    BA 578-01W: Instructions for Final, Summer-1, 2013

    (Chapters 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14)

    Window period: 8 a.m. Sunday, June 30th till 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, July 2nd, 2013.

    Time limit is Seven Hours once the test is started

    (Single take Exam)

    General Guidelines

    At the outset I want you to realize that this is an open book test, but full

    preparation is absolutely necessary. If you are not prepared enough and need to

    turn the pages of the book or power point slides or my Instructions at every step,then it would not be possible for you to finish all questions in time. Also remember

    that the questions are based on the topics covered in the Text Book and my

    Instructions but are not directly from the book (as was also true in your four Home

    Assignments). That is why I am posting this guideline about 10 days ahead, so that

    you have adequate time to review the whole material (which includes quite a lot :

    more than 500 pages of the Text book, equal number of power point slides, and

    several sets of My Chapter Instructions).

    Also review the four Assignment solutions (you will receive the solution to thefourth assignment by the morning of Monday, July 1st.Therefore, no late

    submission for any reason will be accepted for the fourth assignment. As

    you have already seen, I give the solution to the Assignments with explanations

    and details wherever I feel needed. Moreover, I provide hints and explanations in

    my responses in the Virtual office Question Answer forum and in my prompt

    responses to all your emails everyday of the week. I also provide power point

    slides. But the most important resource for you to review and completely

    master is the set of my own Chapter Instructions which covers everythingrelevant for Assignments and the Test.

    Thus, you have enough resources available to prepare for the tests and

    assignments. Having so many resources available, sometimes also creates a time

    constraint problem in reviewing. Therefore, I will provide guidelines for the topics

    you have to focus on, in the sections below. First, some general but important

    reminders about logistics are in order: Keep at least one pen or pencil, a note

    pad and a working calculator (with new batteries) so that you may be able to

    do some calculations required for answering a question. Also keep the book

    handy because you may need the appendix tables in some questions (or evenbetter, make a print out). And dont forget to save your work every five to 10

    minutes during the test; because you may be timed out without realizing it or

    some technical problems might arise. Above all, keep your computer in optimal

    performing condition and have a backup plan for internet disruption at your home.

    My best advice is that you learn how to use excel or MegaStat quickly (Not

    essential for the test, but if you are smart and quick with these tools you may

    get some of the answers quicker than the tables in the book and calculator).

    However, for the test I am not asking you to use them. They are optional: you

    can use them for your own convenience in getting the answers quickly. Another

    advice is to start the test well before the last hours (that is well before 5 p.m. on

    July 2nd). This will give you some time to contact me or the help desk if some

    unexpected technical problem arises during the test. At the very last hour no one

    will be able to help. If you take the test at the very last houragainst my advice,

    then you are assuming all the risk/responsibilities on yourself for unforeseen

    incidents. In the Final, that is not prudent.

    Style and Format of the Test

    The test will consist of 15 True/False type (8 points each), 15 Multiple/Choices (12

    points each) and 10 Essay Type (20 points each) with a total of 500 points. The

    Chapters covered are 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, and 14. The topics to focus in these

    Chapters are listed below.

    Chapter 4

    1. The rules of Probability, Union and Intersection, Rules of Addition and

    Multiplication, Mutually Exclusive and Not Mutually exclusive events, and

    Complements,

    2. Rules for Independent and Dependent Events

    3. The Bayesian Rule

    4. Contingency Table based Probability calculations

    1. The Concept of Discrete and Continuous Random Variables and Probability

    You can use Excel/MegaStat (as many of you have done in the Assignments) orcalculate using calculator and formulas (as I have shown in the solutions and

    Instructions). But you need to show key results and interpret/ explain or write fewwords of explanation in essay type questions, as most of you have done. If you

    give one number or one word answer without any detail in essay type questions,you risk losing some (even if the answer is correct) or all points (if the answer is

    wrong). Show me some key intermediate steps and results leading to the Finalanswer. You can simply copy and paste from your computer work or type the key

    results and steps.

    This concludes my Instructions for the Final. My final word of advice is that start

    preparing for the Final from today and be prepared well in advance and take the

    test at least keeping 10 hours or more between start and the final hour of the exam.That way you will have some time left if something unexpected happens. Keep

    saving your work at about every 10 minutes. When you submit the test make sureit is properly submitted. It should tell you your score from the True/False and

    Multiple Choices after submission. In the Final hours of the Final I may not be ableto help you (or the help desk may not be able to help) if some technical problem

    occurs. During the Final they are also extremely busy helping large number ofstudents. You have about 10 days to prepare from today for the BIGGEST prize of

    this course with 500 points, which can significantly change your grade in eitherway. Get the last Assignment done quickly and focus on the Final as early as

    possible. You already know that I am practically accessible 24/7 through emailand questions in Virtual Office. But dont wait to ask questions when the window

    period for the Final starts. I may be too busy or my internet may be down orsomething like that might happen at the last moment. So get ready before June 30th.
