with a claim against an unin-sured driver. It is also important that, ifpossible, one obtains the name andcontact details of any relevant witness tothe accident.

In all cases of accidents causing personalinjury, you should note that a claim mustbe registered with the Injuries Board ortaken before the Court within 2 years ofthe date on which the accident occurred.

It is a requirement that a letter of claim beissued by a claimant to the person hefeels is responsible for the accident within2 months of the date upon which theaccident occurred. Such a letter of claimwill, normally, be drafted by a Solicitor.

In cases of personal injury a claimantmust provide verifiable details of theirinjuries and this is, normally, by way ofreport obtained from one’s doctor. Again, one’s Solicitor will assist in organising theissue of such a report.

In short, it is advisable that you contactyour Solicitor as soon as possible after anaccident. At O’Brien Ronayne, Solicitors,we have extensive experience in dealingwith all types of personal injuries, from thesmallest to catastrophic injury cases, gained over many years.

The 500C isn't really a true convert-ible, as it's only the centre section ofthe roof that folds back - think of itmore as a car with a big fabric sun-roof. It has the same retro looks andengine line-up as the hatch-back, and the drivingexperience is virtuallyidentical, so theappeal is stillstrong.
