3.0 MEET THE TEAM

SUE WYNNE

Instrumental Music Coordinator, Brass,

Piano and AMEB Theory Sue Wynne began playing piano at age nine. She was taught

classical piano through the Australian Music Examinations

Board and developed a passion for all genres.

Although Sue qualified as a nurse/midwife, she returned to

music as her primary career and has taught piano for 30

years.

Engaging, motivating and enabling students to love and play

music is always rewarding and a joy.

PENN FARMER

Band Master and Guitar

Penn Farmer started playing guitar at the age of twelve. At the

age of sixteen, while still in high school, he started to teach

students at a local music store. This experience got him hooked

on music. Not only could Penn be passionate about music but

he could also enthusiastically pass on his love of the guitar and

music to others.

Penn went on to study Jazz Performance at Virginia

Commonwealth University under the tutelage of Doug Richards,

Mike Ess, John D’earth, Skip Gailes and Bob Hallahan.

He also studied Jazz guitar with Gene Bertoncini and Jimmy Bruno. VCU

gave Penn the foundation to make music his sole career.

During his career, Penn has performed with countless artists. In part these artists

include; John D’earth, Used Carlotta, Kyle Davis, Rene Marie, Glenn Wilson, Mark

Preston (The Lettermen), Eddie Holman, Chris Gable (Australia), Davidia

(Australia). From 2005-2012 Penn was employed by Princess Cruises as a show

band guitarist backing hundreds of entertainers and performing multiple Las Vegas

styled production shows. Penn also showcased his solo guitar talents while working

for Princess.

Teaching has always been a big part of Penn’s career. Penn states, “I love to teach!

There is no greater reward than having a student realise his or her potential and

recognise their own achievements. I love to see the light bulb of discovery shine

bright over a student’s head!.” He believes that “teaching makes a whole musician.”

Since making Mildura his home, Penn has been teaching guitar lessons here at

Trinity, The Sound Trap and numerous other schools.

IWAN SOEBARDI

Guitar/Drums Iwan has a Bachelor of Economics from Australian National

University but music was his real love and so studied guitar with

Sydney guitarist Peter Toohey at the former Academy of Guitar in

Bondi and extension Jazz Studies at the Sydney Conservatorium

of Music for several years which led to his acceptance into the

renowned Berklee College of Music Boston U.S.A. However, sadly

due to lack of funding he deferred his application and ultimately

pursued a career in advertising in Singapore for many years until

moving to Mildura in 2008 to be closer to family, where he has

come full circle back to a music career he thoroughly loves.

ALISON MACGREGOR

Strings From the age of 8 Alison has been obsessed with string playing: Alison attended the

Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, played for 6 years with the Melbourne

Youth Orchestra, attended National Music Camps run by the Australian Youth Orchestra,

toured with Victorian College of the Arts Orchestra and Melbourne Chamber Strings,

gained a diploma in music performance, started but deferred from university, formed with

a string quartet, taught violin and was a ‘jobbing musician’ including casual work with the

Elizabethan Trust (now Orchestra Victoria).

Reading a book about global economics changed everything,

convincing Alison that the world needed more scientists, not

violinists, and returned to undergraduate study.

After graduating Alison moved to Mildura as a Research Scientist in

Agriculture Victoria. With a Master’s degree in Agricultural Science,

she focused on vineyard biological control, pesticide residues and

spray application. After 17 years in research, she moved into

consultancy, which gave Alison the freedom to take on some music

students. A working week now involves farm visits, data analysis,

crop loss assessments, reporting, spray application training, field

trials, court appearances as an expert witness and 33 string

students (at Trinity Lutheran College and private). When Alison

swaps lesson days it usually means an urgent consultancy job came

up, or its harvest, or work took her out of the district.

Alison loves community music! She formed Fling, a community youth strings group in 2008,

resurrected the Mildura District Orchestra in 2009, co-formed Mildura trio (2011-2015) and

Mallee String Quartet in 2017. She tutors strings at the annual Wimmera Bands Group

Music School, and has tutored at Melbourne Youth Music Summer School.

Why does Alison juggle teaching with other work? Because she feels very privileged to

see students develop as citizens through music, with skills valued in any career: self-

discipline, team-work, multi-tasking, communication, listening, memorising, initiative,

creativity, concurrent use of right and left brain, confidence performing in public,

performance etiquette… and more.

LOUISE JUDD

Piano/Woodwind Louise was born and raised in Mildura and studied piano, organ, theory and clarinet with local teachers attaining a licentiate diploma with honours. Performing at many local functions from a young age she developed a love of performing as well as the desire to encourage others both young and old to enjoy playing a musical instrument. Louise has been teaching instrumental music both privately and at a number of district schools since she was a teenager and never tires of seeing students develop a love of music through learning to play an instrument.

LAURA POULTON Vocal/Singing Originally from Mildura, Victoria, Laura Poulton (Page) began her

professional training at The Melbourne Conservatorium of Music,

studying classical singing. After a year, Laura commenced studying at

WAAPA (BA Music Theatre). Whilst at WAAPA, Laura most notably

played Lucille Frank in their final production, 'Parade'. Other

productions include; the Australian premiere of 'Loving Repeating'

(Middle-Aged Gertrude), 'RENT' (Roger’s Mother), '42nd Street'

(Swing), 'Jane Eyre' (Jenny), 'Oklahoma' (ensemble), 'Laramie Project'

(Sherry Johnson, Zackie Salmon), 'Tales from Ovid' (Juno) and the

workshop production of 'A girl named Vincent' with Carmel Dean.

In 2008, Laura was invited to participate in a two-week intensive vocal program

(both Classical and Music Theatre) in Germany, under the tuition of Neil Semer and

Roberta Cunningham. Prior to WAAPA, Laura completed many musical

examinations, including AMEB Voice Grade 8 (Honours) and AMEB theory Grade

5. Laura was also chosen to sing with Rob Guest as part of his Regional tours in

2004 and 2006; she was fortunate enough to be one of the six finalists in the first

‘Rob Guest Endowment’ award in 2009 at Her Majesty’s theatre.

Upon completion of her BA, Laura decided to come home to Mildura and share the

knowledge she had been so lucky to receive whilst away. The LKP Singers formed

in early 2010, with Laura teaching over 120 students in that first year. In 2011, Laura

completed her Diploma of Education, as well as travelling and singing in Europe.

Upon returning home, Laura became the District Vocal Coordinator for the local

State high schools and then moved into classroom teaching at St. Joseph’s

College, Mildura. Whilst at St. Joseph’s, Laura was the Vocal Coach/Assistant

Musical Director for 'Seussical' and the Producer of 'Annie' and 'The Wizard of Oz'.

Additionally, Laura has been a choir director since the tender age of 14; having

conducted choirs at seven local schools.

8.0 PERFORMANCE REQUIRMENTS

Costumes Students are expected to participate in our performances. It’s one of the main reasons we take up dancing

as a hobby. To develop coordination, discipline and to have fun learning the art of performance.

The end of year production or SHOWCASE is a crucial aspect to the learning process and needs to

be a priority in your diary!

Students are required to wear a costume. Costumes are selected and ordered by the teacher from

professional Dance Costume suppliers worldwide and are not easily replaced.

They must be stored carefully and not ruined/torn prior to the performance. The same costume will be used both for Eisteddfod and Showcase - so DON’T PLAY IN THEM AT HOME until years end please!!! Any repair or replacement will be at the expense of the student. From time to time - group costumes will be

collected and stored with your teacher as to keep them “special” for the performance. These will be returned

to you at the conclusion of the performance.

Acceptable Jewelry is a medical identification and plain sleepers or studs in earlobes only. These must be

removed or taped for dance classes.

Costume costs will be itemized on an instrumental invoice and are payable by the due date. Costume fee is

to be paid at the commencement of first semester. This is NON Refundable.

Non-payment of fees by the due date will result in lesson suspension until paid. All suspended lessons will

still be due for payment.

Make-Up All student/s in the annual performance are required to wear basic makeup and all make-up items can be

purchased from pharmacies/supermarkets or Dance supplies specialist Cloud 9th Boutique in Ninth Street,

Mildura. Male students are to check with teacher concerning their make-up. Below is a list of what is required

for the basic make-up: Matt Foundation (own choice), Black Mascara, red/orange lipstick and Blush color.

It is handy/hygienic to have your own makeup and hair kit that is used for each performance. These

are also available from LOCAL Cloud 9th Hair and Lisa is happy to assist. 158 Ninth Street, Mildura

(03) 50519715.

Makeup is not acceptable in class. Students with a skin condition that requires the application of certain face

cream are to request permission from the relevant Head of School.
