Biosensor: what is it?
A biosensor is a compact analytical device, incorporating a biological or biologically-derived sensing element either integrated within or intimately associated with a physicochemical transducer.
It is a multidisciplinary r&d problem: biology, biochemistry, electrochemistry, microfluidics, physical chemistry, electromagnetics, electronics, control system, system identification, and software engineering.
It is fun to work with!
It is important for human health-care, food quality control and environmental monitoring
It has a big market: 2012/US$8.0 billion - 2018/US$19.0 billion

Biosensor block diagram
The biocatalyst (a) is the biological sensing element, which interacts (converts/binds) specifically with the incoming substrate/analyte S (blood, serum, urine, etc) to form a chemical product, complex or bond P, by triggering a specific chemical reaction. This reaction is determined/detected by the physico-chemical transducer (b). The output from the transducer is amplified (c), processed (d) and displayed (e)

The biocatalyst must be highly specific for the purpose of the analyses, stable for sufficiently long time under normal storage conditions
The reaction should be as independent of such physical parameters as stirring, pH and temperature. This would allow analysis of samples with minimal pre-treatment.
Reproducibility and linear response over sufficiently large analytical dynamic range, without dilution or concentration. Low electrical noise, and without memory effects.
For invasive monitoring in clinical situations, the probe must be tiny and biocompatible, without toxic or antigenic effects, sterilisable, without tendency for fouling or proteolysis.
Cheap, small, portable and capable of being used by semi- or unskilled operators.

• heat output (or absorbed) by an exothermic reaction (calorimetric biosensors);
• distribution of charges (ions), causing an electrical potential to be produced (potentiometric biosensors);
• movement of electrons/charge carriers, produced in a redox reaction (amperometric biosensors);
• change of resistance by changes of mass/film thickness (resistance biosensor);
• mass variations of the film reactants or products (piezo-electric biosensors or quartz micro-balance & micro cantilever sensors);
• light output during the reaction or a light absorbance difference (color change) between the reactants and products (fluorescent optical biosensors and paper strip sensor);
• the change of refractive index and/or mass coverage (surface plasmon resonance sensor), or
Physico-chemical tranducers
