What is Insulin??? Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows the

body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the

food for energy or to store glucose for future use.

Insulin helps keeps your blood sugar level from getting

too high(hyperglycemia) or too low (hypoglycemia).

Why Insulin Important….

Injection storage… Room temperature- 15- 25 °C

Store in cool & dark places

Unused vials/cartridges – refrigerated

Frozen insulin – discard

Insulin should be taken out of refrigerator n kept at room

temp.( 30 min before use)

Check date of manufacturing

Avoid extreme temperatures- direct sunlight, kitchen, car,

top of television etc

Correct Dose…is it really important? 40IU insulin – 40 IU syringe

40 IU – red capped, markings denote 1 unit

100 IU- orange capped, markings denote 2 unit each

High dose than requirement can cause hypoglycemia

Stepwise Injection Technique:

Wash hands properly.

If insulin is cloudy- roll

the bottle between hands

until uniformly cloudy.

Wipe the top of insulin bottle

with alcohol swab

Draw air into the syringe equal

to the dose of insulin to be

taken

Pierce the rubber stopper of

insulin vial at 90° angle &

push the air in it.

Hold the bottle upside down &

draw the dose of insulin in

syringe

Select injection site

Clean injection site( selected area)

Gently pinch up the area using thumb & index finger

Push the needle through skin, push the plunger slowly

Count till 10 sec before removing the needle.

Remove needle from skin. Count again for 3-5 sec & release the pinch up.

Where to inject insulin Right site: Subcutaneous layer

Not too close to outer skin(as it will cause redness, pain, lump/swelling)

Not too deep in muscles(may cause pain & causes quick absorption of insulin)
