Instructional Materials Overview
The two hour training module, officially titled New Employee Orientation Training
Module, utilizes a blended approach consisting of a combination of in-person, RHI-trainer
guided lecture, open discussion between trainer and learner (RHI employee), and hands-on
utilization and application of the employee’s individual Google Apps online account. This
particular approach was chosen and deemed appropriate considering the significant amount of
baseline, or prerequisite, knowledge the learner (RHI employee) must develop immediately upon
hire before progressing to more advanced training. The in-person, RHI-trainer guided lecture will
allow the learner (RHI employee) to be formally introduced to RHI personnel, as well as provide
an opportunity for immediate relationship-building. This immediate, in-person interaction
between learner and RHI staff is valuable considering a significant amount of time the employee
will spend working remotely following the completion of the entire New Employee Orientation
Training. The open discussion will allow the learner to ask clarifying questions, as well as for the
trainer to initiate and integrate conversational dialogue aimed to create a safe learning
environment, as well as initiate a collaborative working relationship. The hands-on utilization
and application of Google Apps allows the learner to experience the online application first-
hand, accompanied by a trained individual that can assist, as needed. Hands-on activity is also
often considered to be more engaging, and if accompanied by repetition, may assist in learner
retention of knowledge. Lastly, allowing the learner access to his or her individual Google Apps
online account is intended to increase his or her perception of relevancy of the training content,
which ultimately can lead to increased learner retention and motivation among adult learners
(Morrison, Ross, Kalman, & Kemp, 2013). This is critical considering all new employees are 18
years old and above.
There are a total of 10 instructional materials that that will be created and provided to the
employee during the training. All instructional materials are specific to, and support the learning
of, the four goals of the training module. Table 1: Integration of Instructional Materials into the
New Employee Orientation Training Module illustrates where each of the instructional materials
will be integrated into the training module, as well as a brief description of the instructional
material. NOTE: Table 1 does not illustrate the integrated Check Your Knowledge tasks
following each topic.

Presentation Module
The Rural Health Initiative (RHI) utilizes Google Apps for Non-Profits (See Illustration
1: Google Apps for Non-Profit Icon below), and the Program Manager (Shaya Hintz) serves as
the Account Administrator. The Account Administrator will assign and provide the learner (RHI
employee) with an individual username and password on the day of training, which will provide

access to any of the RHI-enabled Google Apps following the completion of Topic 3 (Google
Apps), both parts A and B. Prior to the completion of Topic 3, learners will be provided printed
instructional materials and encouraged to keep in the provided Employee Orientation Binder for
future reference.

All instructional materials, excluding the cover and table of contents of Employee
Orientation Binder, will be accessible to the learner (RHI employee) via a New Employee
Orientation Google Site. The New Employee Orientation [NEO] Google Site will be a new
Google Site in addition to the pre-existing Employee Portal [EP] Google Site. Currently, the
NEO site access is restricted to only individuals provided with the following link:
https://sites.google.com/a/rhiwi.org/new-employee-orientation-neo/. Illustration 2 below is a
screenshot of the Rural Health Initiative’s Google Site list, as seen by RHI employees.
Illustration 3 is a screenshot of the New Employee Orientation’s homepage header. NOTE: The
theme and content will be revised during the design phase.

Assessment Materials
The following instruments were developed to assess learner attainment of the established
instructional objectives. In addition, Table 3 lists each of the training module’s instructional
objectives and states the correlation to the assessment instruments.
1. RHI Orientation Quiz. This online Survey Monkey quiz will be administered and
utilized as a pre-test and post-test. A link to the pre-test will be emailed to the learner
prior to the day of training for completion with instructions and strong encouragement to
attempt the quiz without referencing any resources. The post-test will serve as the Check
Your Knowledge #5, following training module Topic 1-3, as listed in Table 2. The post-
quiz must be completed within 24 hours, and the employee will have three attempts to
achieve 90% or higher. NOTE: The following is a revision from the previously submitted
Design Document (Module 1): If the employee is unsuccessful, he or she must review
content related to the questions he or she answered incorrectly on any of the three quiz
attempts with an RHI trainer prior to attempting to take the quiz again in efforts to
obtain a satisfactory score.
The content of the quiz is structured to test the learner’s knowledge through a
hybrid of objective and constructed responses, two common categories used to assess
attainment of instructional objectives of the cognitive domain of Bloom’s taxonomy
(Morrison et al., 2013), which includes objectives #1-#8 of this training module. The
objective response content includes multiple choice questions, considered to “the most
useful and versatile type of objective testing” (p. 281), appropriate for both low and high
level objectives with “content meaningful relative to the instructional objectives” (p.282).
In addition, the objective response content includes true/false statements, as well as
matching items to address to test the learner’s ability to differentiate between definitions
and terms.

2. Direct Observation. This method will be used to assess instructional objective #9,
associated with an interpersonal skill, and objective #12. The RHI trainer will be able to
determine first-hand if the learner (RHI employee) is providing verbal or nonverbal
gestures, or replies, throughout the training module to attain successful completion of #9.
Objective #12, which focuses on the learner’s ability to appropriately maneuver the
computer mouse, will also be assessed visually by the RHI trainer through observation
throughout Topic 3 (Google Apps) of the training module while the learner is interacting
with the computer workstation, including a computer mouse.
3. Direct Test. This method will be utilized to assess learner skills, primarily those
associated with instructional objectives #10-#12 of the training module, due to the focus
of these objectives on final outcomes (Morrison et al, 2013). For example, the final
outcome for instructional objective #10 is successful log-in into the learner’s individual
Google Apps online account, and the focus of objective #11 is successful access of
Google Calendar from Google Mail. Considering the acceptable proficiency level (as
determined by the performance standard component of each objective),
equipment/tools/materials/printed resources, and potential special matters (Morrison et
al., 2013, p. 296), below are the directions for instructional objectives #10-#11.

1. Sit down at an unlocked computer workstation in the assigned training lab.
2. Review the Google Apps Username and Password handout. Take note of our individualized username and password.
3. When you are ready, call over the RHI trainer. He or she will observe you during Steps 5-10.
4. Open Chrome web browser5. Type in www.google.com in the title bar to go to Google’s
website.6. Click the “Sign In” button7. Using the Google Apps Username and Password handout, type
in your username.8. Using the Google Apps Username and Password handout, type
in your password.9. Click “Sign In”10. If you log in successfully, you are finished. If you do not log in
successfully, repeat Steps 8-9 again. After two unsuccessful attempts, the RHI trainer will assist you in.

1. Watch the RHI trainer demonstrate how to navigate between Google Apps, paying special attention of how to access Google Calendar from Google Mail.

4. Go to Google Mail5. When you are ready, call over the RHI trainer. He or she will

In addition, a Learner Satisfaction survey will be used to gain the learner’s feedback and
insight regarding the content and delivery of the New Employee Orientation Training Module.
The survey content is categorized into four sections: RHI Program Knowledge, Technical Skills,
Training Content, and Delivery Method of Training. The first two sections require the learner to
answer the questions using two rating scales (one Likert scale, and one modified Likert scale).
The last two sections of the survey, pertaining to the content of the training and the delivery
method, use open-ended question format allow the user to formulate responses and convey
feelings using his or her own words (Morrison et al., 2013). Reference Appendix C: Learner
Satisfaction Survey for content. The blended format of the survey allows RHI to tabulate the
rating scale responses efficiently, as well as obtain valuable insight from the learner via open-
ended questions that may have otherwise been missed (2013) using strictly rating scales.
